68 Countries Register For ITEXPO

January 4, 2006

I just got word that people from over 68 countries will be attending Internet Telephony Conference & Expo. VoIP growth is really taking off and this is such a worldwide phenomenon that I am not surprised to see such large international registration. I just can’t wait for this event which I have dubbed the UN of VoIP in the past.

As I drove into work today on sheets of dangerous and well camouflaged black ice, my thermometer said 28 degrees. I am just 20 days away from going down to sunny Florida for ITEXPO.

Microsoft, Softbank and Japan Telecom Oh My

December 28, 2005

Microsoft Co. Ltd., SOFTBANK BB Corp., and JAPAN TELECOM CO. LTD., announced that they are developing a security-enhanced, integrated communications service that combines VoIP, e-mail, Internet access, groupware, presence, instant messaging and desktop services with network infrastructure, and that they have formed a strategic business alliance to provide this service as a business-oriented solution.

I get the feeling this just may be the first step towards my dream of Just in Time Communications or JiTC. SOFTBANK is the largest VoIP provider in Japan and perhaps if this deployment is successful we will find it coming to the US and other parts of the world.

Microsoft has impressed me as of late with their JiTC initiatives. At the last ITEXPO, Microsoft demoed something very close to the perfect JiTC solution.

Rates Technology Sues Google

December 27, 2005

Many months back I wrote an article on Rates Technology Inc.– A company with a patent portfolio currently being used to persuade VoIP equipment and service vendors to pay a fee in exchange for protection from a patent infringement lawsuit. I wasn’t sure if people would care about my article because there were few references to Rates Technology on the Internet. Since Rates Technology has been around for years I certainly wasn’t discovering them but it does seem I was the first to take the time to explain how the company works.

Fast forward about eight months. Today I received an e-mail from Tom Keating telling me that Om Malik has linked to me in his blog regarding Rates Technology.

I was pretty blown away as I thought I would never hear about this company again.

SOA, SCA and SDO

November 29, 2005

Service oriented architectures are something I have been writing more and more about recently. Expect SOA and communications to become more intricately intertwined. Announcements like this are great because it shows the massive amount of collaboration SOA is bringing to an industry of once closed and proprietary standards.

Here is an excerpt:

The SOA Programming Model specifications include the Service Component Architecture (SCA) to simplify the development of creating business services and Service Data Objects (SDO) for accessing data residing in multiple locations and formats.

SCA provides an open, technology neutral model for implementing IT services that are defined in terms of a business function and make middleware functions more accessible to the application developer.  SCA also provides a model for the assembly of business solutions from collections of individual services, with control over aspects of the solution such as access methods and security.   Vendors working to create SCA include BEA Systems, IBM, IONA, Oracle,

SAP, Siebel and Sybase.

SDO complements SCA by providing a common way to access many different kinds of data.

SER For Sale

November 29, 2005

Rumor has it SER is for sale and has $50 million in sales for the year. The sale makes good sense as a good part of the company’s inbound strategy was dependant on Aspect and now Aspect is owned by archrival Concerto (the company is now called Aspect Software).

SER has the absolute cream of the crop clients in the contact center space and this makes it a great buy. The downside is its overdependence on outbound which is seen as a negative.

Potential acquirers are likely Concerto of all people but don’t count out a fund who has investments in the call center space. Many funds are flowing with money and are looking for new places to invest.
