FMC or Fixed Mobile Convergence
As much as I would like to go, I won't make CTIA this year. I have been deluged with product pitches since I am on the press list and most of the pitches seemed boring or just not a fit for my various beats. This pitch seemed exciting so I decided to pass it along. I hope I have some time to touch base with the company because this seems really interesting.
I will be honest, I never heard of fixed-mobile convergence but am happy there is a new telecom acronym for my IP Telephony Dictionary ;-) BTW if you purchased the new edition released at ITEXPO Miami expecting this term to be in there, no refunds. Sorry :-)
--------------------
Outsmart Ltd. a provider of complete fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) and intelligent networks based solutions, would like to meet with you at CTIA in
Analysts predict that fixed mobile convergence (FMC) will be the strongest trend in telecommunications in the next three years.
Outsmart (www.outsmarttelecom.com) brings the benefits of mobile telephony into the fixed environment, irrespective of location, access technology and terminals and provides a complete convergence of services, networks and devices to both fixed and mobile users today. It allows operators to enter and dominate the VoIP market.
SmartFMC meets the business and technological convergence needs of the communications community. Integrating SIP-based telephony (VoIP) into the mobile core network, SmartFMC allows fixed phones to appear to the mobile network as if they were mobile phones. The fixed-phone therefore provides all the services and benefits of mobile telephony such as virtual private network, prepaid, voicemail, ring-back tones, SMS, multimedia messaging services and address book. Likewise, SmartFMC enables mobile operators to extend the core network to offer fixed telephony services based on VoIP. Users may access through ADSL, cable modem, WiFi, WLAN, or other broadband IP connections across a variety of VoIP terminals. These include IP-phones, soft phones running on PC or PDA, POTS with ATA or Dual Mode (GSM+WLAN) mobile phones.
Tekelec and Siemens optiPoint
Tekelec today announced plans to incorporate the Siemens optiPoint family of SIP phones into its expanding portfolio of next-generation telephony offerings. With the combined Tekelec 6000 VoIP Applications Server and the Siemens optiPoint family of SIP phones, TeleSpectrum will benefit from a comprehensive suite of voice over IP (VoIP) telephony features, applications and phones. TeleSpectrum is a part of Telecommunicatie B.V.and is a reseller of telecom and data solutions based in the
Tekelec supports SIP, media gateway control protocol (MGCP), signaling connection control part (SCCP) and MiNet. With this announcement, they now supports 40 different integrated access devices and IP phone models.
Blogging Panel
I had a chance to see the blogging panel at VON. I briefly heard Andy Abramson moderating -- he seemed to do a great job and was dressed as a referee. Talk about playing the part. Very smart idea. I heard Om Malik speak briefly and Jeff Pulver speak for about five minutes. Jeff was pretty eloquent and funny. There was a debate about the legality of VoIP in other countries and whether VoIP should really be free. Jeff argued that VoIP is like an alternative road to a toll road. In other words it should be free. People should have the choice. I agree with his argument. I only wish I had more time to listen in as the session seemed good. I was hoping also to hear TMC's
The market is absolutely crazy right now. There is so much buying going on. I am noticing that many of my contacts in the industry who have been in the business for years aren't capitalizing on the growth potential. Many of the companies that have made it through the downturn are still in survival mode meaning they aren't promoting what they do effectively. Actually they aren't doing much of anything really. Just hanging on it seems.
At the same time hundreds of new VoIP companies are springing up around the world. This new breed of company is more competitive and they seem hungrier than the "old guard." These older companies think the world is speaking Latin while they are really speaking English (or is IP a better analogy? Italian?) Either way, it's a new competitive landscape and there is true market growth taking place.
To all I say the following:
Carpe Diem or Seize the Day!

Some CeBit VoIP news. If you can believe it, I have never been to CeBit. I hope to go one day.

Verisign Financial VoIP
I am meeting with VeriSign today at VON and am looking forward to discussing this release. It is amazing to me how vertical companies are getting. This is a solution that could be used in a number of markets but financial was the one VeriSign chose to go after. This is a smart move and it signals to me that the market is maturing enough for companies to start staking claims in subsets of it.
