AT&T

Facebook Phone

September 19, 2010

Why your next smartphone may be free

Speculation abounds that Facebook is working on a phone and it seems more than logical to assume it will be based on Android and sold via carriers. In fact one would imagine AT&T is trying like crazy to get an exclusive deal with the company as they desperately need a new hot product when the iPhone potentially becomes available on other networks.

In fact, it would be surprising if carriers haven't been chasing Facebook down to get such a phone with mass appeal out of the gate.

What Cablevision Needs to do Next

September 18, 2010

While others complain about their cable providers, I am pretty happy with mine - Cablevision and Optimum/Optimum Online. The company provides blazing fast Internet at reasonable prices and recently has added services such as WiFi almost everywhere I go, Caller-ID on the TV, and Internet control of the DVR including a mobile site. More recently the company rolled out an iPhone app which is even better than the mobile site in terms of its design.

Do I feel like I am getting a great value on my TV package?

A Blow to Sanctions: Iran Now Powers Regional Internet

September 18, 2010

As Iran pursues its nuclear ambitions it destabilizes the entire region and threatens to spread nuclear war technology throughout the middle-east. Just one side-effect of this trend will be much easier access to nuclear material by terrorists and Iran is already a well-known state sponsor of terrorism so this point isn't a leap of faith.

In response to Iran continuing its nuclear development, many western countries including the US are putting pressure on the country via sanctions which are making the lives of many Iranians much more difficult.

In response, Iran is working on building bridges to its neighbors with a network of road, railway, and tunnel schemes along with expensive port upgrades in what experts say is a concerted attempt to restore the country's traditional role as a trade hub.

Harald Braun Former Aviat Networks CEO Interview

September 17, 2010

I had a chance to have a few conversations recently with former CEO of Aviat Networks Harald Braun (pictured) regarding his current activities. A former International Telecom CEO of the Year, he stepped down a few months ago as Chuck Kissner, who had been Aviat's chairman of the board, has taken his place as CEO.

Braun is currently acting as an adviser to the investment community and also consulting and is interested in new opportunities in a few spaces. I've followed him in his CEO role at Nokia Siemens Networks and Aviat Networks (formerly Harris Stratex) and because he has been a mover and shaker at some major companies I thought it interesting to pass along his areas of interest as he looks for the next big thing.

ECI Telecom Wireless Backhaul Podcast

September 17, 2010

I had a chance to have a podcast interview with Gil Epshtein, Product Marketing Manager at ECI Telecom and during our conversation we discussed why the backhaul market is doing well and moreover how carriers worldwide are evolving and dealing with their various communications challenges. One of the points of interest from our discussion had to do with how next-generation networks and WBH work together nicely.

Take a listen here.

Computer Makers: Get Cool or Get Dead

September 17, 2010

Earlier this decade the smartphone came on the scene to and in short order finished off the PDA. Now the tablet and the smartphone together are eroding the sales growth of notebooks. Recently in fact the CEO of Best Buy said tablets are eating into laptop sales by 50%!

I do not believe the iPad trend is a fad and I can safely say its sales will continue to pick up momentum based on the informal research I have done.

September 15, 2010

Avaya is launching a new interface called Flare. Rumors abound that the big deal here is it is a tablet. the reality is it is a UI which will run on tablets - including the one Avaya is launching today.

This is not designed to be an iPad killer but a Polycom killer instead as the tablet will lower the cost of executive telepresence drastically.

Avaya CEO Steps onstage to talk about Avaya accomplishments and the importance of SIP.

"Apple revolutionized consumer apps - our assault to revolutionize how business workers communicate and collaborate"

Here is the UI - just drag a contact to the center to connect with them.

Avaya to Announce Tablet Tomorrow?

September 14, 2010

I meet with Avaya execs tomorrow and the speculation is the meeting involves the launch of a tablet. I mentioned Cisco is already announcing new apps for their tablet and it isn't even out yet. The tablet race is certainly on and I am looking forward to seeing what Avaya has to show. Now I am wondering if I should just leave the iPad at home.

Steve Jobs Loses his Stars

September 14, 2010

It seems Steve Jobs was stopped from taking ninja throwing stars aboard his own private jet as he left Japan. He pointed out he is likely not going to hijack his own plane but still, no deal as the stars were discarded. Jobs threatened to never go back to Japan but if he really wants to get revenge he should launch a line of consumer devices which take almost all the marketshare from an incumbent Japanese company like Sony.

Wait a second, he already did this - maybe that's why Japanese authorities are a bit miffed - after all the person checking luggage now could have once had a lucrative job assembling Walkmans.
