Google Uses Phone to Reconnect Egypt to Internet

January 31, 2011

Recently I discussed the purchase of SayNow by Google – a voice platform company complete with an API. Now, Google has taken the SayNow technology and collaborated with Twitter to allow users to call specific phone numbers to have their voice messages converted to tweets. At the moment there is no speech to text translation and this message for example is in Arabic. But thankfully the person calling also speaks English as evidenced by his mention of “adding pressure.”

I believe he worked at Siemens at the time. I noticed Stefan just posted a page on his Video Networker blog with regards to all of the speaking engagements he has at the show and collocated events. Verizon Drives Stake Through Heart of Net Neutrality

January 27, 2011

Updated with modified quote from Hunter Newby January 28, 2011, 8:15 AM EST

Updated again January 28, 2011, 4:37 PM EST for grammatical reasons

My views have shifted on net neutrality over the years - to the point where I firmly believe that carriers have the right to recoup investments they make in networks.

Austin, Texas Selected For ITEXPO West 2011

January 27, 2011

I have some very exciting news to share regarding ITEXPO. I alluded to it a few weeks back and now it’s here. ITEXPO West 2011 will be moving to the Austin Convention Center in Austin Texas, on September 13-15, 2011. ITEXPO was launched in San Diego, CA at the Hotel Del Coronado and moved to Long Beach and eventually Los Angeles.

If Super WiFi is A Dream, At Least I'm in Good Company

January 27, 2011

Updated Jan 27, 2011, 8:01 pm EST.

It’s no secret that both Microsoft and Google are looking at white spaces and Super WiFi as an area of growth allowing inexpensive broadband wireless signals to be transmitted over long distances.

But technology is difficult to predict – we didn’t know for sure tablets were going to cannibalize PC sales but they are and we didn’t know small, cheap hard drives were going to cut the legs out from the large, expensive hard drive market. You may know that in 1997 when I went to COMDEX and told the world TMC was going to launch a magazine called Internet Telephony – people laughed and told me it wasn’t an industry.

Google and SayNow, What it Means To Telecom

January 26, 2011

The search leader made the acquisition in part to gain social network traction as well as to become entrenched as a communications API and service provider

Many surmise that part of the reason Larry Page is taking over the CEO role at Google has to do with the need to compete more effectively against Facebook whose growth in page views is nothing short of staggering. In the pursuit to keep up and surpass the social networking juggernaut, the search leader is throwing as many ideas as it can against the wall hoping something will stick. There was the launch of Google Buzz in February 2010 which has strong integration into the Google Reader.

Facebook Ad Connect Coming Soon?

January 26, 2011

Last week I detailed 11 things Facebook needs to do with their $1.5B but in terms of rapid revenue production the #1 item on the list should have been developing a Google Adsense competitor. In the last year or so Google has modified how it shows ads, taking into account search behavior before presenting an offer. This can lead to some interesting side-effects. For example, when I was in a meeting with a prominent company in the communications space, someone asked me why an ad for dresses is showing on TMCnet - I had to explain how Google uses past search behavior to show ads.

Silver Lake on Tech, Jobs and Growth

January 26, 2011

Silver Lake Partners has a portfolio of companies worth $30B including Skype, Avaya, IPC, Groupon, Zynga and Sunguard and in a recent interview with the WSJ's Alan Murray, CEO Glenn Hutchins discusses how well the US technology market is doing in terms of job growth. In addition he mentioned how much construction is being done to create data centers to support the dramatic growth in information technology in the US and abroad.

Next week at ITEXPO in Miami, you'll get to meet with the communications and tech community - many of the companies are part of the Silver Lake family in fact. I am really looking forward to being there and speaking with these companies myself and hope to see you there.

Atomic9 Rumblebuds add Subwoofer to Earbuds

January 25, 2011

Let's start with with the facts... You can't add a subwoofer in the traditional sense to your earbuds because a subwoofer typically consists of standalone driver in a wooden enclosure with separately powered amplifier. But when Fusion Electronics, the parent company of Atomic9 told me their new $50 rumble-vibration gaming earbuds pack the punch of a subwoofer without the need for power I was intrigued.

To test the headphones they sent me, I used an iPhone 4 to play More from Usher as well as Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major from Beethoven.

What I found was earbuds which actually produced vibrating bass. It actually takes getting used to.

Verizon iPhone Unlimited Monthly Data For $30

January 25, 2011

For a limited time you can get an unlimited data plan on AT&T when using the iPhone so you better hurry if you are planning on making the switch. Well, once it is available that is. TMC's Lance Whitney recently discussed the pros and cons of a move to the Verizon iPhone via a TMCnet article and now that more details are becoming available, those on the fence have more information to help them with the decision.

At some point in the future, Verizon may go to a tiered pricing plan meaning those of you who know you will switch to Verizon and are heavy data users will likely have to switch sooner rather than later.

One reminder - you will not be able to use Verizon's 4G network to surf the web and check email while using the iPhone on Verizon's network. AT&T has received much criticism for its voice quality and dropped calls but it does excel in allowing customers to simultaneously use voice and data.

Getting to Know ITEXPO Participants

January 24, 2011

AT TMC, we painstakingly attempt to ensure you know as much about the participating companies at our events as possible before the conference so you can get a sense of who is there, where there expertise lies and if they may have something of value to offer you as you look to make purchasing decisions in the world of technology and communications. As a result we survey ITEXPO speakers and exhibitors before the event and ask questions which can help you connect with thought leaders you believe might be of assistance at the event.

Not everyone answers but we do send the questions to hundreds of companies and they seem to trickle in each day. Here is the list of people and companies who responded to my questions and links to their answers. I truly hope you find it useful.

Oh and one note you should know...

My Conversation With Chairman Kevin Martin Re: ITEXPO

January 24, 2011

As I got off the phone with former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin today after discussing his upcoming keynote, I couldn't help to feel great that ITEXPO will be one of the most exciting events of the year with respect to communications and technology. You see, when FCC Chairmen are no longer working in their government-appointed position, they are able to speak quite freely regarding the issues which have tremendous implications on virtually every aspect of tech and our lives. I say "our lives" because today connectivity has become an integral part of living in a modern, uber-connected world.

In a conversation I just had with the Chairman (the title is for life) we had a chance to touch on some of the issues he will discuss onstage, next week at ITEXPO in Miami, FL. Most likely this session will be in a Q&A format where I will be posing questions.

While the questions haven't been formalized, you can tentatively expect us to devote time to network neutrality, 4G/LTE, wireless spectrum allocation and usage, the small cell market (femto, pico, etc) and other important issues which govern our everyday usage of tech.

At ITEXPO, this one session is just one example of crucial perspective you cannot get from virtually anywhere else because, like I said, the Chairman has tremendous freedom to speak his mind.

-50F With Wind Chill. Escape to ITEXPO in Miami

January 24, 2011

You know I would never stoop to reminding you about the weather to persuade you to attend what I believe to the be the best tech and telecom conference in the world - OK, maybe I would.

So I was driving along this morning on the way to work and noticed I couldn't feel any of my fingers. I decided to check to make sure I was wearing gloves. I was. Then I realized I couldn't feel any of my toes and yes I had shoes on.

I then looked at the temperature reading and it said one degree.

Pope Meet Facebook, Facebook Meet Pope

January 24, 2011

Missionaries to become missionaries 2.0

Religion likely started around the time man learned how to use language and for something so old, it is always fascinating to see it update itself. For example, Last November TMCnet reported how the Vatican was upgrading their TV station to HD.

But HD TV is so yesterday - social networking is all the rage in 2011. After all, Facebook just pulled in $1.5B, has a valuation in the $70B range and it seems that if you have access to electricity you are on the ubiquitous service.

And as such, the Pope thought it made sense to weigh in on social networking by simultaneously praising it and discussing some of its challenges. His main point is that online friendships can't substitute for real ones and moreover, he warned about the risks of depersonalisation, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.

"It is important always to remember that virtual contact cannot and must not take the place of direct human contact with people at every level of our lives," Pope Benedict XVI said in the message for the Catholic Church's World Day of Communications.

ITEXPO Hashtag is #ITEXPO, Receptions and More

January 23, 2011

Good evening readers,

Just a note to let you know the hashtag for ITEXPO on Twitter will simply be #ITEXPO. You will see enhanced levels of twitter messaging at the show (Twitter stream at keynotes for example) allowing the ITEXPO and related technology and communications communities to stay connected.

A good way to keep track of news from the show is to set up a column with search terms ITEXPO and/or #ITEXPO in programs such as Hootsuite, Tweetdeck and/or your mobile Twitter app.

The show officially begins in nine days and here are some links you may find useful:

Thank you for your message... Please be advised I will be out of the office Feb 2-4, 2011 attending TMC's ITEXPO in Miami.

11 Things Facebook Should Do With Their New $1.5B

January 21, 2011

Facebook has just received yet another billion dollars in investment and this on top of the $500M from Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky technologies according the company. This is what Facebook should do with the money.

1)      Start an app store: These days you are no one in tech without one – they need to find a way to get in on the game and leverage their community in a way which can be easily monetized.

2)      Compete with iTunes/Netflix: If everyone is in Facebook, all the time then why wouldn’t they consider buying their media where they live.

Online Community and SEO Interview

January 21, 2011

I was just interviewed on a podcast by Peter Radizeski who in addition to being a TMC blogger is an expert on the telecom channel and a sought out social media and marketing consultant. On the online community building and SEO podcast we discussed not only how to improve search rank but how to select keywords and use call to action to ensure success. We also had a chance to discuss TMC’s online communities which are news-generated and help our sponsors with their branding, thought leadership, social networking and lead generation. I Hope you like it.

Apple Shatters the Hardware is Unprofitable Rule

January 21, 2011

What you can learn from a company that shatters conventional wisdom like an elephant in a Swarovski store

Before you line up the virtual rotten tomatoes to hurl at me through the screen I want to give you the following disclosure… I am going to defend Goldman Sachs. You see, John Cassidy just wrote an article in the New Yorker to explain that is Apple twenty-times as profitable as Goldman Sachs when measured by return on assets.

He goes on to explain part of the reason is that Apple doesn’t record its patents for products like the iPad as capital – then again he points out Goldman doesn’t do this for its trading algorithms either.

Polycom Has Great Earnings

January 20, 2011

ITEXPO East 2011 speaker and exhibitor Polycom just announced earnings which were ahead of expectations. Fourth quarter net-income soared two and a half times to $33M or 37 center per share. Earnings were 49 cents per share beating analyst estimates of 43 cents.

Another ITEXPO participant Adtran announced amazing earnings this week and it is a very exciting time to be in the tech and communications spaces.

As always, there are winners and losers but it seems for companies who can execute and hedge their bets by playing in multiple markets, you can do very well - as evidenced by the positive earnings news from many players in the market.

See these and many other leading tech companies at ITEXPO in Miami in about two weeks.

Crucial Google and HP News

January 20, 2011

Here's a quick digest of the news you need to know from the past hour:

  1. 4 HP directors are stepping down - these are the one who pushed out Mark Hurd in the weird soap opera style of the "he said," "she said" variety. Joel Hyatt, John Joyce, Robert Ryan and Lucille Salhany will step down, and five new members will take their places on Friday, bringing the total number of board members to 13. The five incoming members of HP's board are: Shumeet Banerji, CEO of Booz & Company; Gary Reiner, formerly of General Electric; Patricia Russo, former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent; Dominique Senequier, CEO of AXA Private Equity; and Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay.
  2. HP is also investigating Hurd's exit from the company. This is truly the never-ending tech story.
  3. Google had a blow out quarter and Eric Schmidt is stepping down as CEO - to be replaced by past CEO Larry Page.
  4. Bonus news: Headsets are getting accelerometers meaning soon we may not have to press buttons at all to communicate.

Former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to Keynote ITEXPO

January 20, 2011

I just got word from my team that Former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin will be giving a keynote at ITEXPO on Wednesday, Feb 2nd, 2011 at 5:00 PM EST at the Miami Beach Convention Center! This is huge news and as a result, I apologize in advance for some scheduling changes we'll be making to accommodate his participation.

Two things are worthy of sharing:

  1. FCC Chairman are best as speakers when they are not chairman... Only then do you get any insight on their positions on various matters. I learned this when FCC Chairman Michael Powell gave a great keynote to ITEXPO attendees a few years back and was able to speak freely.
  2. Chairman Martin will speak about the femtocell market and related topics such as LTE/4G in a 30 minute presentation which will be followed by Q&A.

This addition makes the event that much more critical to attend and we hope to see you in two weeks in Miami at ITEXPO East 2011 and collocated events.

Tom Keating's take.

$25 Per MB for M2M Just Tip of Iceberg

January 20, 2011

Stacey Higginbotham points out $25/MB is a tremendous amount of revenue and a great reason for carriers to love M2M. Another reason carriers love it has to do with the fact that that the old models of ARPU, churn and device subsidies go out the window. Sprint's Wayne Ward explained this to me in October of 2009 and went on to say you don't even need to deal with customers regarding rates as the machines do all the talking.

Finally, he explained you can even use your older networks as M2M apps typically do not require tremendous speed or throughput.

Obviously these are some of the reasons why carriers are excited about the M2M market - not to mention market projections of 2.1 billion M2M connections in ten years. This is up from 61 million today.

Steve Hilton Principal Analyst at Analysis Mason says, "With a year-on-year growth rate of between 36% and 52%, M2M seeks to be one of the fastest-growing connectivity sectors in the next decade."

All this M2M talk reminds me of the upcoming M2M Evolution conference in Miami in two weeks.

ShoreTel Filling the Nortel Void?

January 20, 2011

Jeff Wiener at The Telecom Blog predicts 2011 will be a huge year for ShoreTel and as supporting evidence he cites distribution deals with Catalyst/Scansource and Westcon - traditional Avaya partners. He quotes ShoreTel's Kevin Gavin who says the company is looking to fill the void left at the table in the wake of Avaya's Nortel acquisition.

Indeed, ShoreTel has been seeing positive momentum in terms of perception - there is no question about that and I wouldn't be surprised to see them gaining market-share in the future.

Mitel could have certainly been the company to step up to the plate - they have always had great technology and the Inter-Tel acquisition of a few years back really broadened their product line and distribution. The challenge is the company's outward communications have been spotty - they promote themselves and then go dark. Mostly they're dark.

ITEXPO East 2011 Attendance Now Up 61%

January 19, 2011

Look, no one wants to be in a position where they under-deliver, least of all me but my expo team tells me the attendance numbers in aggregate for ITEXPO and the collocated events are now up 61% over last year while paid attendance is up 88% over last year.

And yes, the numbers are accelerating... Just six days ago the numbers were 52% ahead of last year.

The show is over ten years old and has matured so it would be quite an accomplishment to see 61% more people than last year's ITEXPO which was very-well attended.

I like to be conservative so I always look for alternative reasons for numbers being higher than previous years. For example, last year, there was tremendous economic uncertainty  and people really waited to sign up for shows until the last second.

So it is conceivable the increased attendance rate will normalize as we get closer. We'll have to wait and see if this is the case.

January 19, 2011

ITEXPO gold sponsor and TMC Global Online Community customer Adtran just announced blowout earnings – fourth quarter profit doubled and sales grew 33%. Net income was $35.96 million or $0.56 per share. Broadband growth was 75% over the previous year led by sales of the Total Access 5000 platform while internetworking grew 37% and optical grew 24%.

Some of this growth was likely due to the Government’s Broadband Stimulus rollout but the declaration of a 9 cent per share dividend shows there is strong confidence that the company sees a bright future even as the program has ended.

iTunes Opens to Adult Content

January 19, 2011

Playboy to be the first confirmed adult content offering on Apple’s industry-leading tablet

I’ve been extremely critical of the iTunes App Store because I don’t believe we should allow companies to censor applications and other content. Now it seems, the rules for the Apple App Store may be loosening as Hugh Hefner tweeted that uncensored issues of Playboy will be available on the iPad in March, 2011. This is likely going to be one of the offerings relating to the new subscription model available in the store and to be leveraged by News Corp with their launch of The Daily.

Obviously I believe the less censorship, the better and this is great news for Apple customers as it gives them the freedom to do what they want with their devices. It does seem ironic though – since Steve Jobs himself said in May of last year that these restrictions were put in place to give customers freedom from porn. But for Playboy lovers, it seems this loss of freedom will likely be met with big smiles.

Update: Apparently, Hefner was referring to a Safari-based service which will be uncensored.

The latest bit of expo news of interest is sponsors to the Regulatory 2.0 Workshop. Google is the official video streaming sponsor and AT&T, Towerstream, Xirrus and Sonus Networks are some of the other sponsors.

Wireless Costs Plummeting Yet We Pay More

January 18, 2011

It’s funny really, we keep hearing how much lower wireless costs are but in reality carriers are devoting almost all of their resources to wireless upgrades and marketing because they are making a killing. And yes, as rates go down, companies seem to be spending more and more and more.

That’s why I was happy to see that The Telecom Expense Management Industry Association (TEMIA) will be at ITEXPO in Miami two weeks from now helping companies of all sizes manage their wireless and other telecom expenses. Telecom costs are not a given and an entire industry of telecom expense management companies have evolved over the years to help organizations manage the complexities and escalating costs of voice and data plans of the wired and wireless variety.

Rediscover the American Dream

January 18, 2011

In the last few years, it has become fashionable in America to bash the American Dream. This is like South America bashing soccer or the French bashing surrendering – it should be unheard of. Perhaps part of the problem is Wall Street bankers have become the poster children for the American dream. And this shouldn’t be the case – especially when you consider the tens of thousands of entrepreneurs who start businesses and are responsible for generating hundreds of billions of dollars in aggregate revenue – much of which comes from other countries.

What Microsoft Kinect Defection to Google Means

January 18, 2011

Could this be the first shot in the GBUI wars?

If you are deeply involved as part of the Microsoft Xbox Kinect team, you would think there is no better job on earth than to work on a product which is selling in the millions of units, is ahead of projections and is one of my favorite technologies of all time. In fact, I would imagine Microsoft would be horrified that anyone from this team would consider leaving – especially defecting to Google. Yet, Johnny Chung Lee, Wii Hacker and an integral part of the Kinect team just left Microsoft to become a “rapid evaluator” at Google.

Communications Expert Ricca Discusses the Future & ITEXPO Appearance

January 18, 2011

One of the great advantages of attending a live conference is the ability to network with some of the brightest minds in the industry such as analysts and other industry thought leaders who help give us a sense of where markets are heading. The tech space is not slowing down from an innovation perspective – and it certainly isn’t going to see less product introductions in the future. How do you determine how the latest products and solutions can help your business? Is the cloud right for you or is an on-premise system a smarter move based on your security and compliance needs?

gHome Improves Google Voice

January 18, 2011

Last week, TMCnet’s Charles West broke the news regarding TELTUB introducing gHome which links up with your Google Voice account as well as Facebook to allow $5/month calling after a free trial. Yesterday, TMCnet’s Tom Keating reviewed the gHome service with a SIP softphone from Ekiga and he was very happy with the fact that using iHome you can get all the Google Voice features and use any SIP device. And if you’ve seen how many SIP devices Tom has here at TMC HQ, you’d understand the reason for his happiness.

Tom’s review is extremely detailed and worth a read… In it for example, he explains how you can integrate the service with your iPhone.

Steve Jobs Unveils Leave 2.0

Steve Jobs is taking his second medical leave from Apple and we should all be concerned as this tech icon is the closest thing we have to an irreplaceable entrepreneur. Many companies the size of Apple are too big to grow effectively and resort to acquisitions to fuel their increased earnings. Not so with Apple.

Broadvox Reaches For the Cloud With Cypress Buy

January 17, 2011

20 things you need to know but didn’t have had time to ask

SIP Trunking leader Broadvox just completed their acquisition of Cypress Communications resulting in a nationwide VoIP and MPLS-enabled network blending the benefits of traditional telecommunications with the latest in IP trunking.

In a conversation with David Byrd, the company’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing I had a chance to ask a number of questions which shine light on this deal.

Twitter is Best Home for MySpace

January 14, 2011

Sure Myspace is troubled, just let go of about half their staff and will likely be sold off. Obviously Google, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL come to mind as acquirers. Google could potentially avoid antitrust concerns because Facebook is such a force in social networking but merging disparate back-end systems would be a nightmare for company who counts computing efficiency as one of its core strengths. Microsoft makes a lot of sense but with a financial stake in Facebook, this may not make the most sense for the company.

GENBAND Completes Cedar Point Acquisition

January 14, 2011

Analysts liken Charlie Vogt the CEO of GENBAND (pictured) to John Chambers and his presentation style and confidence shined through at the company’s recent Perspectives event which I live blogged. It was at this conference where I realized Charlie would be someone the industry should hear more from. Under his leadership the company has assembled a mini Alcatel-Lucent or Cisco – depending on how you look at it.

The Ultimate Social CRM Prank

January 14, 2011

While typical negative social CRM experiences are sent via Twitter and Facebook, occasionally companies get their reputation tarnished via Youtube. This is the case in one of the most elaborate pranks ever where a container was dropped in front of Mobistar’s headquarters in Belgium blocking all traffic. Security at this building with 2,000 employees called the phone number listed on the container only to be connected to the comedians inside the container who repeatedly put security on hold, played music and basically drove them crazy.

This may be one of the most sophisticated acts ever seen of people acting out against a company in response to poor customer service.

Will Apple Pull the Plug on Intel?

January 14, 2011

An interesting difference between Droid devices and those of the iOS variety is that Apple gadgets require users to plug the devices into a computer for OS updates while the Google Droid works over the air or OTA. So last night’s earnings release from Intel which touted a record quarter in-part is influenced by the fact that the more iPods, iPhones and iPads there are, the more computers you need to sync, backup and upgrade the OS.

And regardless of whether you choose a Mac or PC to connect to your gadget, you are in fact using an Intel processor.

But now that carriers have gone from unlimited data plans to tiered where they get paid to provide more bandwidth, what is to stop them from allowing Apple to provide operating system updates OTA?

Irony is

ITEXPO East 2011 Attendance up 52%

January 13, 2011

For those of you who attended the ITEXPO and related events last year in Miami, you remember it was a very strong show with great attendance. The conference usually draws from all over the world – especially Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Central and Eastern US and of course Canada.

The even better news about this upcoming event Feb 2-4, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention center is the numbers are trending much better than last year. My marketing team just sent over the comparable stats and here they are:

  • Overall attendance up 52% over same time last year
  • Paid conference attendance up 54% over same time last year
  • Loews hotel block up 31% over last year

The event has certainly grown and there are currently 13 collocated events as follows.

Tablets Disrupt Hard Drives

January 13, 2011

The Disruptor Gets Disrupted

A common example of a disruptive technology is inexpensive, less reliable hard drives which when configured into RAID (redundant systems allowing one or two disk failures to not bring down an array) systems created a superior product at a lower price than larger drives available at the time. Now it seems, one of the latest disruptive products – the tablet computer is slowing down the hard drive space as the newer tablets use SSD or solid state drives instead of hard disks.

In fact The Information Network says in a new report that PC shipments dropped nearly 5% in Q4 of 2010 in the US, in-part due to booming tablet sales.

An App Store is an App Store

January 13, 2011

I generally agree with Microsoft that the term “app” is generic – meaning it is a general word used commonly and not associated with any company or brand. Certainly the term “killer app” has been around for decades so the use of the term “app” is not new. The term “store” too is generic so it is tough to consider “app store” to be anything but generic.

It is worth pointing out I don’t recall the term “app store” to be exceedingly common before Apple started using it.

Is Apple the Biggest Facebook Threat?

January 13, 2011

Now I am not saying Apple is today ready to take on Facebook but boy are getting to a point where the pieces are lining up nicely for the maker of super-cool gadgets to combine the best of its offerings into a seamless social network.

Rather than talk about all the pieces, let’s instead begin the discussion realizing the massive marketshare Apple has and is gaining in consumer electronics. Add to this the increase in Mac shipments the company continues to boast. It is this network of devices which enabled the company to launch a product like FaceTime for video conferencing by immediately interconnecting millions of devices worldwide.

ITEXPO East 2011 News Begins

January 13, 2011

The ITEXPO tsunami of news is beginning and one recent announcement which caught my eye was that snom will be showcasing  its all new snom ONE collection of IP PBXs. The product line includes three versions - from free with ten extensions to a blue version which supports up to 150 extensions with support for five different businesses. There will be lots more news coming and for an idea of all the excitement and information which be generated from the event, check out the videos from the last ITEXPO in Los Angeles last fall.

Remember, the show is Feb 2-4, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention center - be sure to register now.

Dialogic's Jim Machi discusses his company with me and also touches on the history of the Los Angeles Convention Center where we met over a decade earlier at Computer Telephony Expo or CT EXPO - anyone else remember the flying pigs?

How Apple is Greasing the Wheels of Churn

January 13, 2011

It’s a pain to change mobile devices and carriers. Thankfully over the years many wireless providers have made the process go more smoothly by porting address books in their retail stores. But Apple has gone the extra mile allowing their devices to seamlessly work with most of the existing data from previous phones. In other words upgrading from an iPhone to an iPhone 3G to a 3GS and 4G has been a fairly straightforward task.

Staying in Business in Tough Times

January 12, 2011

Recently Smart Business Magazine requested I write for them and for my first article I outlined fifteen things you can do to stay in business or grow your company in a tough economy.

Smart Business

is a management journal providing insight, advice and strategy for C-level executives of fast-growth, middle-market and large companies. Our publications are designed as concise packages that meet the information needs of senior decision makers of these companies. Each edition of Smart Business features a cover story on a high-profile local business or community leader on what makes them successful.

For me, this opportunity is rewarding as I get to share some things I have learned over the years competing against some of the biggest names in the business and through multiple bubble bursts... Dotcom, telecom, housing, credit, etc.

Here are the tips...

Cablevision Merges Facebook Photos with TV

January 12, 2011

Pay-TV companies have a tough road ahead of them as content providers are pressing for more compensation and advertising is under pressure in-part because of the economy and the use of DVRs. So raising prices is one of the options available to these companies and many are doing so. Cablevision for its part is raising prices but not as much as many of the other companies in the space. And as expected, record numbers of people are disconnecting their paid television service because they simply can’t afford it.

SIPNOC: A New Conference for SIP Network Operators

January 12, 2011

The SIP Forum launches a much-needed event.

There is a rapid transformation of carrier and enterprise networks taking place utilizing IP communications and SIP. Surprising, to date there have been precious few places for the techies in the carrier space to get together and do what techies do. No I am not talking about consuming candy and caffeine here – instead, a new network operator event called SIPNOC will bring the community together for some serious discussions about issues affecting the space such as SIP trunking, interoperability, FoIP, testing, emergency services as well as discussions regarding many other challenges and opportunities.

All iPhone 4s Can Soon Become Mobile Hotspots

January 12, 2011

You may have heard the Verizon iPhone will have the ability to become a personal hotspot which will connect up to five devices. You may have further decided this is a reason to switch to Verizon from AT&T. Now it turns out AT&T is evaluating this feature as well and may roll it out when iOS 4.3 becomes available.

What is unclear is if the 3GS and 3G will also support this functionality and if this is the case what happens to a carrier's MiFi business when you can pick up a cheap iPhone which blends a smartphone and personal AP in one?

Cloud-Based Brute Force Attacks to Test Computer Security

January 11, 2011

Love it or hate it, the cloud is allowing some incredible things to take place such as being able to offer anyone the power of a supercomputer for pricing in line with a cup of coffee. Barry Levine writes about how a researcher was able to tap into the massive power of the Amazon EC2 cloud to break WiFi passwords at just $2 a pop.

So many passwords are susceptible to brute force attacks where a dictionary is used to generate passwords until it finds one which is correct. This is why some login screens have a CAPTCHA code requirement where a human needs to determine what the code is.

Are Pay-TV Companies Suicidal?

January 10, 2011

I don’t mean to sound an alarm bell but run for the doors – if you are a cable company or telco, just what the heck are you thinking?

Let me lay out the facts. Kodak is a shell of its former self as is Tower Records which went through bankruptcy. And in each case the move to digital distribution gave consumers alternatives which were either lower cost, more convenient or both.

Groupon May be Bad for Business Health

January 10, 2011

If you found a way to attract the least valuable customers - those who will yield the lowest margin and simultaneously ensure they won't come back to pay retail because they will soon see a great deal from your competitors, are you helping or hurting your business?

That's the up to $7.8 billion dollar question and according to Bob Phibbs who bills himself as the Retail Doctor, Groupon is actually hurting the small businesses it is supposed to be helping.

If Phibbs is correct, the online coupon market may be in a huge bubble. It is more likely that for companies with quality products and services, the exposure to new customers will help their businesses over time. But there are reasons for SMBs to proceed with caution.

Read Before Switching to Verizon for iPhone

January 10, 2011

Verizon is widely rumored to be releasing the iPhone tomorrow and so many have waited so long for the moment they can either give up an existing device on Verizon’s network or switch from AT&T or other carriers. There are a few things to ponder before switching – such as will the new iPhone support GSM, allowing users to travel outside the country and use their phones. My guess is yes – it will likely be a “world phone.”

Moreover, will the device be the same as what AT&T users get or be upgraded somehow with a new designation?

Behold the Anticloud - Lapdoc is Born

January 7, 2011

Are Lapdocs the Future or Palm Foleo 2.0?

In May of 2007 Palm introduced the Foleo to a stunned public wondering why the need a device whose only purpose is to sync with their smartphone. Priced similar to a laptop – and with a similar form factor, the Foleo had only a fraction of the functionality and needed a separate device to be truly useful. I immediately explained I had no idea what the need for the gadget was.

Apple Walled Garden Grows

January 7, 2011

While you have to admire the absolute genius the Apple iTunes App Store and its potential to rake in $2B in revenue this year, the success of the store is the worst thing in the world for those who enjoy the ability to purchase software in an uncensored fashion. Although it’s eased, Apple retains tight control over the applications which are allowed to run on the company’s iDevices and now the computing industry is following suit with Android, RIM and Microsoft stores.

There are profound benefits to having a central authority manage apps which are available on a platform such as ensuring applications aren’t acting in a malicious manner or breaking privacy rules.

Did Skype Just Kill Cisco's UMI Telepresence?

January 5, 2011

Let’s start with the positives. I like the Cisco Umi television ad campaign and the fact the company has kiosks in Malls across the country demonstrating the service is a great idea. However, a paid service which basically brings enhanced Skype functionality is a really tough sell to me and when there are so many other things to buy with your consumer electronics dollar such as the Microsoft Xbox Kinect and tablets galore, will the typical family opt for personal telepresence so they can see grandma a bit better than they can with Skype?

In October I detailed ten reasons why Cisco’s Umi will fail and now we have reason number 11.

SIP and HTML5 Convergence: Are You Ready?

January 5, 2011

Carl Ford is the loveable guy in the IP communications space I used to compete with but we are now family. It is really a great partnership and his company, Crossfire Media has partnered with TMC on a number of events including SIP Tutorial which has been held three times and has educated companies of all sizes, major telcos and technical staffs working at prestigious Ivy League schools.

The next event will be collocated with ITEXPO East 2011 in Miami this February 2-4 and I asked Carl for a few reasons to attend and macro trends which will be discussed.

He mentioned recent SIP meetings in China which show the need to keep current on SIP standards and HTML5 in particular which will integrate with SIP in the future.

Communications Veteran Tom Evslin on Government Inefficiency

January 5, 2011

i

It was great to turn on TV and see Tom Evslin the VoIP and telecom visionary and veteran talking about how much waste there is in government and how much of our tax dollars were wasted in stimulus bills which purchased solar cells made in China. Obviously I was happy to see Tom, not hear the message.

The interview was based on an article Tom wrote titled Confessions of a State Stimulus Czar. It is worth pointing out that the piece gives insight into government incompetence I rail about frequently. And yet people say the government should spend and do more.

Microsoft Tablet Expensive but does Flash

January 5, 2011

Microsoft, the company which invented the tablet – Tablet PC just under a decade ago has a long way to go before they understand how to become an important player in the tablet space of today. In short order, the market has become one which is price sensitive – iPads start in fact at under $500.

Yet when Asus rolled out its tablet strategy with three Android units and one based on Windows 7, the latter device was priced at more than twice the average of the Android gadgets. So you can buy an Asus Tablet for $399 or $499 or pick up a Windows unit for $999.

Incredible New Content at ITEXPO East 2011 Next Month

January 5, 2011

If you haven’t checked out the ITEXPO home page in a while please do so because the show evolves as rapidly as the markets do with relevant quality content being added constantly. There is virtually no part of the tech market which will help you and your company that is not covered from multiple angles.

For example VI-Peering focuses on the IP peering space, the Business Video Expo focuses on the increased use of video by companies and Super WiFi Summit focuses on how white spaces could absolutely revolutionize the way broadband access is delivered via the disruptive use of radio frequency white spaces which are open and free.

Another addition is Telecom One-on-One powered by DealCenter and taking place Tuesday, Feb 1st, 2011 from 2-5 PM.

Facebook Worth $50B, Where is your Social CRM Strategy?

January 4, 2011

Look, I don’t know if Facebook is worth $50 billion but I can tell you with its massive momentum acceleration in users and page views, advertising revenue will continue to grow at a geometric rate. The company has about two billion dollars in sales right now and is barely scratching the surface in terms of the additional paid services it could potentially offer. An app store for example could bring in massive revenue and as local advertising is integrated into the mix, the value of the page views will increase dramatically.

It is easy to see the company will be reinvesting in its platform making Facebook even more sticky and as it does so, social media becomes that much more important to all companies because simply stated, this is were your customers live.

What The Peep (Wireless) is Going On?

January 4, 2011

A company which claims to do the impossible. What can’t this thing do?

I love to hear aggressive new companies break onto the scene full on huge ambitions but the recent news that Peep Wireless will be able to take a smartphone or telematics-based bluetooth system and use software to recreate the PSTN has me baffled just a bit. OK, baffled a lot.

Sears Goes High Tech With Video Streaming

January 4, 2011

One imagines the person above represents the typical Sears customer... Will this news lure the person below?

As reported by Gary Kim on TMCnet, Sears is now launching a new streaming video service under its Alphaline brand which is expected to provide a full line of consumer electronic products.Unlike subscription based competitors you do not need any sort of long-term commitment to use the service which prices new releases frequently at $3.99 per rental while TV episodes are priced at $1.99 per rental.

Facebook Now Worth $50 Billion, Does Deal with Goldman Sachs

January 3, 2011

Facebook has done a deal with Goldman Sachs to set up a special purpose vehicle or SPV which will allow the company to get around the limitation on the number of investors it can have. Currently limited to 499, Goldman Sachs will work with the world’s leading social network to get around this limitation and allow Goldman’s high net worth investors to get a piece of the company before it is publicly traded.

It is rumored that 2012 is the year Facebook is considering going public and at its ever-expanding valuation it seems virtually impossible that any company would be big enough to acquire them.

It should be noted the SEC requires as part of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 that companies with more than 499 investors disclose their financial results to the public and the commission may not look favorably on this deal.
