Sangoma: From Open Source to Unified Communications

I recently had a chance to speak with David Mandelstam at the Communications Developer Conference last month in Santa Clara, CA. Sangoma was one of the highlights at the show as the company had produced a few record quarters in a row just prior to the event. Even more impressive the company turned in yet another record-breaking quarter of 24% growth quarter over quarter. It was great to catch up with David and hear his thoughts on where the company is going. One thing I mentioned to David is how his customers consistently tell me how great the voice quality and reliability is of their cards.

IP Sizzles

I will be speaking at the IP Sizzles conference this summer in Dallas, TX. Robert Messer and the ABP team do a great job putting this conference together and this year marks the first time the show will be called IP Sizzles. Prior to this event it was VoIP Sizzles. As the market has evolved from VoIP to IP Communications, many show organizers and communications providers have shifted their marketing and content strategies accordingly. Ken Camp

Be sure to sign up for Internet Telephony Conference & Expo (ITEXPO) now and be part of the world’s premiere IP communications event. World-famous blogger, journalist and author Ken Camp will be there as well (Ken is there anywhere you don’t go? ). It will be good to see Ken again and speaking with him is always refreshing as he has tremendous experience in telecom and datacom having designed very large networks and worked at very large communications organizations. Communications Optimism

Last week I had a chance to spend a good deal of time with Norman Stout the CEO of Inter-Tel. He told me he is more optimistic about the spend in the market than any time in the last 7-8 years. Some of this is due to leases which expire and part of it has to do with the move to IP and the need for applications to increase productivity, etc. He didn’t have much new to say about the Mitel merger except that things are moving along nicely and he hasn’t had much interaction with Steve Mihaylo / Vector Capital (see Greg Galitzine’s blog for details on the potential competition to purchase Inter-Tel).

Mihaylo Bids for Inter-Tel

There is a higher bid for Inter-Tel than what Mitel initially offered to pay. The bid is being led by Steve Mihaylo who is a major shareholder of Inter-Tel and the former founder. Rumor has it Steve who has been a keynote speaker at a prior Internet Telephony Conference & Expo has board members who can help direct the sale of the company back into his control.

Mihaylo had a former offer for the company rejected as you may recall.

GIPS News

Global IP Solutions, the company formerly known as Global IP Sound is well known as the company providing VoiceEngine technology. Their products enable communications for millions of users each day as their technology is found in Skype, WebEx and others. Today at the Communications Developer Conference the company announced a new version of one of their their VoIP embedded media processing solutions. The new product is called VoiceEngine Multimedia Lite and according to Matt Benkoil, the GIPs development community director, it combines the power and performance of GIPS VoiceEngine with high quality video conferencing support. I am actually working pretty early for California and this news comes to me in the form of a press release so I am not able to ask the company any questions. If I could I would ask what makes the software “lite.” I would imagine the software perhaps has less functionality and takes less processing power than the regular version of the product. If/when I find out more I will update this post.

Aculab Supports PCI Express

Some developer news of note is Aculab’s move to have the Prosody X DSP resource board support the PCI Express bus. This is not unexpected of course as this new bus is becoming more popular. Announced here in Santa Clara at TMC’s Communications Developer Conference there is also a promotional package being introduced which the company tells me consists of the following: Product – Two Prosody X PCIe media processing cards, each supporting 300 voice channels and 2 E1/T1 trunks, with CSS/CAS/SS7 protocols.
Training – One delegate placement on a one day training course ‘Implementing VoIP applications with Prosody X’. Courses will be onsite in Aculab’s offices in Milton Keynes, UK and Needham, USA.
Technical consultancy – Benefit from an Aculab consultant spending a day onsite in your office – sharing expertise on structuring solution architectures based on Prosody X and helping with the actual application development and testing.
Technical support – Free and unlimited access to Aculab’s technical support.

Functionality – Access to Aculab’s complete portfolio of media processing and signaling software, including SIP, H.323 and SS7, with an unrestricted number of channels.
Software updates – Free future software updates, including the planned roadmap functionality for IP and 3G mobile video support, wideband voice codecs, etc. So the news here is a bit about the new bus support but perhaps most importantly the development package meant to sweeten the pot.

Asterisk Fuels Speech Technologies

If open-source telephony is going mainstream as I recently wrote about, then the subsets of open-source telephony are also booming. For example, speech recognition in the open-source world is becoming more and more important. Case in point, a company called LumenVox has been working closely with Digium to provide speech recognition to Asterisk users. Using a speech API (in the world of Asterisk it is called an AGI or Asterisk Gateway Implementation) Asterisk users can now have access to LumenVox speech technology. In addition, Asterisk developers can use the familiar Asterisk Dial Plan environment for programming.
