Finally Headsets Get Smart

December 10, 2010

You get a call, you pick up the headset and put it on your ear and then turn on the headset to connect the call.

One of these steps is not needed.

The Apple iPhone popularized the motion sensor/accelerometer and Sonos uses this technology to keep its remote control powered down until it is picked up.

Now headsets can join the motion sensing party and the latest one from Plantronics, the Voyager UC Pro which ships early next year will acknowledge the fact you have picked it up by switching the call to the device.

What could be better than a world filled with smarter devices, making our lives easier? Thanks Plantronics... This is a really good idea.

TMC broke the story earlier today for more on this new bluetooth headset.

Cisco Social Video Ad I Like

December 1, 2010

Last week I shared a video ad from Calabrio I thought was great and a as a result, Ross Daniels shared a Cisco ad which is quite good as well. For the decades as I have covered the communications and tech space, I have been amazed at how dry marketing and PR can be. I am thrilled to see human interest being injected into promotional messages - making them more engaging and potentially viral.

Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Impresses

November 14, 2010

TMC’s Tom Keating reported the fact that Microsoft OCS will be called Lync going forward and the name is much more conducive as a Skype alternative as asking someone to Lync you sounds much better than asking them to OCS you. Tom and I recently went to Manhattan with a group of analysts and other media to get a demo of the system at Microsoft's Technology center and put it through its paces. We had a chance to see about a dozen or more machines with various endpoints and spent time listening to Jamie Stark the Senior Product Manager walk us through what this new release will do for customers.

Broadvox Buys Cypress - Advice to Acquirers

October 17, 2010

TMC blogger, Peter Radizeski may have set two records in breaking news of two acquisitions in one day. If that isn't a record, certainly the fact that both acquiring companies start with the same five letters has to make it into the Guinness Book.

First there was Broadsoft acquiring Casabi which I commented on last week. Next there was Broadvox acquiring Cypress Communications which Peter broke here and follwed up on here. TMC's Paula Bernier added her opinions to the mix and further reminds us of a slew of other acquisitions taking place in the market.

My thoughts on the matter are fairly simple and straightforward.

10 Reasons Why Cisco Umi Telepresence Will Fail

October 7, 2010

The details of Cisco's umi telepresence solution are available according to TMCnet articles by Beecher Tuttle and and Professor Mary Cronin and as I fly cross country the sinus pressure in my head caused by a prolonged cold is exacerbated by thoughts on why Cisco is making a mistake with its new umi home telepresence solution.

Of course whenever new technologies come out no one knows for sure what will happen but these are the reasons I believe this solution will fail.

1) Skype. Elaboration would be talking (writing) down to you.
2) Cisco's solution at $599 for the equipment and $24.99 per month is insane for a new consumer technology which has little to no network effect related to Metcalfe's Law. Oh and you need 3.5 Mbps upload speed for 1080p calls - meaning higher broadband bills for some.
3) Facetime: Apple's Facetime is free and even though at the recent ITEXPO many people commented that using the software on an iPhone 4 is not great because inevitably your hand gets tired and falls to your stomach causing a nose-hair view of yourself to be transmitted - we can expect Apple to Facetime-enable everything they sell. Will umi interoperate?

Thought Leaders Descend Upon ITEXPO

October 2, 2010

Kind of a silly term- "thought leader" but in every market there are people involved in setting the conversation... Those whose thoughts and ideas permeate the web and industry conversations. "Did you hear what so and so said? Can you believe he thinks this company sells junk products and won't be around in a year?"

Well you get the idea.

It turns out a number of the people in the market who I have personally followed for some time have joined forces on a blog called Voyces.
