SIPconnect Embraced By The SIP Forum

First off, I'm glad to be back -- (in case you didn't notice, I took a break from blogging this past month due to travel, vacation, family matters and work projects) -- and I'm feeling reinvigorated and ready to get back into the thick of things.

The practice of direct IP Peering between SIP-enabled IP PBXs and SIP-enabled VoIP Service Providers, or more commonly referred to as "SIP Trunking", is continuing to gain traction in the marketplace.

Of recent interest in this vein, and something that will surely give SIP trunking brand new respect, is the coming announcement that the SIP Forum has formally embraced the SIPconnect Interface Specification.

The SIPconnect Interface Specification -- now organized and maintained by the SIP Forum -- defines a methodology for enabling direct peering between a SIP-enabled Service Provider network and a SIP-enabled Enterprise Network. SIPconnect specifies a reference architecture, a minimal set of IETF and ITU-T standards that must be supported, provides precise guidance in the areas where the standards leave multiple implementation options, and specifies a minimal set of capabilities that should be supported by the Service Provider and Enterprise networks.

Slated for formal announcement at the upcoming VON show in Boston, the industry-wide launch of SIPconnect includes a conference session with the following particulars:

SIP Trunking Comes of Age and SIP Connect has Arrived

The Industry is looking to change the primary VoIP interface from an enterprise to a service provider to an all IP and SIP based Internet solution. Integrated Systems Digital Network [ISDN] PRI’s have been the interface of record for most Private Branch Exchanges [PBXs], but now the SIP Forum, in cooperation with major PBX vendors and service providers, has developed a standard interface can support direct SIP trunking. This is thanks to a new standards based profile coming from the SIP Forum using IETF based standards. This panel of PBX manufacturers and carriers share their interoperability efforts to date and their plans for commercial roll out today with examples of both cost savings as well as new service interoperability.
