Ng Connect's Broadband Industry Convergence Opportunity

February 16, 2009

In 1998 I was walking the halls of a prepaid calling card trade show in New York's Javits center and I mentioned to one of the vendors that the future for service providers was enhanced services. The reply from the vendor was blunt. "Service providers don't want to sell enhanced services," he exclaimed.

And it seems a decade later, this random exhibitor was right on.

RIM Refocuses on Strengths

February 11, 2009

For all the talk of devices and the consumer electronics angle on smartphones, the one company who has the end-to-end solutions which allow it to really differentiate itself is RIM... a company which enables smartphones to be truly government-approved secure endpoints on wireless networks. At a recent press conference in Manhattan, the company announced Blackberry Enterprise Server 5.0, what the company says is the simplest upgrade ever and available next quarter.

The benefits of BES 5.0 are a redefined administration console which boosts productivity of support personnel and users.

RIM Event In New York

February 10, 2009

Tomorrow I am in NYC for a RIM event. Wonder what they have in store. More to come, including photos of my trip into the city. I know, I know you are on the edges of your seats.

Perhaps they will show us new UC solution?

Wireless Carriers Give up on New Services

February 5, 2009

Google recently released an application called Latitude which allows you to give your friends access to your whereabouts on a Google map. When I tried to download it on my iPhone I received a message saying it is coming soon. I didn't try on my XV6800 because the GPS has been crippled by HTC at the request of Verizon Wireless.

The service does allow control over what information is shared so privacy experts should be somewhat less concerned.

Loving Boingo

February 1, 2009

I am sitting here in LaGuardia Airport in New York, waiting for my flight to Miami for ITEXPO and loving Boingo. I thought it would be a hassle to download and use it but it was the easiest thing I could have ever done. I downloaded the app on my laptop first and started uploading photos - boy is it fast. Then the iPhone - there is an app for many mobile devices - I decided not to put it on the XV6800 for now.
