The Case for Edge Computing gets Stronger as IIC and OpenFog Unite

February 20, 2019

Edge computing has a very bright future - it is absolutely inevitable.

If you are unconvinced, we invite you to read until the end.

For the sake of this post - we will use edge and fog computing interchangeably. This is becoming a less controversial position based on a recent exclusive interview with Chuck Byers, OpenFog CTO.

The OpenFog Consortium announced at an IoT Evolution Expo keynote in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last month, that their merger with the Industrial Internet Consortium or IIC was finalized. Both Carl Ford and Ken Briodagh with IoT Evolution have interesting insights on this merger, as does Matt Vasey, Chairman and President of OpenFog Consortium.

Suffice it to say, this combining of resources makes a great deal of sense as it helps the adoption of edge/fog computing. Here are some of the benefits and issues of fog-computing and OpenFog contributions.

Chuck discussed that apps should run in the cloud if possible but there are often impediments.

Pareteum on What iPass Merger Means

February 18, 2019

We told you last year Pareteum wants to let carriers and companies quickly integrate global mobile services. They abstract the communications companies and users need, allowing a focus on applications and services, not the underlying network.

To that end, last year, Pareteum procured a worldwide license to embed iPass technology as part of its connectivity strategy.

You may recall, in 2008 we were pretty impressed with how iPass helped create a communications skin first discussed by the head of Bell Labs. Specifically, they allowed a single login and password to access a network of global WiFi devices.

Now, the two companies are involved in M&A meaning the best of both companies can be harnessed by customers worldwide.

In an exclusive interview, CEO Vic Bozzo explained, Vic said, "Wireless is eating everything. Demand is growing and carriers can't keep up." He continued, "Pareteum provides flexible, elastic, cloud-based management of all of these streams of communications."

With iPass, they get a top-notch connectivity manager allowing customers to toggle easily between wireless and WiFi. In addition, they get access to 65 million global hotspots and over 500 Fortune 1,000 customers.

"Customers can now connect anywhere and everywhere," he exclaimed.

He went on to explain, companies are taking advantage of their open APIs to take advantage of more flexible communications and the smart-city space is beginning to heat up as a customer segment.

It's a great story with impressive synergies - a further abstraction of communications, allowing companies and developers to focus on solutions and apps, while ensuring connectivity is handled in the most efficient manner.

Cato Networks Proves Quality, Interops with RingCentral

February 13, 2019

The SD-WAN solution from Cato Networks has been certified as a connectivity partner by RingCentral and in recent testing has shown to achieve a MOS score of 3.8 or greater - even with 15 percent or more packet loss.

“Many enterprises are deploying SD-WAN, as a leading technology to assure highest-levels of quality of service and availability,” said Curtis Peterson, senior vice president, cloud operations, RingCentral. “As part of our partner certification process, we tested Cato’s ability to deliver high-quality voice even under extremely poor network conditions. We found that Cato was able to accommodate more than 15 percent packet loss and still maintain a high-level of voice quality, which is a significant achievement in providing superior customer experience.”

This is important as it gives potential customers a performance score which can be used when comparing vendors. In reality, the more networks powering an SD-WAN solution, the more packet loss and latency a well-designed SD-WAN solution can handle.

Cato Networks connects all branch locations and the mobile workforce into RingCentral datacenters with a global, secure, and optimized cloud-native network.

How Richard Sprague has Evolved Since ITEXPO

February 3, 2019

Many of you may remember Richard Sprague from ITEXPO. He was the Senior Director, Marketing for Microsoft Response Point - their small business phone system launched at the show. It was great working with him throughout 2009.

Richard moved on to focus more on the healthcare space after leaving Microsoft and more recently has been doing some fascinating things with his microbiome, meaning the entire community of microbes found in his body at any given time. A fascinating CNBC article about Rich details how he’s sent in hundreds of samples from his skin, nose and stool to various companies that claim to analyze the microbiome for insights about human health.

Here is an excerpt:

In 2014, he decided to do all he could to understand his body with these newly available tests.
