ITEXPO Still on Fire

September 7, 2006
I have never seen the quality of conferee and sheer number of registrants for any show in TMC’s history. This Internet Telephony Conference & Expo will be the best-attended IP communications event in the world and as usual expect to meet people who buy products.

We can’t be more excited about this trend. Last year over 110 countries were represented at the two ITEXPO shows. We are really excited to be bringing the world to these massive IP communications events. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Microsoft Patents

September 7, 2006
eWeek does a great job on this article about Microsoft applying for a verb conjugating patent. Not everyone is thrilled with the patent by the way – some cite that the patent system is out of control – conjugating patents should not be patentable. Have a read for yourself. All I know is that if a computer can help make my blog writing go more smoother (whoops – smoothly) I am all for it.

Pretexting

September 7, 2006
I wrote about the HP and the spying scandal yesterday. Now it seems the investigators HP hired illegally got a hold of the reporter’s phone records by pretexting or pretending they are someone else. This is sometimes illegal according to this article – and I am trying to understand when this is legal – seems like a no brainer that this is against the law.

Telecom Timeline

September 7, 2006
Ok quick – when did Ericsson buy Marconi? Nokia and Siemens merge telecom units? If you are trying to keep track of what is happening in the world of communications mergers and acquisitions from Lucent to Alcatel to Motorola and others -- look no further. This graphical page gives you an overview of some of the bigger communications merger and acquisition events in the market.

VoiPod is Coming

September 7, 2006
Tom tells us that the Apple VoIPod may be on its way. OK this may be a VoIP device but it will have to be eventually. I first wrote about the VoIPod back in December 2004– Now I am waiting for the prediction to come true.

If you look at what Sirius is doing with WiFi support in the Stiletto. Apple has to contend with the Sirius threat. Since telephony will likely be built into future Apple devices, WiFi telephony makes great sense and thus the VoIPod moniker.

TMC Google Toolbar Button

September 7, 2006
I have some very exciting news. If you have the latest edition of the Google Toolbar, you can now have a button for TMCnet that gives you access to the latest TMCnet news and analysis. This is really exciting. I have been using this toolbar button for a few weeks and it allows immediate access to TMCnet from the toolbar and in addition I get a dropdown box with all the news.

The toolbar is in Beta right now and a number of us here at TMC love how it works. You will need the latest version of Google Toolbar – Version 4.0 to use this feature. Enjoy.

Here is the button for the toolbar. We would love to get your feedback once you give it a try.

Taking Sirius Aim at iPod

September 7, 2006
Sure this article explains how XM might lose out to the Sirius Stiletto but the iPod is the bigger loser here. I listen to music exclusively on my phone now and wish I could listen to Satellite radio in my house. I can’t because the satellite signal won’t reach my house through all the trees. This device could allow me to store music via WiFi and listen to it at my convenience. Up to 100 hours can be stored. This could be the perfect music player but to really be perfect it needs a slot for additional storage.

Pocket-Sized Electric Car

September 7, 2006
For a mere $108,000 you too can have a state of the art electric car. It goes 120 M.P.H though making it fairly sporty. Also it has a zero to 60 time of 4.0 seconds which beats all but a handful of exotics. Looking at the car reminds one of a mini-me sized double-decker bus out of a Harry Potter movie and makes you wonder if Consumer Reports will have a ball talking about how easily it rolls over. Hammacher Schlemmer sells the car and persuasively argues that with 1,100 pounds of batteries at the bottom of the car the center of gravity is equivalent to many sports cars.

Does it have airbags, GPS, a radio, A/C? I have no clue but I would love a test drive.

Alcatel and Lucent Approve Merger

September 7, 2006
The Alcatel and Lucent merger was just approved despite rumors to the contrary. The price -- 10.8 billion dollars.

"As we have said from the start, the primary driver of this combination is to create long-term value for shareowners, customers, and employees," said Lucent Technologies Chairman and CEO Patricia Russo. "Today we received approval for the merger from Lucent's shareowners, and as a result, we are another step closer to creating the first truly global communications solutions provider with the broadest wireless, wireline and services portfolio in the industry."

Alcatel and Lucent expect to complete their merger transaction by the end of calendar year 2006, within the six- to 12-month timeframe originally announced on April 2. The companies have already cleared several key regulatory and antitrust milestones, including antitrust clearance in the United States and the European Union. In addition, the companies have submitted a formal notice to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), seeking U.S. governmental approval of their pending merger.

VoIP Killer App

September 7, 2006
The only VoIP Killer App was Vonage going public.

This is probably the funniest thing I have heard as of late. I can't take the credit for the quote -- it comes from Bill Mich, Jr. Chairman and CEO of Aperio CI.

Dialogic Repairs

September 7, 2006
I just got this e-mail and since I wasn't aware of companies that make Dialogic repairs, I figured others aren't aware either. So I decided to pass along this e-mail. I hope this information helps you. Good Luck.

----

Just read your article on Dialogic and Eicon. Did not know about the sale from Intel. My company, C.A.T.E., Inc, has been repairing dialogic cards for various distributors after the cards were rejected by Intel as non-repairable. We have seen over 400 cards and are running at about a 70% success rate. This has been a bit difficult to accomplish, since we can not obtain the board schematics. So the more we see the better we get. If you know of anyone that could use our services, please feel free to refer. And I'll keep reading your articles.

Thanks

Nortel’s Future

September 7, 2006
With the rumblings in the market and out Alcatel and Lucent possibly calling things off, it might be a good time to look to Canada and see how Nortel is doing and what they plan for their future. I just came across this great article on the future of Nortel. The company believes Next-Generation Mobility, Enterprise Transformation and Services & Solutions will be the heart of the new Nortel.

Here is my take on the news.

Mobility
A super-hot area – productivity will skyrocket as mobility gets better. There is lots of money to be made in this space and it will become more competitive as smartphone makers including Blackberry, wireless carriers and Microsoft (who could be in the smartphone category but are so large they deserve their own) all jockey for leadership position. Nortel has a great relationship with Microsoft which could be important for them. In the past, Microsoft has had a reputation for draining its partners and taking over markets for themselves. But I suspect the newer Microsoft is kinder and gentler and this partnership could really help Nortel out a great deal.

Enterprise Transformation
This is a buzzword that may mean a different thing depending on who you are but if you have read my articles on Just in Time Communications (assuming this is what transformation means) – this is exactly what the company should be focusing on. How to make companies more productive and efficient.

Services & Solutions
This is a profit generator par excellence. Look at how IBM has transformed itself into a new company revolving around Linux and software and services. Nortel could do the same. From Mike Zafirovski’s viewpoint it is time to take some of the money those consultants have been making from Nortel customers for all these years.

My take is Nortel has good direction and if Next generation mobility encompasses IMS and WiMAX and other crucial service provider technologies, then the company is on the right track.

In addition according to Reuters Canada, Nortel is looking for acquisitions. Some likely areas are in my opinion are WiMAX, Cable technology and IP communications companies focusing on the enterprise and service provider space.

The company still faces fierce competition but sometimes shaking up your team with a sale of an asset that is underperforming can wake up the organization and get the whole company to work harder and more efficiently. I would guess this strategy will payoff as long as the company executes and Zafirovski continues to exude strong leadership. So far so good.

Google Open Source

September 7, 2006
Sure open source is great and all but open sauce has all the benefits of open source with none of the calories. ;)

Hats off to Google – they have done it again.
