Quoted Again in the Boston Globe
Wow! I thought I was quoted once in the Boston Globe and I just finished blogging about the story entitled Plugging Into The Future but it seems I made another article as well. This one talks about hybrid cellular WiFi phones and the coming marriage of the two. My quote explains how terrible today's home cordless phones are. I truly believe replacing the home cordless phone is a great opportunity for today's VoIP providers! WiFi telephony is a shining star in our industry's universe. Here is the story: Hybrid phones hold promise of cellular, VoIP.
Rich Tehrani Quoted in Boston Globe
I was just recently quoted in a Boston Globe article: Plugging Into The Future by Peter Howe. I think Peter did a great job on the story and I am not just saying that because I was quoted :-). I am on page 2.
Sennheiser PXC 300
I just purchased -- yes purchased a Sennheiser PXC-300. You see I was sent the PXC 250 for a review and I loved it. Sennheiser asked for it back and as a result I literally suffered on my next plane trip. I can't explain how much more relaxed and alert I was after using Sennheiser's noise-canceling headphones on the plane. Usually I get things like headsets for free. My office is actually littered with them as I review them when time permits. I didn't even ask for a review unit of the PXC-300... I was so quickly addicted to noise-canceling that I ordered a pair online as soon as I learned they were available.
The PXC300 is better than the PXC-250 from a noise canceling perspective. The new model has NoiseGard Advance which is the marketing term for something that sounds great. I love the headset because it is just big enough to cover the ears yet small enough to not seriously slow you down or fill your laptop case. Covering the ears is important as it is part of the noise-reducing process.
If there is a drawback it's that the headset doesn't have the robust bass punch I would like. When you turn the noise-canceling on however, the music is severely colored which I happen to like. The bass does get a bit more punch in this mode. It's as if you turned a preset equalizer to the dance music mode.
I have used the headset to listen to dance, pop, classical, and Latin music. It has reproduced the music with aplomb in every case and IMO is a good value at around $200 which is what I paid. At $150 or less it's an amazing deal.
The Killer Service
In case you missed the release, here are the official numbers from ITEXPO in
What this validates for me personally is the theme of VoIP 2.0 and that more importantly the industry is now going to the next level of applications and technologies. This will e a critical year for VoIP IMO as the spotlight has never shone so bright on our young but thriving industry. Occasional network outages or 911 problems have the potential to shake us up a bit but in the end these minor problems will give way to a world where VoIP replaces the PSTN.
How we sell applications and services is what will be fun in the coming years. We need to package apps around VoIP and stop focusing so much on bargain-basement pricing. As much as I have chastised Verizon Wireless in this blog and in my magazine columns, I love them dearly as a company because they give me coverage no other service provider can match. Service providers need to differentiate themselves like Verizon Wireless did. You must find a niche. You can't all be the cut-rate choice; you need to be better at something.
This is a crucial marketing concept. Stop focusing on dollars and focus on the sense. We need THE Killer Service just as software and platform companies look to a killer application!

NORWALK, Conn. --(Business Wire)-- March 7, 2005 -- Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC(R)) today announced that total attendance at its INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference and EXPO Miami 2005, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and James L. Knight Convention Center in Downtown Miami last month, exceeded last year's total by more than 72% -- reaching 6,228 total attendees over the four days of the event. "The theme of this year's conference, `VoIP 2.0,' couldn't have been more on the mark. It's clear that VoIP has left the test bed and solutions as solutions are being deployed in large numbers, even more enterprises, government agencies and service providers are preparing their VoIP strategies," explained
Tehrani continued, "This year's overwhelming turnout is a clear indicator that IP telephony is now viewed as an effective, reliable vehicle for global communication. Clearly, VoIP is here to stay and representatives from over 70 countries decided that INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO was the best place to come learn about it."
TMC also reported a 50% increase in the number of exhibitors from 2004, and this event represents the third INTERNET TELEPHONY conference in succession where all available exhibit space sold out.
