Move into Your Bathroom and Change Your Name to Avoid Tech Pitfalls

August 25, 2010

Apparently there is something called a tech addiction - at least that is what I heard as I was browsing the web from my iPad last night in bed while watching TV. I don't consider myself a tech addict as I only use technology when I am awake and only have 3 monitors and one TV in my office. Then again, I do have an electronic picture frame in here which is on its last transistors and a Sony Dash which should arrive any moment.

So I was very surprised when I heard a man in Queens, NY moved into his bathroom to cure his tech addiction.

ITEXPO West 2010 Update August 24, 2010

August 24, 2010

I have lots of exciting news to report about ITEXPO West 2010 Oct 4-6 in Los Angeles - there will be a total of 12 collocated events at the show. Some of these include, 4GWE, Smart Grid, M2M, CVx, SPEC, Cloud Communications, MSPWorld, SIP Tutorial, VI Peering, App-Time and Lightwave ONE. There is also a Social CRM Expo, MSP World and much more.

I am trying to keep my readers up to date on what is happening in what is probably the most exciting tech week of the year.

Of Course Apple Will Take the 30%

August 24, 2010

Apple has two choices going forward - focus on platforms such as the iMac which are open and allow customers to run things like Flash games or close it all up and force users to use the App Store and pick up 30% on each sale and in-app purchase. Sure the company has to host massive data centers to deal with all the app downloading and upgrades but any sane person would do whatever it takes to move the entire company to iOS as fast as possible and start raking in massive amounts of dough.

What was that sound you just heard? Oh, about a dozen Adobe execs jumping off the rooftop of their San Jose HQ.

MSPWorld, Another Great Reason to Come to ITEXPO

August 23, 2010

ITEXPO has become one of the defacto tech events - starting out as a communications-focused conference it has slowly but surely become an umbrella event encompassing all the exciting segments of technology and communications. Now to put this in perspective, I am a techie - but I don't launch shows because I want you to come and see cool stuff. We have been adding collocated events at ITEXPO because we believe there is potential for the subject matter covered to make or save our delegates money.

We want you to be able to go to a single event and see so much opportunity that you will bring even more people to the next event and so on.

Hot Communications Trends August 20, 2010

August 20, 2010

I recently received a TMCnet What's Hot in VoIP newsletter which had a number of stories worth sharing. First off is Comcast who is losing VoIP share to competitors but is still moving forward with plans for WiFi roaming and philanthropy. I have noticed Time Warner WiFi hotspots popping up all around TMC HQ in Norwalk, CT but have yet been able to connect to the service. If I do, I will keep you posted on my impressions.

M2M Market to Grow to $18B in 5 Years

August 17, 2010

You may have heard one of the absolute brightest spots in the tech space is the machine to machine or M2M market where analysts believe sales will total $18 billion in the next five years as device totals surge from 75 million to over 225 million.

The M2M Evolution conference is the world's gathering place for information on this market and it will be held concurrently with ITEXPO October 4-6, 2010 in Los Angeles and coincidentally we just announced an important keynote at this event today.

Jeffrey O. Smith, Ph.D. is the Chairman of Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), TR-50 Smart Device Communications Engineering Committee, and Chief Technology Officer of Numerex.

Yahoo Mail on iPad Better than Apple Mail

August 17, 2010

Yahoo Mail on the iPad is a beautiful thing and is a rare situation where an application is better than what Apple itself has created. To make matters more interesting it is not only much better than a native application - in this case the Mail app which comes with the iPad but it is based on HTML5 and as a browser-based app it is supposed to be at a disadvantage.

We Don't Need no Stinking Broadband Stimulus Dollars

August 16, 2010

Just when you thought the broadband stimulus funds had been allocated and it was time to move on to other things word comes from TMC's Paula Bernier that many companies are rejecting the funds because the administration wants to ensure the investors do not directly benefit from the incoming funds. As Paula explains:

That's the word from Kevin Morgan of ADTRAN, a network equipment supplier that has played a leading role in helping educate service providers and others about the broadband stimulus program.

"I do know some customers that were initially awarded money have decided that they're not going to take it, for a variety of reasons," says Morgan.

Pimp Your iPad and iPhone 4 With Carbon Fiber

August 16, 2010

The saying goes, if you have to ask how much an exotic sports car costs, you can't afford it. The good news is if you are a tech and car nut you can accessorize your devices in a manner which may appeal to both your techie and auto sides while not totally breaking the bank. Many exotic cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris are built in-part with carbon fiber which is a super-strong and lightweight material also used to build fighter jets.

An accessory maker named monCarbone has just released a line of cases for iPads and iPhone 4s called HoverCoat and they come in Mystery Black, Midnight Black, for the iPad and iPhone 4 and soon there will be a Luminous Silver option for the iPhone 4.
