Recent news in the IP communications space has centered on SunRocket replacements from companies like
Nuvio and
OneSuite. At least in the case of OneSuite, I haven’t even heard of them and their PR/marketing is nonexistent… At least to me. I think switching from SunRocket to OneSuite may be a mistake as I have never heard of the company till now. They do have an ISO 9001:2000 certification but this means little to me as it doesn’t apply to VoIP quality or financial stability. What about the PR, articles, branding and marketing?
Perhaps I am just having a personal backlash towards SunRocket but it is apparent if a company spends little of its time branding, they could be in trouble. Especially if they are consumer facing. This is exactly what happened to SunRocket in fact. Sure it is more complicated than that but when your outward presence goes dark, eventually so do your lights. There is also the fact the market leader, Vonage decided to pursue a business model which is devoid of profit. A model which keeps pushing cheaper and cheaper phone calls.
While the SunRocket demise may be good for Vonage from a competitive standpoint it is less than stellar from an investment point of view. Vonage priced their service too low and now they are paying the price. Furthermore they focused primarily on cost instead of service or features.
Getting back to OneSuite, I do like the company’s
MessageOne service but at $1/month for fax and voicemail to e-mail one wonders how they make money. Wouldn’t it be better to charge $9.95/month and just have a few month special at this low price? I don’t know this company’s financials but again, I am leery after what we witnessed with SunRocket.
Speaking of free calls, one company doing a great job of connecting businesses via Skype is VoSKY and they have recently announced they
interoperate with ShoreTel. In case anyone is interested, both VoSky and ShoreTel deserve an A for their marketing and branding. This is not ever a sure sign of success but it helps.

Here I sit at IP Sizzles. The speakers are doing a great job. Digium founder
and Asterisk creator Mark Spencer really did a great job and devoted much of
his time to answering audience questions -- of which they are many. Some of
the service providers and other Fortune Class companies using Asterisk is
absolutely amazing. I really learned a great deal from him as always.
I kicked things off in the morning and I am my own toughest critic. No one
fell asleep during my talk so I say it was a win. ;) Hopefully Robert Messer
the founder APB and chairman of this conference has lower standards than I
and will invite me back.
Jeff Crilley, author of "Free Publicity" is speaking now and he really
rocks. He was the MC as well. Jeff really helped the audience learn how to
get free publicity and you should buy his book.
Most of the resellers were domestic followed by South America and the
Caribbean. The attendance was great.
My Internet connection is probably 10 baud (remember when we measured things
in baud??) It is a struggle just to wait for Google to come up so you can
imagine how slow I am talking about. You may not hear from me for a while.
Sorry. :(

One of the fastest growing spaces in communications is the wireless market and it is essential all communications equipment providers address this area. To that end, Bluesocket, a company known in the WLAN and security space has just picked up Pingtel the company behind one of the first open-source PBX projects.
Pingtel started life designing and selling state of the art IP phones. The company won a number of awards for their nice designs but they were way ahead of their time. No one anticipated the IP PBX space having such a market slowdown from 2001-2003.
As the IP phone market did lose traction, Pingtel changed gears and launched an IP PBX and soon thereafter decided to make it an open-source project. The company has sound technology but just never gained the traction or mindshare in the market of Asterisk.
Still, the company has a loyal following.
The combination of a PBX and WiFi company makes a great deal of sense. This can be a very good solution for companies looking to a single vendor for true mobility and communications product depth.
It would be a tremendous loss IMHO if the Pingtel brand is not kept alive. There is still great potential in the SMB communications space and with a larger focus on branding, Pingtel could gain share of market. The best way to proceed is with a strong PBX and WLAN brand. These two product lines could and should cross-promote and sell one another.
