AT&T

AT&T Launches API Marketplace

March 18, 2019

The new AT&T API Marketplace provides prepackaged code to allow companies, ISVs and others to integrate more functionality into their apps and websites.

APIs include:

  • click-to-connect voice
  • video
  • text
  • 2-factor authentication

“Even the largest enterprises struggle with securing the time and resources needed to deploy capabilities that can enhance customer service and create personalized experiences,” says Roman Pacewicz, chief product officer, AT&T Business. “In today’s omnichannel communications environment, customers expect timely responses. By giving businesses a consistent experience and easy-to-use tools, we can help address common pain points efficiently and effectively.”

Built on Ribbon Communications’ Kandy platform, the AT&T API Marketplace offers turnkey applications and self-service APIs for developers to create custom applications.

Turnkey applications are plug-and-play communications services that can easily be incorporated into business applications and websites. Self-service APIs are available for customers who prefer to integrate these capabilities into their own environment.

A Foldable Phone More Than $1,500 is Just Stupid

March 5, 2019

It brings tears to our eyes, but we really don't need a foldable phone. We were blown away by Samsung's entry into the space, the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X with its even larger screens blew us away again (below).

There seems to be great concern about the durability of these new plastic, foldable phones. Will they hold up to key scratches when they are in your pocket or purse? Will there eventually be a line or crease where the fold is, distracting from the user experience?

The Case for Edge Computing gets Stronger as IIC and OpenFog Unite

February 20, 2019

Edge computing has a very bright future - it is absolutely inevitable.

If you are unconvinced, we invite you to read until the end.

For the sake of this post - we will use edge and fog computing interchangeably. This is becoming a less controversial position based on a recent exclusive interview with Chuck Byers, OpenFog CTO.

The OpenFog Consortium announced at an IoT Evolution Expo keynote in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last month, that their merger with the Industrial Internet Consortium or IIC was finalized. Both Carl Ford and Ken Briodagh with IoT Evolution have interesting insights on this merger, as does Matt Vasey, Chairman and President of OpenFog Consortium.

Suffice it to say, this combining of resources makes a great deal of sense as it helps the adoption of edge/fog computing. Here are some of the benefits and issues of fog-computing and OpenFog contributions.

Latency

Chuck discussed that apps should run in the cloud if possible but there are often impediments.

Pareteum on What iPass Merger Means

February 18, 2019

We told you last year Pareteum wants to let carriers and companies quickly integrate global mobile services. They abstract the communications companies and users need, allowing a focus on applications and services, not the underlying network.

To that end, last year, Pareteum procured a worldwide license to embed iPass technology as part of its connectivity strategy.

You may recall, in 2008 we were pretty impressed with how iPass helped create a communications skin first discussed by the head of Bell Labs. Specifically, they allowed a single login and password to access a network of global WiFi devices.

Now, the two companies are involved in M&A meaning the best of both companies can be harnessed by customers worldwide.

In an exclusive interview, CEO Vic Bozzo explained, Vic said, "Wireless is eating everything. Demand is growing and carriers can't keep up." He continued, "Pareteum provides flexible, elastic, cloud-based management of all of these streams of communications."

Our most recent video interview with Vic Bozzo

With iPass, they get a top-notch connectivity manager allowing customers to toggle easily between wireless and WiFi. In addition, they get access to 65 million global hotspots and over 500 Fortune 1,000 customers.

"Customers can now connect anywhere and everywhere," he exclaimed.

He went on to explain, companies are taking advantage of their open APIs to take advantage of more flexible communications and the smart-city space is beginning to heat up as a customer segment.

It's a great story with impressive synergies - a further abstraction of communications, allowing companies and developers to focus on solutions and apps, while ensuring connectivity is handled in the most efficient manner.

What's Big This Year in Telecom? Vote Now!

January 10, 2019

TMCnet and Andy Abramson and his company Comunicano are asking in the first annual VoIPWatch Poll.. The results will be revealed at this year’s ITEXPO in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, January 31 at 4:15 pm prior to the start of the always interesting IDEA Showcase.

For years Andy and his Comunicano team have been at the forefront of driving companies in the telecom industry to success. TMCnet and ITExpo have always been where the telecom, collaboration and communications infrastructure companies meet.

VoIPWatch, as one of the first, and now longest running blogs covering our industry, has always been where the community finds unfettered, and unfiltered insight, perspective and opinion. TMCnet is where the tech community discovers what’s new, what’s happening and goes to gather.

That’s why we’ve teamed up and are asking the community, what’s going to be the hot category in telecom in 2019.

The smartphone has become indispensable as a traveling companion. It's almost always better than whatever navigation and audio options which come with a vehicle. Even with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, there are lots of limitations.

This is why we typically use our phone for everything we can while driving. We like Waze - although occasionally Google Maps is needed for accuracy.

ITEXPO #SuperShow: The One Event Tech Buyers Should Attend Each Year

December 12, 2018

Time is limited and the only constant in tech is change.

In this environment, our challenge at TMC has been to evolve our conference ITEXPO, into a #SuperShow.

We hope you’ll make it Jan 30th-Feb 1st, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Simply stated, we have spent years, making ITEXPO (photos) the one place where purchasing decision-makers need to go to learn everything they need for the new year.

Interview with Serial Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Rehan Allahwala

November 19, 2018

If you have been to a TMC ITEXPO show in South Florida, you have no-doubt seen Rehan Allahwala at the DIDX booth or walking the show floor meeting people and posting selfies on his Facebook page. If you live in the middle-east, your life may have been touched by Rehan's numerous endeavors to make the world a better place.

As a serial entrepreneur and philanthropist in telecom and tech, we decided to interview Rehan to bring his unique and fascinating story to the world.

You are a serial tech entrepreneur from Pakistan – an area not known for tech, how did you do it?

I, personally, don’t think that Pakistan is not really known for tech. Maybe it´s not known by most because Pakistan has not really been marketed as a tech space.

Cloudonix Boosts its CPaaS Solution

November 5, 2018

CPaaS is an exciting space and Cloudonix is one of the growing players in the area, making it easier for developers to go-to-market and provide solutions for customers. As an interesting differentiator, the company espouses their support for smart devices, applications and web pages.

I recently met with Eric Klein at Astricon in Orlando, as a follow-up meeting we had earlier this year to the one at ITEXPO in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Some of the latest news from the company is a new ISO 27001 certification which aids in winning business from larger companies.

In addition, Eric explained, many companies are happy about working with Cloudonix as they allow CPaaS functionality without per-minute, per-line, per-endpoint, per DID or transaction fees.

Customers buy blocks of 100 concurrent calls and add blocks as they grow.

Cloudonix supports almost 22,000 different smartphones and tablets.
