HP like OJ

September 16, 2006
Whenever I read articles about the recent HP fiasco I think back to how I felt when I was reading about the OJ case. It seems that everyone is leveraging the case for maximal publicity. They are milking it. I get nauseous when I see things like this happening. In fact I hate to read articles about matters such as this but am drawn to them just the same. It is the morbid curiosity that humans possess and the root cause of rubbernecking.

Having said all that you just don’t want to miss this Newsweek article on the OJ – I mean HP case. :)

Pretexting and Washington

September 16, 2006
HP executives will be testifying in Washington over the pretexting debacle. Now there is more recent news: The House Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters Friday requesting that HP Chairwoman Patricia Dunn and General Counsel Ann Baskins appear at a Sept. 28 subcommittee hearing.

But pretexting has been around for ages. Why now? Why the investigation? It seems fairly obvious what happened. Dunn even stepped down from HP because she said she was responsible for the incident.

I just hope this isnt a waste of tax dollars. Instead of focusing on Dunn and HP in my view it makes more sense to make pretexting a much greater crime. It also makes sense to make companies responsible for leaking customer information. If the pressure is on the corporation to protect data more carefully, I suspect pretexting will become much more difficult to pull off.
