Avaya Facephone Prototype Announced

August 31, 2009

At ITEXPO West 2009 in Los Angeles, Avaya made news at their Social
Enterprise
Event when they announced a prototype of Facephone, a rich
application which integrates multimodal communications with social
networking. It is a communications network overlay on Facebook which
does not require users to be friends before communicating.

One application of the solution is to blend the best of customer
contact and social networking. One simple problem this application
solves is allowing users to connect with one another more seamlessly.
For example, customers who need to call a company and want to utilize
a Facebook page to make the connection.

A live demo showed how presence and availabilty integrate to allow
more intelligent communications.

Avaya Social Enterprise Event Video Full House

August 31, 2009

This event has been a great way to start off the event. Chairs had to
be brought in to seat the large crowds. This seems to be a great
indication about what a great week of learning and networking we will
experience this week at ITEXPO West 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention
Center. See you there.

Avaya Social Enterprise: Paul Dunay Video

August 31, 2009

Five billion minutes per day is the amount of time spent on Facebook
and just one tidbit of information shared as Avaya social networking
expert Paul Dunay educates the audience about the social enterprise
here at ITEXPO West 2009.

Another important point made - Facebook is the equivalent to the
invention of the printing press and radio. Check out the video for more.

ITEXPO West 2009 Press Release From LA

August 31, 2009

Here is a release in "rough" form which means it may change before its gets sent out by the team. I thought it was useful enough to get to you early and I hope it helps.

TMC Prepares to Host ITEXPO This Week in Downtown Los Angeles

Downtown Los Angeles Outside Fire Impact Area

August 31, 2009

Hi, all -- just wanted to let you know we are here at the Los Angeles Convention Center (I have been here since last Friday actually) and have been monitoring the situation regarding the fires in the LA mountains. We have been in close contact with the Convention Center and other city officials who want to make sure you know the Convention Center is far from the fires and in a safe area.

The specifics posted on the Los Angeles Convention Center Website are as follows:

REGIONAL FIRE UPDATE: The Los Angeles Convention Center is Outside of the Impact Region, and All Events are Operating Normally.

I am headed to the Avaya Social Media event soon and so far there are over a 1,000 people who have flown into LA to set up for the show and get ready for the conferences. I hope to see you tonight.

Pandora Interview: TMCnet Exclusive

August 31, 2009

Internet radio has really revolutionized the way millions have listened to music and for that I have to thank everyone in the industry for allowing consumers to mark individual songs for more or less play. The amazing thing about Internet radio is that the more you listen and mark the songs you like, the better it gets - adjusting to fit your musical taste like a custom-made glove.

Having said that, I believe we owe Tim Westergren one of the founders of Pandora a great deal for being a pioneer in the space.

To hear Tim's thoughts on 4G, iPhone/AT&T exclusivity and the growth of his company, be sure to read the interview.

3 One-Ups Most App Stores with Handago Partnership

August 31, 2009

While App Stores are all the rage now with carriers and phone companies and even Oracle/Sun's Java jumping on the bandwagon, perhaps one of the most intelligent things a carrier can do is pause, take a breath and partner with an established app store provider doing business forever.

After all, why rebuild a house from scratch when you can lease a good one instead? Handago is a major player in the app store space with its 140,000+ apps and network of 23,000+ content partners and was chosen as a partner with 3, one of the most innovative wireless carriers around. As you may know, 3 also markets a Skype phone - yes, they embrace Skype and don't treat them as an enemy.

ITEXPO West 2009 Monday Morning

August 31, 2009

My team and I are headed to breakfast and it is a beautiful sunny day
in downtown Los Angeles. Here are some shots on the way from the
Westin Bonaventure show hotel to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

ITEXPO West 2009 Sunday Night Dinner

August 31, 2009

I spent the night having dinner with the TMC team at the new LA Live area of shops and restaurants by the Los Angeles Convention Center and Staples Center. We were in ESPN Sports Zone which sports a pair of 103 inch Panasonic TVs with stunning picture quality.

But getting back to downtown Los Angeles, I have been coming to the Los Angeles Convention Center for over a decade and am happy to see such a large amount of investment is taking place in the area. It will probably be unrecognizable to most people who have not seen the area in a while.

ITEXPO West 2009 Sunday Night

August 30, 2009

We are heading into ITEXPO with one day to go and today I got great news from my team who all arrived safely in Los Angeles and are busy preparing the Los Angeles Convention Center for the best ITEXPO ever. The good news? The preregistration for Avaya's social networking kick-off event is over 3X greater than last year's Avaya conference so far. Either this is an indication of the interest in social networking or there are more people coming to the show.

ITEXPO West 2009 Interviews Part 4

August 29, 2009

I have said it repeatedly - the way to get the most out of any conference is to not only attend sessions and the exhibit hall but also network with people who can help you. Perhaps they can help you purchase a product or service or even land that lucrative consulting gig. Maybe you are looking for potential customers or partners at the show. Whatever you seek, if it is in the communications space, there is no better place than ITEXPO to find it.

More Important ITEXPO West 2009 Info

Here is a video I took from the site of the Avaya social media reception which kicks off this week's ITEXPO at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Be sure to be there in Los Angeles Monday 7:00-9:00pm and hear from Paul Dunay (blogger, speaker, and author of Facebook Marketing for Dummies) on how the adoption of social tools will change your enterprise and customer interactions.

At the ITEXPO West 2009 Show Hotel

August 28, 2009

I am here at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles and it is a
gorgeous day here in L.A. I rented a hybrid car and am still getting
used to not hearing noise from the engine when I accelerate. If you
are wondering if there is still traffic here the answer is yes. Not
too terrible though. Hope to see you next week. More to come soon.

ShoreTel CEO to Speak at ITEXPO

August 28, 2009

ITEXPO West 2009 will be the first time the CEO of ShoreTel John Combs will be speaking at our show and we are thrilled to have him there. ShoreTel has made a name for themselves over the years by developing simple-to-use but sophisticated communications products and entered a crowded field, became successful, launched an IPO and is now positioned to benefit from the implosion of Nortel and the ongoing interest in cost-saving, productivity-boosting IP communications solutions.

To learn more be at the show Tuesday Sept. 1, 2009 4:30-5:00 pm for the presentation and be sure to check out his blog entry with some details.

Nice Comments About ITEXPO from Suzanne Bowen

August 28, 2009

Suzanne Bowen over at DIDX is a past ITEXPO exhibitor and I noticed some nice words from her about the show. In her words:

Highly Recommend ITEXPO West and SUPERCOMM

Both conferences attract a huge and robust mix of professionals, developers, early adopters, SMEs, voip companies, anything over IP companies, and more which results in exciting discussions and new innovations. When a conference only concentrates on one type of participant, the results will be the same as always.

Feel free to read the entire post and I hope to see you at the show next week. Suzanne, thanks for the nice words and to my readers - thanks for your ongoing participation.

87% of Executives Agree Face-to-Face Meetings are Best

August 28, 2009

A recent Forbes survey shows business executives prefer face-to-face meetings over those of the virtual type. As expected 58% of respondents said they were travelling for business less today than they were at the beginning of the recession in January 2008, with more than a third (34%) indicating they were travelling much less frequently.

What seems obvious (to me anyway) is that executives still expressed an overwhelming preference for face-to-face meetings, with more than eight out of ten (84%) saying they prefer in-person contact to virtual.

Even more interesting, those that prefer face-to-face meetings believe they facilitate the following: Building stronger, more meaningful relationships (85%), the ability to "read" another person (77%), and Greater social interaction (75%).

Thoughts on Avaya/Nortel and the DOJ

August 28, 2009

Jeff Wiener is President of Digitcom Canada and an Avaya dealer who believes that the DOJ should rubber stamp the Avaya/Nortel merger without much fuss. He explains that the field is extremely competitive and furthermore that the competition is also coming from Microsoft, Skype, Google and hosted VoIP. I agree with all of the above but would say the real challenges for Avaya will continue to be Cisco as they are such a strong data player.

In addition I am surprised open-source didn't even make the list.

ITEXPO and DealCenter: Network With Peers/Customers/Suppliers Now

August 28, 2009

I am happy to hear from a number of companies attending ITEXPO that they are being overwhelmed with requests to meet and do business at the show. This is yet another signal to me that the communications markets are resilient and from what I hear, a number of companies at the show are expecting nice growth for the rest of the year. A few first-time exhibitors told me they think they have sold products to companies who saw them on the exhibitor list. This is great news as ITEXPO has always been the premiere communications event attracting buyers and sellers.

Aspect Touts Tellme Speech Recognition Integration

August 27, 2009

Recently I had a chance to speak with Alan Burnstine - Sr. Product Manager at Aspect and he had some very interesting things to tell me about how his company's IVR/ACD/dialing solutions integrate with Microsoft's Tellme for post-call surveys. As he explains, in this economy you can't necessarily compete on price so you have to compete on service. This means you need to know how good your service is. Moreover, a hosted speech-based survey solution from Tellme is tough to beat as the company handles directory assistance for AT&T and Verizon meaning they have the largest library of speech utterances which in turn means the most information available in one place to help improve speech rec quality.

Italian Antitrust Regulators Target Google

August 27, 2009

Last night in a post about Gmortgage I discussed how Google is helping to kill off the newspaper business with the help of others in the space such as eBay and Craigslist. Today I learned of an antitrust investigation against Google in Italy which was brought on by FIEG or the Italian federation of newspaper editors who are troubled because they feel they have no control over how Google presents their news on its site. Their only options are to block Google or give them full access.

Other than reading this article from the Wall Street Journal I haven't done investigation or read the complaint but on the face of it seems like a weak argument against Google.

ITEXPO: M2M, Broadband Stimulus and Smart Grid Happenings

August 27, 2009

In an effort to keep you up to date on the conversations online regarding ITEXPO, here are some of the latest items on the web I have been tracking.

Over at the DIDX blog there is a discussion of a broadband stimulus workshop at ITEXPO.

On Sys-Con there is a release about ITEXPO - specifically content targeting resellers and a panel I am hosting called "creatively" Reseller Day Workshop.

On TMCnet there is an article which describes an interview between me and Sipera's Adam Boone discussing his participating in ITEXPO, thoughts on the economy and SIP security.

Gmortgage: The Google Empire Extends to Mortgages

August 26, 2009

When online mortgage titans battle, who wins?

In the last few decades fear was struck into heart of investors and entrepreneurs whenever Microsoft decided to invade a new market. After all Microsoft has such a big name and was considered to dominate every space it went into. Microsoft is still looking to maximize shareholder value by launching in space after space (more recently though they have been regrouping, trying to maximize sales in the spaces they are in already).

Dan York on Voxeo Prophecy 10

August 26, 2009

I ran into Dan York the Director of Conversations at Voxeo and had a chance to talk with him about his company's Prophecy 10 software which was running 2,000 calls on 20 netbooks at the recent SpeechTek 2009 in NYC. As Dan explains, a combination of better software and Moore's Law allow these small netbooks to really become efficient multichannel IVR processors. As he points out, imagine what they can do on more powerful computers. Here is the video below for more and an article with details. You can see Dan at ITEXPO next week in Los Angeles if you want to learn more.

Unified Communications = Gym Membership

August 26, 2009

TMC blogger Peter Radizeski has some brief but important comments about the comparison between a gym membership and hosted unified communications. Get the full scoop here and also learn why Peter correctly (you knew I was going to say that ) advises you on the importance of attending ITEXPO next week in Los Angeles.

Sure, UC might not help with your waist line but it will definately help your bottom line

Cash in a Phone System Clunker For VoIP and SIP

August 25, 2009

The cash for clunkers program sponsored by the US federal government is now over but you can still benefit from the cash for phone systems clunkers idea I mentioned a few weeks back. As a reminder, using services like SIP trunking, VoIP and IP communications you can save tens of thousands if not millions of dollars (euros, yen, etc) on phone and conference calls. There is an official cash for phone system clunkers web page now with links to important references such as ITEXPO which is the global gathering place for all things IP communications.

Verizon Rolls Out IP-Based Hosted Speech

August 25, 2009

Verizon recently rolled out IP-based speech recognition and in a conversation with company representatives Alla Reznik and Tom Smith who represent the speech services and IP communications areas for the company, I had a chance to hear about how the company is transitioning from a carrier selling phone service to one which is focusing on services such as IP-based hosted IVR, premise-based IVR and more.

Alla mentioned IP, automated speech and hosting is a winning proposition in IP space. This is especially true in this economy as companies are focusing on customer retention and providing better service is one way to make this happen. Based on Nuance 9, the company's IP-based speech service joins the IP-based IVR solutions Verizon has offered for a few years.

Tom Smith and Alla Reznik tout Verizon's move into IP-based hosted speech

Apple Tablet Official

August 24, 2009

It's official - the much rumored Apple tablet seems to be alive and well and apparently Steve Jobs is scrutinizing every detail of the project. It seems to be getting to the point in fact where Apple employees are uncomfortable with his level of micromanaging. There are obviously many talented engineers and designers at Apple but at the end of the day Steve Jobs has the magic touch and for investors and the Apple faithful, this level of attention from Jobs is a great sign.

ITEXPO West 2009 Interviews Part 3

August 24, 2009

It is almost here - one of the largest global events in communications - ITEXPO West 2009 taking place in Los Angeles September 1-3 2009 at the LA Convention Center. Networking is one of the best reasons to come to any event and in order to properly figure out who you should meet with at the show and which sessions and booths you should visit, we have conducted interviews with many of the companies coming to the show so you can get an idea what people are thinking and moreover help align the expertise of others with your needs. The goal of course is to help all attendees make good use of their time at the show.

With that I posted links to interviews one and two and now here is the third installment.

ITEXPO West 2009 Expo Update

August 24, 2009

We have been seeing a surge of registrations for TMC's ITEXPO, the hotel room block has been oversold for over a month and we feel the industry getting more excited than ever for ITEXPO - the ultimate event which brings global buyers and sellers together in the communications and tech spaces. Carriers (wired and wireless), enterprise decision-makers, resellers, developers and industry all will be at the show in numbers close to last year. It is virtually impossible to determine show attendance in advance but based on the numbers I saw in the registration database this morning, we could have a show at least as busy as least year if not even busier.

Remember that earlier this year TMC had a record show in Miami - ITEXPO East 2009.

GIPS Powers New Yahoo! Video Messenger

August 24, 2009

Utilizing the Global IP Solution's VideoEngine, Yahoo! Messenger will now support free video calling to all Yahoo! Messenger users. Over 133 users worldwide can now take advantage of Yahoo! Messenger 10 which includes high-quality video I witnessed a few weeks back.

Microsoft SecondLight Touch Computing Demo

August 24, 2009

At ITEXPO in Los Angeles last year XD Huang wowed the audience with a video of future touch-screen technologies which integrate the real and virtual worlds. It was quite amazing and I will never forget it. I just can't wait to get these technologies in my current computing experience. Here is more detail - in this video Shahram Izadi explains the future of touch computing called SecondLight from Microsoft's perspective.

Mavenir Enhances Mobile Social Networking

August 23, 2009

Recently I wrote about Facebook and why the company should scare carriers as they take over the customer relationship and moreover commoditize wireless providers by developing people-to-people connectivity applications which run on any carrier network. As of today the wireless carrier still has the ability to one-up Facebook in terms of adding functionality which may not be accessible to the social networking giant. Areas such as device integration and presence are the domain of the carrier for now and if they don't act quickly they may be bypassed entirely as the keeper of the customer relationship.

Shubh Agarwal the Director of Product Marketing & Partnerships at Mavenir Systems had a conversation with me recently which was enlightening as it included a truly useful demo of their products which play in the IMS space.

Tango Networks FMC Update

August 23, 2009

When I last discussed Tango Networks the company focusing on selling FMC solutions to carriers worldwide I mentioned they were focusing on integrating text messaging into corporate phone and email systems. I have written in the past that selling to carriers as a business model is one of the most challenging ways to make money as carriers can wait so long to make decisions.

This is still the case but it is changing as service providers are facing serious disruptive threats and the need to find new services on a continual basis to offset the slowdown in revenue associated with voice and data.

It has been a number of years since its inception and the company seems to be close to going public with a number of deployments.

ZTE Profit Tops Charts, Targets US and 4G

August 23, 2009

On a recent trip to Dallas, Texas I spent time with Raymond Kim the General Manager of Sales and Stacy Rupert the Senior Marketing Manager for ZTE USA and we spoke about the company's ambitious expansion plans in the US. They recently moved to new office space, are expanding in Texas and opening new offices in Atlanta, Seattle and Kansas City in order to be closer to existing and potential customers.

As you might expect from a company providing wireless infrastructure products in emerging and other markets, business is good and the staff is increasing in size. North America is an increasingly important space for the company and in order to generate better results in the area, the company recently restructured.

Blackberry Storm 2 With Piezo Technology and WiFi

August 23, 2009

According to the video below the new Blackberry Storm 2 will perform head and shoulders above the original Storm and the iPhone. With a multitouch screen and Piezo electronics allowing a smoother and faster text inputting system we can expect the sleeker looking Storm 2 to pose a bigger challenge to Apple, Nokia, Microsoft, Google and others. Expect the device to run on the Verizon and AT&T networks and of course WiFi support has been added as well which should allow the smartphone to be a much more worthy adversary to virtually every other competitor on the market which already supports this wireless standard.

My insticts tell me this phone should cause Apple some concern and make it more difficult for Nokia, Google and others to take smartphone share. I am looking forward to using it myself and sharing thoughts and analysis.

Facebook and Twitter Advice from Avaya at ITEXPO in LA

August 21, 2009

Just before ITEXPO in Los Angeles Sept. 1-3 be sure to check out the Avaya session titled Technology on Tap: The Social Enterprise - Are you ready for it? This is where you can learn how to integrate Facebook, Twitter and other platforms into your enterprise and customer communications.

Taking place Monday August 31, 2009 at the (show hotel) Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles from 7:00pm-9:30pm, attendees will have a chance to listen to and meet Paul Dunay the author of Facebook Marketing for Dummies and get a chance to check out Avaya Labs innovations.

Social media is becoming a more important element in corporate marketing and communications and I really give Avaya tremendous credit for choosing to educate companies on the topic.

As an added bonus the event will conclude with some handcrafted ales from the Bonaventure Brewing Company.

Socialism Advice from a Russian Immigrant

August 21, 2009

A good friend of mine Len Kunin immigrated to the US from Russia and has some interesting views on where our country is heading and the pitfalls of socialism. Although I never spoke with his mother on the topic I did get a chance to read Svetlana Kunin's well-written editorial piece on IBD's website.

The goal of this blog entry is not to espouse a political view but I think the world would be a better place if everyone read this link. You see the rhetoric we hear out of Washington today sounds a lot like what they heard in Russia - sacrificing for the common good is one example.

Google Listen: The Mobile Platform Wars Have Begun

August 21, 2009

Google today unveiled Listen, an application which allows users of the company's Android devices to search for content in podcasts based on keywords in the headline and description of the content. To me the incredible thing about this application is that it doesn't work with the iPhone, Windows Mobile or Nokia devices. No, this app is Android only at the moment. And while we may seem "Listen" on other platforms soon, for now Google has the potential to use the app to push sales of Android devices.

ITEXPO West 2009 Happenings

August 20, 2009

Here is a new page dedicated to most of the features, benefits and events at ITEXPO West 2009 which takes place in Los Angeles in 13 days. We will update the page as new things happen or are worth sharing. In addition here is the first show daily from the event which is an electronic newsletter designed to keep you posted on the show. Be sure to register ASAP to get these delivered to you via e-mail.

The Facebook Threat to Carriers

August 20, 2009

Facebook and social networking in general are having challenges monetizing the tremendous volume of page views they generate but undeterred, social networking leader Facebook is expanding its potential to make money by selling virtual and physical goods in its gift shop. The company is running tests which allow users to purchase various goods for credits.

This may be a good time to address the fact that as of now this service is so entrenched that it has replaced telephone numbers as a primary form of communications for many. You could argue FaceBook already has a replaced most every phone company as the network of choice for communications.

Asterisk/Switchvox Telecom Training

August 20, 2009

With all the uncertainty in the world there are some things which we can agree upon. For example the demand for certain areas of technology has increased to grow even while global economies have not. We have seen that video, wireless and broadband are all segments of the market where new opportunities have presented themselves. Open-source too is another area where companies are looking to spend more.

Where to Look For ITEXPO West 2009 Info

August 20, 2009

We have done our utmost to have ITEXPO be the most complete event it can be. There is literally enough information to keep you busy for all three days of the show (Sept 1-3) and you will likely need to bring others with you to keep up with all the opportunities once you are there. If you are trying to absorb it all you will likely want to follow this simple process.

Go to the conference home page at itexpo.com and click on the blue attendee link at the top of the page.

Win a Jeep and Gadgets at ITEXPO

August 20, 2009

The goal of ITEXPO is not only to be the most complete educational experience in the communications and technology markets we also want to make the show fun and exciting. This is why we still give away a car after doing so for a decade at a variety of shows we have hosted. In addition, we will also be giving away the following gadgets at the keynote sessions.

Sling BoxNetbookiPhone 3Gs

Come to all of them in a few weeks in Los Angeles if you want a chance to win these shiny new toys.

iPhone Bug not Specific to Truphone

August 20, 2009

Recently some media outlets reported incorrectly (links intentionally left out) that Truphone is not working on the iPhone due to a bug in Apple's OS. As it turns out this was a mistake which was caused by misreading  a reference to the bug in a Truphone newsletter. I did just test the application out on an iPhone and it is fine. Here is more if you are interested.

Telepresence at ITEXPO West 2009

August 20, 2009

I came across this press release and article on Brightcom's telepresence solutions which will be on display at ITEXPO. Telepresence is just one area of the market which makes the event a must-attend as companies can use the technology to cut travel costs and reduce their carbon footprint. Often in fact a travel budget is cut and an IT department is then left scrambling trying to find a video solution which will take the place of the lost airline seats/dollars. In fact this is why now would be a great time to register to attend the event and come visit Brightcom and the other video vendors at the show.

Carl Ford Discusses 4G, Backhaul, M2M and More

August 20, 2009

I started my day today with a cup of coffee and this article from Carl Ford about some areas of discussion at the upcoming 4GWE show in about two weeks in Los Angeles, California. White space, backhaul and machine to machine communications are just some of the areas he touches on and will be covered at the event. It should make for a crucial educational and networking experience and Carl and I look forward to seeing you at the show.

Name That New Kodak Gadget!

August 19, 2009

Years back I started to utilize the website ofoto to store my pictures. What a great service with its ability to share your photos immediately with others. Years later Kodak purchased the company and integrated it into its backend photo processing systems. I am still a loyal customer of what is now called Kodak Gallery but recently the company changed its policy, forcing users to order a certain dollar amount in order to keep from having their photos deleted.

Making Money in VoIP and IP Communications

August 19, 2009

This is a critical time for resellers and agents as the economy is slow and this puts margin pressure on virtually everyone. Moreover access to credit is more challenging today than ever. This puts VARs and integrators in a precarious position as they look to finance deals they have sold.

Every cloud has a silver lining as they say and the precious metal lining resellers need to be intimately familiar with is IP communications as this market is still vibrant with opportunity.

Slacker Outage

August 19, 2009

Slacker, my favorite streaming radio station at the moment seems to be gaining popularity as I experienced outage issues late in the afternoon yesterday and again just now. I suppose these are good problems to have but not for someone who pays for the service like me.

AT&T Wireless Service Improves

August 19, 2009

As many of you know I carried two devices, a Verizon-based HTC XV6800 and an iPhone. I felt I needed both as the HTC phone was great for making calls and had a keyboard which was handy for long e-mails and blog entries. Cut-and-paste was also something the XV6800 and virtually all devices besides the iPhone had and on more than one occasion this feature was critical in getting a business deal done quickly.

But now that the iPhone has a landscape keyboard and can handle cut-and-paste, I let my two-year Verizon contract lapse and use my iPhone as a phone.

ITEXPO West 2009 Interviews Part 2

August 18, 2009

As a follow-up to the ITEXPO interviews I posted links to last week, here are the latest responses from the industry. Of particular interest are answers from Doug Mohney who explains how he got into the business by being employee number 11 or 12 at DIGEX. I also found the responses from Eli Katz of XConnect enlightening... If you are interested in peering or IP communications you want to give them a read.

How Useful is Twitter Really?

August 18, 2009

I keep talking with company representatives who tell me they are on Twitter but don't know why. Perhaps their feelings have to do with the limited number of followers many companies have - often less than 50. At the opposite end of the spectrum with 7,100 followers is Oracle who has hundreds of thousands of customers and is arguably one of the largest software/hardware companies around.

Perhaps the biggest concern for people relying on Twitter as a marketing vehicle is the research which shows how many tweets are absolutely useless.

Getting Ready for ITEXPO West 2009

August 17, 2009

Hi All, it has been a whirlwind here at TMC today as we get ready for ITEXPO in just two weeks! -- perhaps the most important place you need to be this fall. The show will feature some of the most important content in all of IP Communications. For example we may have one of the best keynoters we have ever had - Sir Terry Matthews - and this from a company which has hosted other famous keynoters such as Ron Insana, Carly Fiorina, Al Gore, Tom Ridge, Michael Powell and many others.

Here are just a few of the attractions you and your company cannot afford to miss:

I Love GoGo Inflight Wireless

August 14, 2009

On my way out to Dallas from New York's LGA the American Airlines flight I was on had signs all over it telling the world it had internet access. My smile was broad with corners of my mouth certainly touching my ears. I even skipped downloading all my email to my laptop when I got to my seat (a typical ritual) as I could just work remotely when we took off.

I connected to whatever networks I could find when we were in the air but no dice.

Terry Matthews to Keynote ITEXPO West 2009

August 14, 2009

Over 70 companies founded by one person in one industry - communications/technology (to be fair he owns hotels and golf courses as well). Over the years, tens of thousands of people were hired because of the vision of Sir Terry Matthews. He is not only a legend in communications and technology he is a legend in business.

Matthews has made his money but has not stopped investing in new companies. In fact he is running at full speed (perhaps flying is a more appropriate term - his corporate jet is among the fastest built) hiring college graduates to look for new opportunities and start companies to fill the voids they uncover.

Paula Bernier Joins TMC

August 14, 2009

It is with great pleasure I welcome Paula Bernier to the TMC family as our new Executive Editor in charge of NGN, Unified Communications and Internet Telephony Magazines. On my trip to Texas this week, the industry seemed very excited to have Paula on our team. Hiring Paula continues our commitment of investing in our readers, sponsors and advertisers and I hope you enjoy her writing and editing style.

Paula's background in the market aligns perfectly with her new role as she has worked with a number of magazines in our space.

SIP + Smart Grid = Opportunity

August 13, 2009

As you probably know I am extremely enthused about the idea of the smart grid as it is not only necessary for the next generation of power generation and consumption in the world but just as importantly because the new grid will interface using communications and networking protocols. What this means is massive, unprecedented opportunity for our industry as a smart grid is developed.

It further means telecom and datacom players who are paying attention are also salivating at the prospect.

To further educate the market on the smart grid, TMC has partnered with Intelligent Communications Partners (ICP) to put together an event in the space and a web portal which will be the leading source of information in the space.

ITEXPO West 2009 Interviews

August 11, 2009

In a few short weeks one of the largest communications shows of the fall, ITEXPO will take place with 6,000-7,000 decision-makers looking to purchase products and map out a strategy for their future. Enterprises, resellers, carriers and developers will all be at the show from just under 100 countries.

This year's event has more content than any prior show (mainly via collocated conferences and summits) and I have and will continue to share the details on this blog.

But for now it makes sense to post a number of interviews I have done with people who will be at the show.

Volkswagen Dealer Chooses Megapath For IP Communications

August 10, 2009

Imagine my happiness when I saw a press release issued about local dealer, Riverbank Volkswagen deploying leading edge IP communications solutions. The news brought back fond memories because in the mid-nineties I made a decision to give away a brand new yellow Volkswagen Beetle at a TMC trade show because I happened to see one at this dealer. Moreover the press release reminded me of my recent trip to Northern California where I visited with Megapath the company who supplied the dealer with their voice-optimized, private IP-based Duet service, which is designed to increase productivity and customer service levels.

According to Andrew Goldstein, President of Riverbank Volkswagen,"MegaPath's cost-effective, fully-managed Duet service

gives the entire team from sales to technicians to office personnel a reliable voice and data service that translates into superior customer service and improved interaction with corporate headquarters." He continued, "While we've had other providers in the past, there was an issue of reliability and excessive downtime in the service.

The Browser is the Computer

August 10, 2009

Years ago Sun CEO Scott McNealy said the Network is the Computer - Google hopes he's right

Apple can do no wrong - they never could. The company has always had zealous fans who considered Apple products to be like their own superficial entry into some sort of consumer electronics cult. I lived this firsthand when I was in MIS and I decided to deploy PC-based desktop publishing in the eighties.

Thank You all For the Recognition

August 7, 2009

I felt quite honored today as I learned my communications and technology blog was on a top VoIP blog list over at Focus - thanks David Hakala. Other names on the list include TMC contributor Jon Arnold. Jon is also a partner in TMC's Smart Grid portal and event which takes place in collocation with ITEXPO in 24 days in Los Angeles, CA.

Notable industry figure Jeff Pulver made the list as did Andy Abramson - the prolific blogger and PR 2.0 leader.

How to Keep Your Job

August 6, 2009

Although there may not be any such thing as a job which is 100% secure it is likely these ten tips will help you if your company decides to cut heads. Kim Goff does an admirable job in this article but I am not 100% sure I agree with Tip #10 which says: Speak up. If you see something that can be improved, or if there's a task that could make use of your expertise, share it! When you give a voice to your ideas, opinions and thoughts about how to improve the overall performance of your organization, managers and co-workers will take notice.

Cash For Clunker Phone Systems

August 5, 2009

The domain name in the new logo below is not active as of this writing but will be soon

The US Government looking to increase car sales and reduce fuel consumption embarked upon an unprecedented campaign called Cash For Clunkers which paid car buyers up to $4,500 per car traded up for a newer, fuel-efficient vehicle. What started as a $1 billion dollar government program has quickly been used up and the Feds are reacting quickly and will potentially allocate a few billion dollars more towards this program.

While the government has given a massive incentive to consumers to get them into showrooms, other industries such as the technology space have been able to leverage similar savings for companies looking to upgrade their phone systems.

Podcast: Broadband in Emerging Markets

August 5, 2009

Fierce competition among emerging market broadband providers is a rule as so many carriers and subsequently vendors are coming to market with low-cost solutions. ECI Telecom is differentiating itself in a variety of ways by growing new markets for the service providers who rely on their solutions.

Broadband in emerging markets is a hot topic because many nations have realized connectivity = economic growth. One of the players in this space is ECI Telecom and I was pleased to have a conversation with company CMO Laura Howard who gives us an overview of what is happening in the world of emerging market for wired broadband.

Why Google Purchased On2

August 5, 2009

Today Google announced it will buy mobile video codec company On2 Technologies for $106.5 million in stock. While Dan Rayburn does a great job of pointing out why this deal wasn't done, I submit the reason has more to do with video distribution market in homes and on the go. Rayburn elaborates when he says this deal was likely not done for the codec alone. I would say it has more to do with the video technology itself as well as the need to integrate the giant backend of YouTube content with mobile devices of all types.

Deciphering xG Technology

August 5, 2009

We write thousands of stories each month at TMCnet and occasionally among all of this content we get a response to an article which is threatening or involves profanity towards us or one of our writers. Having said that, I happened to forward news about xG Technology to my editorial team a while back and I mentioned to them to be sure to research it carefully as the company is very controversial.

Why are they controversial? Well because they seem to make claim after claim regarding wireless technology which is claimed to be 25 times cheaper than comparable WiMAX equipment at 1,000 times the efficiency - yet it isn't widely deployed.

Are Tablets the Next Big Opportunity?

August 4, 2009

Will IP communications get a massive shot in the arm via a wave of new tablet computers?

If you are an IP communications company you have to be salivating at the opportunity afforded by Moore's Law. Moreover when a new category called netbook was launched, the market for IP voice and video solutions just grew along the growth curve that netbooks carved out.

Thanks to netbooks and smartphones consumers have become accustomed to cheap but powerful computing platforms which allow more effective communications.

When the iPhone 3G S was rolled out many were not happy there was no front-facing camera included.

Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Apple Board

August 3, 2009

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has stepped down from Apple's board. Many are surprised Schmidt didn't step down earlier but certainly when Apple did the about face on Google Voice which sparked questions from the FCC, the stage was set. According to CNBC - Schmidt's about face was likely a result of a nudge - perhaps from Apple - taking into account the current political climate. Comments from the cable television station say Schmidt mentioned as recently as this past Saturday that he doesn't need to step down.
