VoIP URLs Fast and Furious

November 30, 2004 10:00 AM | 0 Comments
The number of domain name registrations mentioning VoIP hasnt stopped growing. I have been monitoring these for a while as they are a great indicator of new products and services that will be coming out in the future. Consider these the tea leaves of the industry. Some of these are just country specific applications such as IrelandVoip.com but where it gets interesting is when terms like SIP and ENUM are thrown is as well. I hope you find this useful. These were all registered yesterday or November 30, 2004. avoips.net

VoIP the FCC and Freedom of Speech

November 29, 2004 3:40 PM | 0 Comments
Here is a great article on VoIP the FCC and Freedom of Speech.Excerpt:
NOVEMBER 29, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - It must be tough being America's nanny, especially when there's so much real work to do. Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and his feckless colleagues are on a roll these days. They're chasing so-called indecency from the airwaves with a zeal we haven't seen in decades, causing broadcasters to turn what's already a Pablum medium into even worse junk. What does this have to do with the world of business and IT? Plenty -- the serious telecom issues on the FCC's plate need attention, and they're not getting enough of it. There's been at least a tiny bit of progress on one key issue: whether Internet-based telephony, or VoIP, should be regulated, and if so, by whom. The FCC recently said that it alone should have regulatory authority in this arena. That's a good idea. Many states have been eyeing VoIP in a variety of ways, especially as something they might tax. But if anything in today's communications world is an interstate system, it's the Internet. And VoIP is just one more bit of software using the Net. Now, one could make an argument that Internet calls to or from phones served by fixed-line carriers should come under the authority of the state agencies that regulate the regional telephone monopolies. That would create chaos, however, in an industry that's just beginning to be a serious player on the telecom scene. It would create chaos for customers, too. Federal preemption makes sense in this case. If only this nod to common sense was matched by other recent FCC moves. Susan Crawford, a cyberlaw and intellectual property specialist who teaches at Yeshiva University's Cardozo Law School in New York, recently spotted some remarkable language in an FCC legal brief.

Skype Opens API Beta

This is an announcement that Niklas Zennstrm mentioned at Internet Telephony in LA but this is an elaboration of the program. This could be considered a direct assault on the growth of SIP devices and products.
A good gauge of the growth rate of enterprise VoIP can be summed up with the following excerpt: It took us 4-and-a-half years to sell our first 2 million IP phones and only 14 months to climb from 2 million to 4 million phones sold to customers, said Barry OSullivan, vice president and general manager for Ciscos IP Communications Business Unit. If you break it out, that equates to a rate of 37,000 phones per month for the first 4.5 years while the more recent rate is 143,000 phones per month. Interestingly a similar trend is happening across medium and small enterprises as well. These growth rates are indicative of the entire enterprise market based on my conversations with vendors in the industry.

Nortel dumps bandwidth exchange suit

November 10, 2004 9:03 AM | 0 Comments
CNET had an article today on Nortel dropping its bandwidth exchange suit against Arbinet. Here is an excerpt.Nortel Networks said Tuesday it is dropping a copyright infringement lawsuit against Arbinet's Thexchange, which buys and sells bandwidth and telephone voice minutes. Arbinet agreed to pay Nortel an undisclosed amount as part of the settlement, according to Nortel.Arbinet is a leader in the VoIP peering space and is going to be going public soon while Nortel has received much press lately over earnings that were not stated correctly. This settlement seems like good news for both companies as they are in high-growth markets and this should allow them to concentrate more on building their businesses. On a related note, we are launching a  VoIP Peering Summit at the next Internet Telephony show in Miami. Arbinet was years ahead of their time. this market is very hot and there is a tremendous amount of interest in voice peering.
We received this release today. Here is my feeling on this type of campaign. I get concerned whenever telecom companies spend too much money on the general media like TV and mainstream magazines. The reason I am concerned is that these campaigns are usually at the expense of more focused technology publications and shows. I get lots of comments from attendees at our events telling me that companies that run VoIP ads during soccer and football games are wasting their money. What is your opinion?

VoIP Turns 2.0 - VoIP 2.0 is Here

Q) What do you call a political pollster after the 2004 presidential election?A) WaiterI watched the countdown to the election and listened to the pollsters who seemed to trip over each other to announce incorrect guesses as to who would win and by how much. Amazingly on election day itself I was convinced that Kerry would win. I was reminded of this issue when I took a look at TMCnets most popular news articles located in a box at the bottom of most pages on our site and found Upoc Poll of Mobile Phone Users Shows Kerry as Favorite for Tuesday's Presidential Election, a release from Upoc Networks, a mobile phone community. In the release they tout how they have a mobile community and represent the group of people that arent generally polled and subsequently their accuracy should be greater. They had Kerry up 30% and in the end and were probably a more accurate barometer for how young tech-savvy voters voted. What they missed is the rest of the country and the fact that their respondents didnt vote.It goes to show you that technology is a great enabler and can take down barriers but you cant rely on technology alone to resolve issues; you need to take a look at underlying processes as well. This is a good lesson for the communications market as we are on the eve of VoIP turning 2.0. A proliferation of technologies and business factors are culminating in a new VoIP environment.VoIP 2.0 represents the changing processes of VoIP, a look beyond technology for technologys sake and a look at what we will do with it and how it will transform the way the world communicates.Presidents love to talk about mandates and I have noticed that VoIP too has a mandate from the people. They want it. Just as a president with a mandate feels more confident and assured and gets more accomplished, I expect the upcoming year to be the year where we see VoIP vendors and technologies evolve rapidly to transform our communications landscape for the better. I call it VoIP 2.0.

In the last few days TMC has made some amazing announcements regarding our publications. The first bit of news is that our print publications are going digital, meaning they will be available via PDF. Instead of having to wait 2 weeks for the printer to print the magazine and another 2+ weeks for delivery, you will receive your magazine via an e-mail link that will allow you to download a PDF that includes hyperlinks allowing you to get more out of the magazine than print could ever provide. There is nothing like the flexibility of reading a PDF publication with good hyperlinks in it allowing you to go to definitions, stock quotes and other related sites with the click of your mouse. We are working to make our PDF magazines far better than print.

These changes apply to both Internet Telephony and Customer Interaction Solutions magazines. Please note that domestic US subscribers will still be able to get the print magazine if they like and even print and digital if they desire. International subscribers will only be allowed to receive magazines digitally and in all cases they are free. There will be no paid printed magazine option. I should note that International print subscribers used to have to wait months to see domestically printed magazines. This change should be welcome for the entire TMC community.

While we were at it, we have also launched a slew of digital only magazines in 2005. Surprisingly, the new circulation page for these publications has been active for only a few days and yet we already have hundreds of domestic and international subscribers to our new digital magazines.

Here are the new titles:

SIP Magazine
: The Session Initiation Protocol Authority. This is the publication you need to stay on top of the latest in SIP products, services and programming tools. SIP has become an essential protocol in the world of presence, VoIP and contact centers. This publication will detail the concepts and products you need to understand in the world of SIP.

IMS Magazine: The Authority on IP Multimedia Subsystem

Speech-World: The Speech Technologies Authority. This publication will teach you everything you need to know about speech technologies from how to develop applications, implement them and test them. Most importantly we will show you how to select the right product for your organization and we promise to provide a comprehensive editorial vehicle that will help you in your job

WiFi Telephony Magazine: The Magazine of VoWLAN. This is the most exciting area of VoIP, the unwired variety. We are very excited to detail how VoIP will allow us even more flexible communications now that it is un-tethered.

VoIP Developer: The Guide to IP Telephony Hardware and Software Development. There is no question that VoIP provides the greatest area of growth for technology developers and there are so many facets to this market from host media processing (HMP) to SIP stacks to codec use to jitter buffers. Ahh developers, the ultimate nerds. For those of you that know me, you know I was a developer way back in my youth. I miss it. This magazine will be an essential tool for all telecom developers and will help me relive a part of my past.

WiMAX Magazine: The Magazine of Broadband Wireless. WiMAX or as they call it in Europe, HIPERMAN, is the next holy grail for broadband providers. If it is successful it will drastically change the competitive landscape and allow opportunity for severe disruption of business models and entrenched carriers. If it lives up to 10% of the hype it will change the way we access the web, VoIP and how the world communicates. We will bring you the developments as they occur in this exciting new space.

We haven’t decided the frequency of the digital magazines yet and are waiting for the subscriber databases to grow to the many thousands before we officially launch them. In the mean time we are staffing up to present you with the most timely and crucial vehicles you have to keep up to date on the various new technologies we will be covering.
