How Apple Can Slow Samsung Down

Tom Keating at TMC reported today that Samsung is beating virtually everyone at virtually everything. He discusses how they have become the dominant TV maker but this isn’t such big news at this point. What is interesting is the company replaced Nokia as the number one producer of cellphones – not a huge surprise at this point but a huge milestone as Nokia held the coveted top spot for 13 years.

Why is Apple, a company with more consumer loyalty than just about any other company being threatened by Samsung?

Amazon Prime Instant Video app for iOS is out


and in my testing on a 4th generation iPad it worked well. Some complaints remain that for non-Prime users the experience isn’t that great. I for one would like to be able to download video on the app – there is a download area but no instructions as to what is downloadable or how to download.

Alcatel Lucent says providing video to devices is a great new revenue opportunity for carriers.

The Fiscal Cliff Could Kill Super-WiFi

One of the most amazing turning points in technology advancement has been the US Government’s decision to allow unlicensed spectrum to be used in the form of WiFi. Instead of taking the short-term gain of revenue via spectrum auction, it was released for free for everyone to use. As a result, cable companies can compete wirelessly with 4G providers and they need no private spectrum to do so.

The point is, unlicensed spectrum has truly revolutionized technology and productivity. Think this through – even the companies who sell “competitive to WiFi” 4G service are benefiting from WiFi. Consider carriers often wheel in large-scale WiFi equipment to sporting events and other venues because of cellular capacity issues.

T-Mobile Finally Gets the iPhone

While spending time in a T-Mobile and Verizon store in the same city recently I couldn’t help but notice the customers at the Verizon stores were dressed better and seemed far more affluent. This makes sense as T-Mobile offers cheaper service and it is common for people who can’t afford an AT&T or Verizon data plan to unlock an iPhone from AT&T and activate it on T-Mobile. They then access data when WiFi is available for free.

The latest research I found from Strategy Analytics has the spread in ARPU or average revenue per user between these two carriers at $11.45 per month or almost $140 per year.

Google and Dish Were in Talks to Launch Wireless Biz

Some time back I commented on rumors of a Sprint takeover by Google and at the time many thought the idea was crazy. Fast forward a few years, tens of thousands of Android devices and a Motorola Mobility acquisition later and now Google is reportedly in talks to launch a wireless service with a number of companies including Dish Networks. As you may recall, Steve Jobs too wanted to launch a wireless network and if Google is seriously exploring this option this means Apple has to be doing the same.

The next frontier of advertising revenue for Google is mobile and if carriers and Apple decide to lock the company out of this lucrative market (even partially), then they have no choice but to own the wireless pipes.

Mobile Profits are Skyrocketing as 67,000 Are Laid Off

Over the past two years, profits from the top eight mobile vendors has risen from $5.3 billion to $14.4 billion for a whopping increase of $9.1 billion and all this while over 67,000 people have been laid off in the technology. How is this possible you ask? I posited a similar query two months ago regarding Corning’s shares losing value – even while they supply Gorilla Glass to much of the booming mobile market.

Verizon Wireless Back to 97.2% after Sandy

Living through hurricane Sandy in Connecticut maybe eight miles from the shore shielded me from believing the damage would be as bad as it was. Much of the state – by the Long Island Sound especially, got slammed. By now you have likely seen the photos and videos of the damage. Especially lower Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey.

Back to Connecticut, I may never have seen so many trees down in my life and many cities near where I live had over 70% of their residents without power immediately following the storm.



A Little Heavy Chrome

Google has a new heavy metal-based TV commercial which has a Halloween undercurrent. The ad touts the $249 Samsung-made Chromebook as being smaller, better on batteries and good for “scaring off viruses.” It goes on to discuss its lack of phantom files and crashes. Although the video has had under 100,000 views I can see it going viral and perhaps adding a zero to that number.

What is unclear is how much demand there will be for a cloud-based laptop which seems to ape the look of an Apple computer at a fraction of the price.

Best Buy Tablet Doomed?

The common sense analysis of Best Buy’s new Android-based tablet is it is doomed because if only Amazon is able to pull a tablet off by breaking even or even potentially losing money and even Samsung isn’t making a dent in the market, how can Best Buy do any better? The reality is the success of this strategy is a long shot but by the same token you can think of this tablet as a generic product or store brand.

In other words when you go to Costco and buy a Kirkland product you are essentially buying a “store brand” not necessarily manufactured by the retailer, just resold. So Best Buy’s Insignia Flex tablet expected to sell between $239 and $259 can simply be considered a new product in the house-brand category.
