Paradigm Changing

I use this term a lot. Perhaps too much. I saw it today in an article on TMCnet referring to Google as a paradigm changing company. Amazingly many of the things Google is doing now, investors agreed would happen in 1996.

We all expected Yahoo! To be that paradigm changing company and it never happened. Well it did but not to the extent Google is taking it to. It boggles my mind that Yahoo! should have been what Google is.

As you may recall, Yahoo! Went from search company to a portal company virtually overnight.

What I wonder is who steered us and Yahoo! in the wrong direction? In 1995 search was hot and it was where everything was going. A few questions plague me:

Why did Yahoo! Virtually abandon its business model and even outsource search to Google

Why couldn’t Yahoo focus on being a portal and an excellent search engine at once? -- They had hordes of cash. They could have launched a rocket into space with all their resources. They couldn’t figure out how to keep their search working effectively?

Finally, what happened to AltaVista? I used to love this search engine. Shouldn’t AltaVista have become Google?

ITEXPO Gets More Press

There was a great article in the South Florida Business Journal (Alexa 1,170) about the keynotes at Internet Telephony Conference & Expo. In particular there was a mention of Tom Ridge and his participation in the conference. A nice mention of Ron Insana from CNBC and our other esteemed keynotes was in the article as well:

In addition to Ridge, the conference is to include talks from CNBC anchor Ron Insana and executives from IBM, Cisco, AT&T, Aculab, General Motors, Digium, Avaya, Covad, Quintum, Nortel, Level 3, NetCentrex, Interactive Intelligence, Time Warner Telecom, AudioCodes, Expedient Systems and Pingtel.

It is tough to believe the show is a mere 53 days away!!

I can’t wait.

Sangoma

I have been meaning to write about Sangoma for months. A while back I spent some time speaking with company execs and seeing what they are up to. The company has a great reputation for selling high-quality boards for Asterisk PBXs. Here is the company’s latest release:

“For a recent client, we needed to deploy an entire broadband telephone solution,” says Stephen Wingfield, CEO of Bicom Systems, a London, UK- based VoIP solutions provider. “Sangoma's newly released A104d Series gateway of cards were a key component to our SWITCHware solution and worked “right out of the gate” with little configuration.”

“We had confidence that our A104d had the technical capability to provide Bicom System's with immediate ease of installation, quality of service and reliability,” adds Sangoma Technologies President and CEO David Mandelstam. “We are pleased now to be placed on their preferred Hardware Providers List for future projects needing our horsepower.”

The A104d includes a miniature voice enhancement sandwich board. The voice enhancement capabilities added to Sangoma's standard AFT-based A104 card include: G.168-2002 echo cancellation with 1024 tap/128ms tail per channel on all channel densities, DMF encoding/decoding and tone recognition, voice quality enhancement and adaptive noise reduction.

China Inoculates 14.2 Domesticated Fowl

According to Chinese news reports, and interviews with people involved in the inoculation effort in several different parts of the country, the vaccination drive is proceeding relatively well in places that have large poultry industries. In the countryside, however, among China's peasantry, vaccine is reportedly in short supply, despite the huge production.

Typically, the extension workers who are carrying out the vaccination campaign have little epidemiological training and, like the ones in this village, take virtually no precautions, even to protect themselves against exposure to the disease.
One of the extension workers, who wore no gloves, face mask or any other protection, climbed inside a coop containing a dozen or so chickens and handed the birds out one by one to two of his co-workers. One of them held the birds while the other swabbed them and applied the needle.

Zhang Rongting, an elderly woman who owned the house, then placed the birds in straw crates, covering them with washbowls to calm them and isolate them until the job was complete. Asked what kind of shots her chickens were getting, she said, "You guys know, we don't."

Toward the end of the afternoon, when the presence of foreigners in the village drew the attention of local officials, the vaccination team donned white smocks for the first time, but continued to handle the birds bare-handed and without masks. After inoculating the geese in one dusty courtyard, the team discarded its used needle on the ground and walked away.
