China and Google

June 4, 2007
Most articles about China and Google focus on how the search company is censoring its content for the benefit of the Chinese government. This article however has nothing to do with this situation. Instead I will be contrasting the needs of government vs. the needs of the individual. And briefly at that.

You see China has decided that no new Internet cafes are to be licensed in the country. The entire internet café business is under scrutiny as China is concerned these cafes are giving children access to sexually oriented, gambling sites and violent games.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is news about Google Earth being used by recent terror suspects as part of their plan to blow up New York’s JFK Airport.

The contrast is that of closed access to the internet versus open access. In the latter case you have the potential for people to use freely available information to break the law, commit acts of terror, steal identities, etc.

Mind you, I am not trying to make a political statement here but rather contrast these news items which are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Netgear

June 4, 2007
Recently I sat down with Vivek Pathela the VP of Marketing at Netgear and he shared some of the recent happenings at the company. For example Netgear recently rolled out a new NAS solution which is based on technology from a company they recently acquired called Infrant.

NAS for the SMB with built-in RAID is somewhat interesting to me but what is really worth coverage is the approach the company takes to their NAS solution. They have focused on keeping NAS simple to operate.

Netgear is known for having products that work well in the field and they are embracing SMB telephony with the hope of bringing their easy to use mindset to the world of telecom. The company has partnered with Avaya to resell the New Jersey-based telecom leader’s one-x Quick Edition line of solutions.

Why is the edition quick you ask? That is a very good question. Now if I were thinking, I might have even asked this question in the interview. In my opinion “quick” refers to the ability of the solution to be set up very quickly.

This edition of the phone by the way is the p2p-based solution Avaya purchased from Nimcat Networks. As you may recall, I have discussed how the computer channel would be embracing p2p-based solutions in the future. The time has come. Avaya was smart enough to pick up Nimcat before they got purchased by someone else. The telecom company is now benefiting from the computer and networking industry’s interest in VoIP.

Getting back to the solution, there are three configurations to choose from:

Avaya provides telecom support and training in addition to the phones. This training is aimed at data VARs.

Really what we are seeing here is Avaya’s answer to the Linksys One solution where a simple package can be rolled out easily to data VARs worldwide.

Vivek wastes no time in pointing out this solution allows you to use SIP trunking and subsequently does not lock you into a single provider like the Linksys One solution.

I asked about what happens when a company grows to need 21 stations and the answer was Netgear is focusing on perfecting this solution for now and will eventually rollout systems with larger capacities.

Other areas the company is working on is a common distribution system allowing VARs to order Netgear and Avaya products simultaneously from a single resource.

So what’s my take? This is a great move for Avaya because it allows the company to encroach on the turf of Linksys. This is also great for data VARs because they are able to roll out telephony without having the intricate knowledge of telecom.

This solution is either good or bad for interconnects. An interconnect who reads this article and is exploring providing IP solutions such as these is in good shape. The rest of the market that hasn’t kept up will be soon wiped away by interconnects who get it and data VARs looking for new sources of revenue.

As has been the case in telecom for the last decade or so… Technology is changing how resellers sell and what customers want. Resellers need to get ahead of this curve or get steamrolled.

Be sure to follow the Avaya News page on TMCnet to track the potential acquisition of the company which is reported to be happening soon.

Unified Communications: Communications integrated to optimize business processes on the trading floor

Basic description:

Today's organizations must contend with increasingly complex communications environments featuring a wide array of communications methods. Employees, business partners, and customers communicate with one another through infinite combinations of wired, wireless, and mobile phones; voice messaging; e-mail; fax; mobile clients; and rich-media conferencing. Too often, however, these tools are not used as effectively as they could be. The result is information overload, lack of agility, and misdirected communications that delay decisions, slow down processes, drive customers away, and reduce productivity. Ineffective communications also result in missed revenue opportunities because businesses are not prepared to quickly react to market changes.

IP communications solutions have proven their ability to help organizations, especially trading organizations, solve such problems, enabling them to streamline business processes and reduce costs. For years, companies of all sizes have been realizing the benefits that carrying voice, data, and video communications across a common, IP infrastructure can bring.

Unified communications ultimately simplifies and enhances collaboration, improves productivity, and enhances customer service, all of which are increasingly key requirements for the trading environment.

Issues to be discussed:

IP Sizzles

June 4, 2007
I will be speaking at the IP Sizzles conference this summer in Dallas, TX. Robert Messer and the ABP team do a great job putting this conference together and this year marks the first time the show will be called IP Sizzles. Prior to this event it was VoIP Sizzles.

As the market has evolved from VoIP to IP Communications, many show organizers and communications providers have shifted their marketing and content strategies accordingly.

My talk will center around the opportunities to make money for resellers in the IP communications space. What’s hot? What’s not? See you there.

Here are the details.

Ken Camp

June 4, 2007
Be sure to sign up for Internet Telephony Conference & Expo (ITEXPO) now and be part of the world’s premiere IP communications event. World-famous blogger, journalist and author Ken Camp will be there as well (Ken is there anywhere you don’t go? ;) ). It will be good to see Ken again and speaking with him is always refreshing as he has tremendous experience in telecom and datacom having designed very large networks and worked at very large communications organizations.

Incidentally Ken is speaking at ITEXPO but I won’t steal his thunder. Check out his blog for details.
