Strategic Technologies for 2008

October 11, 2007

I was reading an article on Wireless News regarding Gartner’s top 10 strategic technologies for 2008. Here are those technologies with the analysis from Wireless News. Obviously I agree with the first two items on this list and I do agree with a number of others here as well.   Here is the full article.   Green IT. The focus of Green IT that came to the forefront in 2007 will accelerate and expand in 2008. Consider potential regulations and have alternative plans for data center and capacity growth.

TMCnet Searches

October 5, 2007

I thought it would be interesting to see what people search on when they come to TMCnet. It should be noted these searches are on TMCnet proper which unfortunately at the moment does not include blogs.   These numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because if a search is embedded in a web link and that link is crawled repeatedly by search engine spiders you come up with a situation where numbers may be skewed. Be that as it may, it is worth sharing some of the information from the last month if for no other reason than as a diversion from more important pursuits such as doing your (and my) job.   1 Avaya No surprise here but shouldn’t Cisco be more popular based on company size and product portfolio? 2 Witness+Systmes I get the feeling this is one of those odd pages (with a typo by the way) that gets crawled repeatedly.

Verizon Voyager: iPhone Killer?

October 3, 2007

With all the hoopla surrounding the iPhone it is not surprising that Verizon Wireless is touting a suite of new phones and one – the LG Electronics Voyager is being touted as an iPhone killer. The device runs on the faster Verizon Wireless data network (Probably EVDO Rev. A) and has a keyboard. These are the two Achilles heels of the current iPhone. The device is similar to Apple’s phone in that it has a touch screen and web browser built-in.   So will this device be an iPhone killer?

Emerson buys Motorola ECC

September 29, 2007

Emerson recently picked up the embedded computing division from Motorola. This is a good move for Motorola as the company can put more of their focus on handsets and other core areas of their business. Right now Nokia and Apple are major threats and one less distraction always helps.   I am very impressed with the Motorola embedded team and the Emerson team (although I haven’t known this group for very long). Here is an article I wrote about Emerson Network Power a few months back.   I always felt the embedded team was lost at Motorola -- a small division with lots of potential that couldn’t get the corporate parent’s attention.   If Emerson can continue their increased branding and awareness and stronger PR push while not losing their technological edge and great engineering team, this acquisition will be good for all parties involved.

Blyke: Free Mobile Calling

September 25, 2007

I just can’t believe how much cheaper it gets over time to use communications services. When I was a teenager we paid somewhere around 25 cents per minute just to call one state away. Before we had fax machines we had to spend around ten dollars to get a document across the country. IP communications has changed all of this.   But things keep getting better and better in the telecom world.

Armani, Samsung, Google and Microsoft

September 24, 2007

I am traveling today – and most of this week in fact. As I get ready to go, there are a few stories that have caught my eye this morning and may be worth a read. The first is the collaboration between Armani and Samsung who together will design a credit card sized phone. Will this be an iPhone killer?

iPhones to Fail in Europe?

September 21, 2007

I have heard a number of analysts explain how the iPhone will face a tough sell in Europe and whenever I hear this news I wonder what substance the analysts may be ingesting to come up with such ludicrous ideas. If you haven’t encountered an iPhone yet, you will be blown away by it when you are.   At ITEXPO last week, IMS Forum President Michael Khalilian had his iPhone on a round table and everyone at the table wanted to see it and use it. This was at a communications show – I’ll grant you that. But I have seen this behavior duplicated at airports and train stations as well.   I have said before the lack of a real keyboard is a deal breaker for me personally.
