Nokia Says WiMAX is Wireless BetaMax

April 5, 2009

BetaMax is an interesting technology for Nokia to compare WiMAX to because both technologies end in the last three letters but does it go farther? After all, many will tell you BetaMax was superior to VHS in picture quality, tape wear, system design and convenience of use. Interestingly though LTE is a newer standard and borrowed many ideas from WiMAX and can be considered superior in a number of ways.

Most importantly though is device support. Mobile broadband is in extreme demand and gadgets like smartphones are more important than ever.

TMCnet for iPhone, Asia, Jobs, Cable, Satellite and More

April 15, 2009

As TMCnet has expanded I have to admit it is tough to keep track of all the sites we have which can help you in your job. To that end I decided to take a moment and list some of them which you may not be aware of. I thought this entry made sense as I have received some comments about how TMC should launch some of the sites listed below. This shows me there are just so many things we do that our 2-3 million unique visitors each month may not be aware of.

Interviewed by BusinessWeek About Cablevision Optimum WiFi

April 20, 2009

I was interviewed recently for an informative article in BusinessWeek regarding Cablevision's Optimum WiFi Service. By now I am sure you know I am a Cablevision Optimum WiFi fan and further feel WiFi is a powerful component of a service provider offering and can reduce churn.

Olga Kharif wrote the piece and did a great job integrating my comments with numerous salient points, facts and figures about the wireless and cable markets. Do all cable companies need to build out WiFi services across their areas of coverage?

What AT&T Earnings Tell us

April 22, 2009

AT&T just reported earnings and revenue (release) was down slightly - 0.6% or $30.57 billion. Most of the 1.2 million net new wireless customers purchased iPhones which shows just how dependant the company is on Apple for its wireless growth. And wireless is a crucial part of the business when you consider it reported a 12% increase in profit on a just under 9% revenue gain. The good news is churn held steady at 1.2% which in this environment.

But what analysts may have missed is the fact that the iPhone is the stickiest phone in the history of the wireless business because of the App Store which enables these devices to be powerful pocket computing devices which run a plethora of applications.

Will Some Wireless Carriers Be Forced to Promote Skype?

April 23, 2009

Recently I detailed how a single device - the iPhone changed the fortunes of AT&T Wireless. Every wireless carrier is looking for a way to have that one amazing gadget that drives traffic and reduces churn. But what if another way to achieve a similar goal is to enable free Skype calling on your network? It may sound stupid that I would suggest such a thing but Skype execs argue that you generate more revenue by Skype-enabling your wireless network than you do by blocking it.

Welcome Back Patrick Barnard

April 24, 2009

I would like to welcome back Patrick Barnard to the TMC editorial team. Patrick has covered a number of different editorial areas at TMC over the years and recently left TMC to work on Multichannel Merchant. He is now back and his return is just a continuing reinforcement of how TMC is continually investing in its editorial talent -- just as we are constantly evolving our web technology, graphics, analytics, reporting and more.

Thanks to influential readers like you TMC has been blessed with hundreds of advertisers and exhibitors each year who partner with TMC to grow -- even in the face of challenging economic conditions.

We take sponsor and reader loyalty seriously -- looking to constantly improve to provide you with the best products we can.

TMC Wishes Greg Galitzine a Fond Farewell

May 7, 2009

For nearly 13 years, Greg Galitzine has been a tremendously valuable part of the TMC team. His career started as an editor for CTI Magazine in 1996. Where he reported on the collision of the computer and communications spaces including what we called IP telephony back in the day. In 1997 we convened a meeting with Greg to explore whether it made sense to launch a publication in the IP telephony space.

Witness the 4G Wireless Evolution

July 8, 2009

One of the most exciting parts of my job is to explore new technologies with my readers and attendees at live events. By now you probably know TMC produces the 4GWE conference in partnership with Crossfire Media -- a company where Carl Ford is an integral part of building a number of communications communities. If you aren't aware of Carl, he is a thought-leader in the telecom space having spent years developing leading edge content as part of the VON events of years past.

The first 4GWE event we produced drew hundreds of attendees from around the globe and was extremely successful. We have collaborated and improved th conference quite a bit and in addition we have added a number of great new media partners and sponsors.

How to Sell Communications Products This Fall

July 10, 2009

I know we are in a recession and everything is supposed to be gloom and doom, etc. but please indulge me as I remind many of you just how important it is in these tough times to get new customers.

It is for this reason I feel compelled to remind you ITEXPO has become the world's communications conference - the place you need to go to find new products and services. As a result, vendors/exhibitors were thrilled with ITEXPO in Miami this past January.
