10 Seismic Communications Trends Creating Billions in New Value

March 20, 2017

People need not apply in our brave new communications future

Communications was once a person-to-person mechanism allowing individuals to collaborate or share information with others. The move from traditional phone networks to VoIP, from wired to wireless, from voice to chat all involved two or more people at the ends of conversations.

The next wave however will represent the largest shift in our lifetimes - the most important communications innovations in the next decade will transcend people.

Greenfield Tech Has big news @ITEXPO

February 7, 2017

Greenfield Tech had a skew of news at ITEXPO 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Eric Klein and Nir Simionovich explained how the company has evolved their Cloudonix platform to be a Swiss Army Knife for telecom, consisting of media services, subscriber services and a SIP registrar layer.

One of the more interesting features is a backend cloud service and secure mobile SDK providing an end-to-end encrypted solution allowing companies to have secure conversations with customers. The idea is the communications within an app to a call center can be far more secure than the system we use today which has a number of issues.

For example, when a caller calls for help, their is no way to know for sure the caller is really who you might think as it is fairly easy to get access to personally identifiable information like social security numbers and maiden names, etc. Likewise, when a bank calls a customer, there is no way to know for sure it is the bank calling.

The Deskphone Market... it's Alive; it's Alive!

January 19, 2017

The deskphone market has been left for dead by many but there is still room in the space for the device to evolve and become become a more integral part of your UC strategy. The ideas is simple... What if your deskphone became a colleague of your mobile, allowing you to have the advantages of the deskphone and mobile while leveraging the best of each from the other.

It may sound complicated but in reality, the idea is to allow calls to flow in either direction while allowing you to remote into your deskphone from anywhere.

Allworx came by TMC HQ and showed their new phones off to us last week and we remain impressed.

Congrats to TMC Customer Phone.com

January 19, 2017

Hats off to Phone.com for big customer wins in 2016. The cloud communications company landed new partners and clients like StructuredWeb, Liftmaster and The City of Newark.  In addition to an expanding clientele, the product suite augmented with a new and improved API to aid in iOS and Android apps, as well as Web collaboration, video conferencing, call presence and the phone system in general.

Building on the momentum of 2016, this February, Phone.com will be well represented at the The Communications and Business Transformation event of the year, ITEXPO. VoIP pioneer Alon Cohen will be participating in the panel discussion, “Bringing Telecom Innovations to Market Faster with APIs,” and Joel Maloff Senior Vice President at Phone.com and industry veteran, is moderating several others.

In addition, Phone.com has been sponsoring the Virtual Office online community for many years (thanks!), allowing TMC to cover the news and happenings in the space and bring the UC, UCaaS and Hosted VoIP communities together online.

Embracing Change: The Shift from Making Products to Selling Value

When he was younger he started collecting baseball cards and eventually it became a business. At one point they tried a different angle - they blindfolded a kid and let him pick from a group of cards for 50 cents. They then realized if there were higher value cards, they could charge more.

Zang to Grow Communications PaaS offerings at All About the API

July 20, 2016

Here at the All About the API 2016 show in Las Vegas I got a chance to catch up with keynoter Davide Petramela to talk about Zang. The company is a division of Avaya focusing on Platform as a Service – it isn’t unlike Nexmo or Twilio but the difference may be the Avaya tie-in meaning, the company can draw on years of telecom heritage and experience.

In some ways, it may be closer to Kandy from GENBAND.

His keynote focused on Disrupting the Pace of Innovation where he said, "The next level of innovation in the digital economy is driven by the ability to embed communications right into cloud-based applications.” He continued, “Zang is on the forefront with dramatically simple tools and APIs that enable developers and designers to build their vision in a heartbeat."

API of the Week: Scribe Software Powers Integration

July 12, 2016

One of the biggest challenges developers have to deal with relate to managing all the programming interfaces from various systems and solutions. Getting sales and back office systems to communicate effectively with CRM and accounting are just a few of a challenges many organizations perpetually face. Another is getting the on-premise and cloud systems to communicate effectively – we are going to be in a hybrid world for some time after all.

Scribe Software is one of the companies looking to help developers make short work of these challenges.

With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.

All About the API: The One Developer Event You Need

May 19, 2016

OK, I am going to start off by taking back the headline of this post... There isn't one of anything you need. If you have a sports car, you likely also need an SUV so your kids cramped in the backseat don't end up with deformed legs. If you have an iPhone, you likely also want an Android or Microsoft tablet because there are just some things iOS doesn't do very well.

So let's see if we can rephrase, shall we?
