TMC Editorial Open House August 12th

July 19, 2010

Last week I was fortunate enough to head out to San Jose and shoot video interviews with over 100 companies who are the heart and soul of Silicon Valley. For me, it was energizing and refreshing - like consuming vials of energy boosting supplements in rapid succession. In addition, some of my editorial editorial team came with me to meet and greet as well as network with the many companies who make up the various tech markets the TMCnet audience cares about.

AT&T Churn Rate Insanely Low

July 17, 2010

Gary Kim does a great job explaining in an articlethat Customers will put up with a a lot of imperfection in service quality as evidenced by the 1% churn rate of AT&T versus the industry average of 3%. One wonders however if this staggering low rate isn't just consumers not wanting to give up their iPhones. Kim also mentions Verizon in his post and I agree that the real test comes when the iPhone gets offered on this network - if ever. My experience has shown that around 50% of AT&T users would switch to Verizon based on casual conversations. The impact of so many millions of customers switching carriers would obviously mean the burden of supporting all this wireless data will switch from one carrier to another quite quickly. This brings us back to AT&T who has a limited amount of time to improve it's network before it has to deal with real competition from the Verizon iPhone, Droid X or new Blackberry device said to be yet another iPhone killer.

5 Minutes With Motorola Droid X show the wonders of the Android ecosystem

I spent five minutes with a Motorola Droid X because the editor who has it here at TMC HQ literally will not let it out of her sight. What this told me right away about the device is that it is special.

TMC editors in San Jose Next Week

July 8, 2010

Next Week, my team and I will be hosting meetings in San Jose where the technology and communications markets will have unprecedented access to TMC editors and the ability to tell their story in TMC's video newsroom. Since I blogged about the opportunity a while back we have already scheduled over 60 meetings. We are subsequently flying more of our team out to the west coast to handle the meetings. The good news is there is still some more space left for meetings now that we have decided to send more resources cross-country from our headquarters in Connecticut.

Moreoever, this event now has networking potential meaning you will not only meet editors but others in the industry.

Invitation Only Video Interviews in San Jose with TMC

June 29, 2010

OK - it is kind of weird to call it "invitation only" if I am blogging about it but somehow it doesn't seem right to not let you know that TMC will be on-hand in Silicon Valley performing a host of video interviews with the best and brightest minds in tech and communications at the San Jose Marriott Tues, JULY 13th - Thurs, JULY 15th.

A sample screen shot of an interview which took place just outside of Washington DC

Here is a link to the most recent interviews I posted from a similar trip to the Washington DC area. If you are interested in consideration be sure to reach out immediately to Jaime Hernaez (jhernaez (at) tmcnet.com).

Since word got out about these interviews the spots have been filling up faster than in any city we have gone to so please be aware we expect all spots to fill up soon.

Vantrix CMO Gives Thoughts on Wireless Data Caps

June 22, 2010

I have mentioned before that even if you feel your data usage will never exceed 2GB, you are likely underestimating your broadband needs of the next few years. This is without a doubt the case as you start to stream video from your device on a more regular basis. If you look at the evolution of social sharing, it began with words, migrated to photos then videos and now streaming. Even though we are at the very very early moments of the live video streaming revolution, one of the companies in the market - Ustream already has a website ranking in the top 450 in the world according to Alexa (lower numbers are better and sites like Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Twitter occupy some of the top spots).

DashPad App Store Alternative to Get Weather Widget

June 16, 2010

Recently I wrote about the DashPad environment from PXL Creations which allows iPad users to utilize Safari instead of the App Store to install widgets which multitask and allow you access to a bunch of tools like a calculator, notepad, calendar, searching in Google, the Yellow Pages and more. One request I made in a post on the matter was I hope that a weather widget would come soon. It seems the company will oblige me as I heard word late last night from company president Charles Carver that the weather widget is next to be released - along with performance improvements.

If you are a widget lover and have an iPad, $10 will get you access to a wonderful alternative to the Apple App Store.

TMC Gets Written up in Norwalk Hour Newspaper

June 4, 2010

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said.

FCC Exceptionalism and Supremacy?

June 2, 2010

A guest post worth reading from Scott Cleland, Founder & President, Precursor, LLC:

Read it on Precursorblog.com

Often stepping back to gain perspective, and to try and see the forest for the trees can be highly instructive. However, if one steps back to see the big picture of how this FCC is attempting, unilaterally, to change U.S. Internet policy, the view is surreal.
