Over 6,000 at ITEXPO Miami

March 4, 2005

If you want to see the massive crowds at ITEXPO – the talk of the industry, please check out this video. Yes the video quality stinks but its optimized to play quickly. We may improve the quality next week. We had over 6,000 people at the event making this the largest Internet Telephony Conference & Expo TMC has ever produced. The density of attendees to exhibitors is something I haven’t seen at any technology show, ever. This sentiment was echoed by exhibitors. I guess the 12th show is a charm!

This industry growth isn’t lost on other events. Every event it seems is now a VoIP show or has some VoIP angle. I get new show brochures on my desk frequently and I can’t believe how mainstream voice over IP is today.

VoIP mobility Is a hot theme these days and you can see how companies are coming together to make it happen. I am hearing about this trend from Nortel, Avaya and others. It is also the theme of the March Issue of Internet Telephony Magazine which is in the mail.

Nortel and SIPquest bring SIP-based multimedia services to wireless devices

Phase-one to add Presence, Instant Messaging, and network-based directory and call logs.

SAN JOSE, CA. – March 7, 2005. Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] and SIPquest, a leading developer of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based IP Telephony software applications and technology, are working together to enable service providers to deliver advanced SIP-based multimedia services to residential and corporate customers over wireless handheld devices.

The companies will initially focus on delivering advanced capabilities such as Presence and IM for services delivered to handhelds such as RIM’s Blackberry, Sony-Ericcson P900 and other smartphones. Using Nortel’s Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5200 and SIPquest’s Wireless Collaboration Client -- a softphone residing on the handheld devices -- service providers will be able to deliver value-added services and productivity-enhancing tools to wireless users.

SIPquest and Nortel are demonstrating these capabilities at Spring VON in San Jose this week (Nortel booth #809, SIPquest booth #527).

This relationship builds on the strength of both companies. SIPquest is known as a pioneer in SIP-based technologies for corporate users. The company has already developed software dubbed ‘disruptive’ by analysts in the area of WiFi networks. Nortel is a global leader in enabling service providers to deliver a rich suite of multimedia and collaboration services that can be seamlessly integrated with existing telephone services. Moreover, both companies believe in open solutions based on industry standards.

“Service Providers will be able to take advantage of network convergence and deliver, under their own brand, new and innovative multimedia services to their customers”, said Alain Mouttham, SIPquest CEO. “This is an initial step in enhancing the user experience. As the market evolves, we anticipate bringing cellular and WiFi client solutions together to provide dual-mode functionality and a seamless end-user experience.”

“Both companies share a vision of transforming networks, enhancing the human experience, igniting global commerce and improving security,” said Jim Dondero, vice president of Carrier Packet Networks marketing, Nortel. “Today’s announcement is an important first step in delivering profoundly powerful communications to end-users, providing a level of control and personalization from a handheld device not yet experienced. We will work with SIPquest to evolve these capabilities even further.”

Nortel’s MCS 5200 seamlessly integrates voice with video, collaboration, and presence services and enables service providers to deliver hosted multimedia communications services to create new revenue-generating opportunities. These SIP-based next generation, multimedia services enhance the ability for both enterprise and consumer end-users to communicate and collaborate more effectively and efficiently.

SIPquest’s Wireless Collaboration Client is an intuitive application that allows the end-user to quickly access capabilities such as Presence, Instant Messaging and advanced call routing capabilities. It can be rebranded and customized to allow service providers to deliver services valued by the end-user.

FCC Fights for VoIP

March 4, 2005

I have been a critic of the FCC because of my concern about broadband competition. One important reason for this concern was that without broadband competition, service providers are in a position to “tinker” with VoIP packets. They can stop them, slow them, disrupt them, etc. At the last ITEXPO in Miami, many other people in the industry shared the same concern.

Beyond the VoIP issue, broadband competition is necessary for a variety of reasons. But rather than going down the broadband path, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Chairman Powell for his swift actions yesterday.

Madison River Communications LLC blocked ports needed to transmit VoIP and the FCC reacted like a cheetah and slapped a $15,000 fine on the company. This is huge news as my crystal ball for VoIP growth shows a continuing upward trend but the cloud of service providers slowing or stopping VoIP traffic was a major concern of mine that I have written about often.

What the FCC has just done proves that it cares about this problem and more importantly it will take action to ensure VoIP packets can flow as freely as any other packet.

So are we out of the woods yet? Perhaps but I am still concerned about broadband providers slowing packets or dropping every fifth packet, etc. As we learned when ILECS had to compete with CLECs, the ILECS can do some very creative things that are in the gray areas of the law to hurt the CLECs. The same can be done to VoIP providers and I suspect these gray areas will be explored soon. Proving it will become a challenge for our industry.

Still, this is a massive step in the right direction and it shows that the FCC is really concerned about VoIP being available to our entire population. Thanks Mr. Powell.
