Moreover, these updates used to be delivered during software maintenance upgrades.

PCM Enhances Collaboration Portfolio

March 18, 2019

PCM is the 2.3 billion dollar a year organization you may not have heard of. They were once PC Mall – remember those catalogs we all used to get? Actually, remember catalogs?

About four years ago they spun out professional and consultative practices focusing on security, hybrid data center, Microsoft and more recently, collaboration.

Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling 2 Follows the Active Speaker's Voice

March 17, 2019

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges to collaboration sessions is handling the one or more speakers who are mobile during a meeting, drawing on the board or whatever they happen to be doing.

Meetings are tough enough with poor cellular and VoIP connections, having substandard equipment at the endpoints only makes things worse.

The new Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling 2 automatically focuses on the active speaker within a room. Integration of the ceiling microphone is easy and straightforward thanks to redundant Dante ports, Power over Ethernet, compatibility with the Sennheiser Control Cockpit app and an open media control protocol.

This is the company's flagship A/V conferencing solution, employing the company’s patented automatic, adaptive beamforming technology — which follows the active speaker wherever he or she moves in the room.

Beamforming is also used in advanced WiFi access points and will be a huge part of 5G networks when they finally deploy.

TeamConnect Ceiling 2, which is available from April 15th 2019, can be used together with existing analog conference systems or integrated into fully digital systems, where it can also be controlled and monitored via the IP network.

A Foldable Phone More Than $1,500 is Just Stupid

March 5, 2019

It brings tears to our eyes, but we really don't need a foldable phone. We were blown away by Samsung's entry into the space, the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X with its even larger screens blew us away again (below).

There seems to be great concern about the durability of these new plastic, foldable phones. Will they hold up to key scratches when they are in your pocket or purse? Will there eventually be a line or crease where the fold is, distracting from the user experience?

StaffAlerter Adds Personal Alerting Device for Enhanced Safety

March 4, 2019

Instant communication is becoming more important in business, schools, municipalities and the federal government. After 9/11 this became more apparent than ever and school shootings and other emergencies have only reinforced the need.

Yet most schools and cities haven't solved the problem. Why? Perhaps because they don't know what company to turn to.

Layoffs at Telit, an Annual Event?

February 28, 2019

Sources tell us IoT company Telit has laid off 38 people. We have reached out to the company for details and did not immediately hear back. One person affected by the layoffs says this move has affected morale within the organization - obviously, not for the better.

This seems to be an annual event as last year, around the exact same time the company laid off 100 people in India and the U.S.

This news should not have any effect on the real or perceived growth of the IoT space.

IoT Evolution took place earlier this month in Fort Lauderdale, FL. and the optimism level on the show floor and in conferences was very high.

The Case for Edge Computing gets Stronger as IIC and OpenFog Unite

February 20, 2019

Edge computing has a very bright future - it is absolutely inevitable.

If you are unconvinced, we invite you to read until the end.

For the sake of this post - we will use edge and fog computing interchangeably. This is becoming a less controversial position based on a recent exclusive interview with Chuck Byers, OpenFog CTO.

The OpenFog Consortium announced at an IoT Evolution Expo keynote in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last month, that their merger with the Industrial Internet Consortium or IIC was finalized. Both Carl Ford and Ken Briodagh with IoT Evolution have interesting insights on this merger, as does Matt Vasey, Chairman and President of OpenFog Consortium.

Suffice it to say, this combining of resources makes a great deal of sense as it helps the adoption of edge/fog computing. Here are some of the benefits and issues of fog-computing and OpenFog contributions.

Latency

Chuck discussed that apps should run in the cloud if possible but there are often impediments.

Pareteum on What iPass Merger Means

February 18, 2019

We told you last year Pareteum wants to let carriers and companies quickly integrate global mobile services. They abstract the communications companies and users need, allowing a focus on applications and services, not the underlying network.

To that end, last year, Pareteum procured a worldwide license to embed iPass technology as part of its connectivity strategy.

You may recall, in 2008 we were pretty impressed with how iPass helped create a communications skin first discussed by the head of Bell Labs. Specifically, they allowed a single login and password to access a network of global WiFi devices.

Now, the two companies are involved in M&A meaning the best of both companies can be harnessed by customers worldwide.

In an exclusive interview, CEO Vic Bozzo explained, Vic said, "Wireless is eating everything. Demand is growing and carriers can't keep up." He continued, "Pareteum provides flexible, elastic, cloud-based management of all of these streams of communications."

Our most recent video interview with Vic Bozzo

With iPass, they get a top-notch connectivity manager allowing customers to toggle easily between wireless and WiFi. In addition, they get access to 65 million global hotspots and over 500 Fortune 1,000 customers.

"Customers can now connect anywhere and everywhere," he exclaimed.

He went on to explain, companies are taking advantage of their open APIs to take advantage of more flexible communications and the smart-city space is beginning to heat up as a customer segment.

It's a great story with impressive synergies - a further abstraction of communications, allowing companies and developers to focus on solutions and apps, while ensuring connectivity is handled in the most efficient manner.
