Without a doubt, one of the greatest new frontiers for technology is to take the banks and credit card companies out – the same way tech companies have taken out retailers, film producers such as Kodak, florists, record companies and more. Expect the major players new players in the space to be Apple, PayPal, Google and Microsoft – interestingly in the late nineties, a Microsoft exec gave a keynote address at a TMC expo and said that we will see mobile payments on the horizon – the prediction will and has come true but one wonders if the world’s largest software company can keep up in the race for mobile – let alone mobile payments.

I have already deposited two checks via mobile phone applications and although it is a weird feeling to rip up checks with your name on them once you are done – it does show how comfortable people will likely become with using their phone as a payment and deposit vehicle. After all, I felt weird the first few times I deposited a check into an ATM machine – many years ago.

Alcatel-Lucent: Mobile Data to be Sold at a Loss

Alcatel-Lucent has a dire warning for wireless carriers and investors… You just aren’t going to make money from wireless broadband. The timing couldn’t be better <sarcasm> to get the news as global carriers are pouring billions into their 4G networks.

What leads the company to this conclusion? The challenge is operators are starting to tier their pricing which means users can get on broadband networks less expensively – moreover, voice revenue is paying much of the carrier bill and as it declines in lockstep with the cost of data plans – carriers could be losing money for years to come.

Thrane & Thrane Update

I recently had a chance to sit with Ron Lockerby of Thrane & Thrane to learn about what was new with the company’s satellite product line which serves a diverse set of markets such as maritime, aeronautical and land mobile. With a total of 600 people in the company and 60% of those being engineers you can expect engineering to be a strong-suit of the organization.

Thrane & Thrane’s maritime products consist of the SAILOR line which is OEMed by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit and the product line consists of VHF, MF/HF, Inmarsat C terminals, complete GMDSS systems including LRIT and SSAS solutions, and a full range of maritime satcom products including Iridium, Mini-M, Fleet, FleetBroadBand, VSAT and satellite TV.

Lockerby spent some time focusing on the company’s Explorer 325 which is a compact voice and broadband solution for vehicles.

Sonos Wireless Dock Review

A while back I reviewed the Sonos wireless home stereo system and was quite impressed. The product is great and in many ways shows how any company can design products which are full of functionality but minimalistic in design. In short, the system allows you to instantly stream music virtually all kinds of music – streaming radio, MP3s, etc to components throughout your home without wires or headaches.

My two areas of improvement for Sonos in my last review were to allow the ability to play web-based audio such as YouTube and to allow Slacker radio to play on the system.

After a whirlwind tour of SATCON and Content & Communications World which took place last week, 4G World and Interop which took place this week and over a hundred meetings, I find myself ruminating over numerous discussions about where things are headed – in terms of content, technology, entertainment and apps.

There are macro trends which are intersecting and diverging and as much as I would like to say I have 100% clarity about it all, I don’t – but I do believe I have enough observations to share in order to get investors and innovators thinking about what the future will look like.

Over the last 30 years the rise of cable and then satellite radio shows consumers will pay money for content and in many cases for the ability to reduce the amount of commercials they consume.

But this idea is under attack from yet another trend emerging over the last few years.
