Leaked RIM Letter: Apple Nailing us, Our Apps Suck

A leaked letter from a RIM worker discusses how the company is getting beat by Apple and how its apps are sub-par. Suggestions on how the company can improve include focusing on the user experiance, recruiting senior software leaders and enable them to make critical decisions. Moreover the suggestions include cutting projects to the bone - focus more on end-users and less on carriers. The video below was used as reference.



The letter goes on to say to say there needs to be more marketing to drive consumer demand and Canadians are too nice - get rid of the dead wood and non-performers.



The Real Story on Grasshopper Phone Service

Earlier this month I wrote about a service from Grasshoper called Spreadable which was shut down by the company. Unlike most companies which shut down a division or brand, Grasshopper decided to write a four-part series on why they did it. Anyone else would have tried to kill the news. I called the company either marketing geniuses or marketing morons - mentioning that they did get me to write about the story and give them some extra publicity.

Since then I have had time to speak with the company - specifically the company's Ambassador of Buzz Stephanie Bullis who gave me many answers to the questions I had and more.

Spreadable was shut down without being sold because the company decided it could devote its resources more effectively to Grasshopper than Spreadable - the social sharing/referral/marketing company.



Cisco Cius and the Need for an Enterprise Tablet

Yesterday I spent some time with Cisco learning about the new Cius tablet focused on the business market. The company has done its best to make this device a no-brainer purchase for companies already knee-deep in Cisco hardware and software solutions and moreover it has really thought through what the enterprise needs in a tablet. With a huge focus on security, hardware-accelerated encryption and even customizable app stores by company, the potential for this tablet is great.

For example with APPHQ, Cisco’s app store, employees can only download apps which are allowed by an organization.




China Repeals Trade Rule Favoring Local Companies

In order to get into Chinese markets companies have to partner with a Chinese firm which in effect means partnering with the Chinese government. In many cases this means signing over your technology as well. But companies look at the Chinese market with over a billion consumers with rising incomes and say the risk is worth it as the market is so vast.

The challenge is many companies have seen Chinese sales far smaller than their expectations. This is in part because it isn't easy to market in the country and also because the Chinese have had trade rules in place favoring local suppliers.

Thankfully, China repealed its technology trade rule favoring local companies meaning there should be more opportunity for outside companies selling into the country.



How Cisco Needs to Sell the Cius Tablet

I'm on my way to New York to visit with Cisco and learn about the new Cius business tablet. The opportunity for Cisco here is huge as if it is able to sell large volumes of these devices, they can then more easily tie-in sales of their other products and services.

The Cius could be one of the most important Cisco launches since the company got into the IP communications space in the late nineties.

The downside risk is fairly obvious though and that is that software is cheaper than hardware and most anything the Cius can do, an iPad or other Android tablet can as well.

And then there is the consumer electronics angle - Cisco purchased Flip and shut it down a few years later because the company isn't very good at competing in the consumer space where margins are razor-thin. Obviously the growth of smartphones helped kill the pocket-sized video camcorder market as well.

So for Cisco the obvious sales angle is to sell the Cius as an IP-phone which can do so much more. Avaya will obviously be doing the same with its A175 tablet.









Sprint Tries Desperately to Block AT&T, T-Mobile USA Merger

At a time when wireless broadband is becoming so important to US consumers and businesses, how can it make sense to have less choice in the market? Moreover, as carriers shift from all-you-can-eat pricing to a tiered system, isn't it obvious that wireless charges for consumers are going to skyrocket?

These are some of the arguments opponents to the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile USA are making but AT&T spends so much on lobbying and is so well-connected, they seem to be close to getting their deal done.

The situation for Sprint is so dire, the company's CEO Dan Hesse is doing virtually anything he can to prove the deal is bad for consumers. This includes an 18-state push and tripling of the time he spends in front of Congress and regulatory bodies.

Generally any action has positives and negatives associated with it and Hesse has to prove that on balance, AT&T will either provide inferior service or higher prices as a result of this merger.

Certainly the momentum is on the side of AT&T and not Sprint but the government does need to sign off on this deal and if he can find enough sympathetic listeners he may be able to kill this deal or at least make AT&T have to give up some very painful items to get it done.

Speed Freak: Alcatel-Lucent FPE 400 Gbps Network Processor

Alcatel-Lucent has just released the world's fastest network processor the FPE at 400 Gbps which uses half the power and ups transmission speed by a factor of four meaning service providers now have the ability to provide faster connections to customers at lower energy costs. Moreover, density levels have increased substantially as a result of this news meaning as long as heat dissipation is not an issue, you should be able to jam more bit processing technology per cubic centimeter of data center.

The processor will be available in 2012 as part of ALU’s IP routing portfolio and to give some perspective, a single FP3 processor could handle 70,000 simultaneous high definition video streams or 8.4 million simultaneous retail cloud sessions.

Moreover with such a boost in processing power, carriers will be in a better position to manage their network traffic allowing more reliable traffic optimization - which will in many cases be something carriers will charge for.

In addition, carriers will now have the ability to more easily experiment with new services as they will potentially have spare horsepower in their network equipment. I say potentially because with the growth of traffic on fixed and mobile networks, not to mention the advent of 4G/LTE roll-outs, service providers will have their hands full just keeping up with all the additional traffic on their networks.

So in the war between users who demand ever-more bandwidth and carrier equipment companies who are trying to supply the tech to allow carriers to serve data at adequate speeds, score one for the equipment company. Way to go Alcatel-Lucent...







Swiffy From Google: Convert Flash to HTML5

Slowly but surely the tools to enable Flash animations to become HTML5 are being introduced and as they become more refined, it will be far easier for developers familiar with SWF files to figure their way around HTML5. Google recently announced Swiffy as part of Google Labs - a cloud-based converter which uses a compact JSON representation of the animation, which is rendered using SVG and a bit of HTML5 and CSS3. ActionScript 2.0 is also present in the JSON object, and is interpreted in JavaScript in the browser. The company says the result are files which are almost as compact as the original SWF files.

I’ve been fairly consistent in saying that video conferencing would take off when mobile devices became powerful enough to allow users to show their surroundings on the go. Amusement parks in particular seemed like an obvious place where video conferencing would be of use. This has been my feeling since around 2002 and it’s been great to see the industry get to a point where a smartphone is as powerful as a laptop of just a few years earlier and virtually everyone with a smartphone or tablet has Skyped on the go by now.

Michael Tribolet is a true IP communications veteran and was the Vice President of Operations at Dialpad - a VoIP leader in the nineties. He then went to Vonage America and became President. He also worked at Managing Director and CEO of ACN Europe BV - a company with 1,500 employees.

I have known Mike for years and its good to see him back in the VoIP space where he has been part of so many important companies which shaped the market.

Where Google is Vulnerable to the FTC Probe

Google has responded to the FTC probe regarding its potential monopolist practice of directing users to its network of sites and in a blog post from Amit Singhal, a Google fellow they explain that their focus is primarily on users. A salient excerpt follows:

I realize most of you come to my blog for tech and communications news but I have a passion for many other things such as cars, science, nutrition, excercise and more. So occasionally I share some news which may not generally belong in my tech blog. But only when its really worth it.

This article from Wired about why the body likes the taste of protein discusses how scientists have been able to prove via mutated mice that your body not only responds to taste via your tongue's sensations but also via your digestive system which rewards the body when it eats foods which have a dense caloric profile.

In other words, mice have been shown to prefer water with certain protein in it as well as sugar - even though they can't actually taste either.

One of the commenters, pjs_boston had something interesting to add as well:

It is not surprising that rats prefer sugar water to unsweetened water, even when they can't taste sweet.  After all, eating sugar in that absence other food compounds results in rapid absorption of the sugar and a corresponding sugar high.

New Google Antitrust Probe and the Obama Connection

I asked in January of 2009 if Eric Schmidt was intentionally cozying up to candidate and then president Obama to protect a Google monopoly. The same year I brought the question up again as a response to an article in the Chicago Tribune on the matter.

We may or may not ever find out if my theory on this relationship are accurate what we do know is that today the FTC has served Google with civil subpoenas related to how the search engine directs searchers to its own growing network of sites like YouTube, shopping, local, and numerous others.

There is absolutely no question Google is massively powerful and can destroy companies and industries by directing users to its services. There is no way the company can deny this. The interesting arguments we will likely hear as a result of this case are whether Google is a force of good or bad in the market.



Now You Need to be a Lawyer to Understand Tech?

It seemed to start off slowly but now the trend is gaining momentum - lawsuits over patents in tech are everywhere and its tough to make decisions which are best for your company when you aren't sure if the products and services you are purchasing are infringing on the patents of others.

I must say that when the number of stories of tech patents gets to the dizzying level we are seeing today, it isn't good for anyone. Well except lawyers of course. Sure it is great to protect peoples' inventions but at the same time there are some very silly patents out there which are being used to "extort" money out of companies who have successfully put together a suite of products and services consumers want.

One can’t help but wonder if the opportunity currently exists for hackers to find loopholes in the security of publicly traded companies only to short the stock and then exploit the loophole and do tremendous damage to the company in question. You can’t help but come to such a conclusion when you read about how investors are weighing at least in part – the data breach when sending Sony’s shares lower.

In May a CNBC headline read: Sony CEO Apologizes for Internet Breaches; Shares Fall and today the Wall Street Journal had a piece titled Sony Investors Skeptical, Sending Shares Down which does make the connection between the breach and the below average share price performance compared to other Japanese companies.

Just yesterday I discussed in an article about Cisco Quad that it is very hard it is to determine who the leaders in tech will be in the future. And today when I learned that Cablevision added e-mail opt-in for its television advertisers, I got to thinking about how this will change the world for companies like Groupon, Yahoo! and Google.

The way the system works is a Cablevision IO TV customer could decide they want to join an e-mail list of an advertiser to receive selected coupons and offers. A screen overlay is presented on the program they are viewing until the transaction is complete.

Last week I took a train into the city from TMC’s Connecticut HQ to spend time with the Cisco Quad collaboration team – using Cisco telepresence technology and it was a fascinating look into the company’s foray into a post-email, collaborative enterprise world. First things first, I wrote about Quad and spoke with Murali Sitaram VP/GM of Cisco's Enterprise Platforms unit last September and since then Quad has not been talked about much in the media and has limited buzz in the market. Moreover, Cisco is repositioning itself – lightening up on consumer products meaning much of the company’s messaging has been in other areas of the market including launching consumer telepresence product UMI – something which should never should have gotten the green light.

Facebook declares war on Apple: Its only Thursday and this week has been a huge one so far with regards to HTML5 – with Facebook looking like it will have a new HTML5 app which bypasses the Apple App Store. Is it in fact “declaring war?” I am not sure but after the recent news from Microsoft relating to HTML5 – the trend in the market is clear.

HTML5 Video on Set Top Boxes: Then there is the news that ActiveVideo’s new CloudTV platform will have HTML5 support as well. How soon till we can watch all TV on any browser which supports the newest HTML variant?

Somehow when Jabra sent me their new Freeway car speakerphone it came to my house instead of my office and when I opened the box I thought ho-hum – a speakerphone and unceremoniously placed it in the pile of mail which may or may not get looked at. But today I brought it to work and became thoroughly impressed with its features. Virtual surround sound, HD voice support, A2DP music streaming support, voice guidance for Caller-ID, intelligent speech recognition, motion sensing to conserve battery, 3 speakers, support for two simultaneous devices and that sound – oh that sound, you think the device must be much bigger than it is.

In August of last year I explained why there are so few jobs – in part the problem revolves around demonizing the successful by our politicians and in-part because of excessive taxation. Part of the support for my post was an opinion piece from Michael Fleischer of Bogen Communications – a company in the telecom space I have followed for over a decade-and-a-half. Some of you may think Fleischer is complaining too much and he needs to give back more of the money he earns to be fair – but you should know that in New Jersey he has to pay $74,000 so a worker can take home $44,000.  He doesn’t mention this but I will – if he then is lucky enough to make profit he could pay 50-60+% of that money back out to the government through federal and state tax as well as various fees – real estate taxes, regulatory compliance, etc.

This week Fleischer was on Fox Business and isn’t any happier with the state of the US economy and has nothing for venom to spew at politicians who make it more difficult for his company to succeed.

Microsoft Embraces HTML5 and Developers Are Scared

Recently Microsoft came out with the news that new Windows 8 immersive applications will be coded with HTML5 and JavaScript and this has sent a shock-wave through the company's developer community as the various programming languages they are used to seem to have been obsoleted overnight.

ZDnet's Mary Jo Foley said she has it on good authority that Silverlight will continue to be supported as well but the forums are awash in fear, uncertainty and doubt.

There are two ways of looking at this news - Microsoft hasn't had a chance to explain in full its future path for developers and in-time coders will learn that they aren't coding dinosaurs as some bridge technologies will ensure their skill-set is still useful.



Personally I believe that Microsoft isn't going to abandon .NET, WPF and other development platforms. But this doesn't mean this news isn't huge.

What Microsoft is telling developers is HTML5 and JavaScript are the future of web programming. This isn't exactly news to many of us but coming from Microsoft at this early a stage, the news is frankly surprising.

But then again when you realize just how much catching up the company has to do in the tablet and smartphone space, the HTML5 move is the only one which makes sense.

And herein lies the opportunity - HTML5 runs everywhere and as we saw from the recent Financial Times app, it has virtually no limitations compared to native code and as a bonus requires no app store gatekeeper to approve it.

For programmers everywhere - if you aren't learning HTML5 - you may come to work one day and realize you are a triceratops (hat tip to TMC president Dave Rodriguez whose line I just stole.)

This has me wondering if investors believe that some of the Apple magic which allows Cupertino to charge more for its products, in-part because its stores are busy will rub off on the retailer. Spreadable Shuts Down - Why?

While reading a blog post from telecom and channel partner thought leader Peter Radizeski, on how small businesses are responsible for much of the nation's hiring I learned about the fact that Grasshopper is shutting down its Spreadable company - an organization focused on word-of-mouth spreading of customer referrals.

I haven't talked with the people at Grasshooper in years - certainly not since they changed their name to Grasshopper - but I have often had conversations with others in the market about how their marketing campaigns seem to be the most untargeted in the space since much of it is being placed on satellite radio. According to the company's competitors, their marketing is as shotgun as it gets because - they seem to be purposefully utilizing mediums which are difficult to measure and they are relatively nonexistent online.

And as more decisions are being made on the web - this is quite a surprising and counter-intuitive strategy.

But when I started to read the first post from the company related to why they shut down Spreadable I could see they understand digital marketing quite well - its just surprising that you rarely see them online. Kind of a paradox I got to thinking. It is worth mentioning Spreadable too relied on Satellite radio among perhaps other mediums for its sales.

Another thought I had while reading is what company shuts down a business and then celebrates its failure in public via a four-part series?









Skype, the Carrier's Friend?

There are people who believe the Microsoft acquisition of Skype will make Redmond's relationship with carriers much worse but the leading internet telephony software company has been making steady progress wooing carriers. Years back at the CTIA show in Las Vegas, Chaim Haas, one of Skype's PR representatives told me the Three UK deal between his client and Skype was working out well for the carrier and moreover, the company was hoping other carriers would partner as well.

Then more recently Verizon Wireless struck a solid relationship with Skype and now, TMC's Paula Bernier breaks the story of how Canada's Telus too has partnered with Skype to among other things champion usage of the VoIP company's network and services.

Perhaps the Skype acquisition isn't all bad news for Microsoft's carrier relationships. In fact it may even do the opposite of what many pundits tell us - help Microsoft get more entrenched in carrier networks.

And certainly when you are the new underdog in the mobile world, any advantage like this one can come in handy when competing with Apple, RIM and Google.







HTML5 Shines on New FT App

According to Ed Silverstein on TMCnet's sister site TechZone360, The Financial Times recently released a web app at app.ft.com based on HTML5 and in doing so has shown the Splinternet may be reversing course. As you may recall, I coined the term Splinternet in 2008 to describe the splintering of app environments on the web. Programmers currently utilize so much overhead to program for various environments that they take precious resources from differentiating their apps. The scenario is reminiscent of the hundreds or thousands of printer drivers developers had to provide with their software before Windows became popular and handled this task for the development community.

CradlePoint Wireless N 4G CTR35 Impresses

CTO and founder of CradlePoint Gary Oliverio just sent me the company's CTR35 - wireless N portable router allowing you to plug in a USB dongle and light up a room with WiFi - where up to 16 devices can share a wireless broadband connection. And the great news is this gadget can now share a 4G connection.

I tested it with a Verizon 3G EVDO card and was able to achieve average download speeds of 1.9 Mbps downloads and 500 kbps uploads which is respectable considering I did the tests from TMC's HQ where 3G coverage isn't generally super-strong.

The router supports devices from AT&T, Bell Canada, Clearwire,
icket, Rogers, Rover, Sprint, T-Mobile, Telus, US Cellular, Verizon Wireless (Alltel), & Virgin Mobile and claims its range is about 350 feet - for WiFi. I did test the range inside of TMC's headquarters and got to about 100 feet of dense metal and electronics and found the signal started to drop dramatically. This is in line with all other WiFi APs I have seen - more or less so I would say the range of this device is comparable to any other generic AP out there and all this with a small size - about the same as two iPhones stacked. So basically - 350 feet of open air range is well within within reason based on my tests.

The device allows you to have dual SSIDs - in case you want to share a second one with guests and it has bulletproof installation - you plug it in and it works.

Microsoft is taking control of the companies allowed to sell its tablets and limiting the number according to the Wall Street Journal. There are two good reasons for Microsoft to change its traditional open system where everyone had a shot at becoming a hardware partner.

  1. It is imperative Microsoft get the tablet roll out right and they need to get involved early to ensure the partners with the best products get to market quickly with limited competition to ensure success.
  2. Microsoft is losing to Apple because in part its user interfaces and product designs are vastly inferior. I've mentioned the difference between using a clunky Dell laptop Vs. an iPad before. They need to take control of this problem and one hopes they will police more tightly the final tablet user experience with attention to detail commensurate with that of the iPad and its magnetic cover.


Mitel to Come Out Swinging, Will They Connect?

This past January I wrote a piece which compared Mitel to ShoreTel titled Is ShoreTel filling the Nortel Void and since the post Mitel has been in a state of flux with a new CEO Rich McBee recently joining. When the opportunity presented itself to come to the Mitel Business Partner Conference titled Mitel Freedom – in Florida, I jumped at it in order to get more perspective on Mitel’s strategic direction and future.

The conference officially kicks off tomorrow morning but I wanted to give my readers as much information as possible before things got going. Tonight I had a sashimi (no, the other one – without the rice) dinner with Ron Wellard, GM and EVP of Mitel Communications Solutions, Jim Davies the CTO and Jay Nichols the VP of Sterling Communications – the PR firm handling Mitel.
