Epygi Adds PBX Features, Moves Upmarket

April 12, 2010

One certainty in the world is that feature wars often get fought in the battle to win the most customers. If you don't beleive me, think of how few features your car had 15 years ago compared to today. In speaking with Warren Sonnen - Director, Product Management at Epygi, he tells me some other vendors are using features instead of quality to win over customers. His company's mission (and he has chosen to accept it) is to provide quality and features in one package.

Varaha Extends FMC to NEC UNIVERGE

April 11, 2010

As mobility becomes a larger part of boosting productivity and satisfying the desires of companies to keep workers connected, NEC has partnered with FMC company Varaha to add value to its solutions. NEC has always been a solid tech company but they have decreasing mindshare in the enterprise/SMB market according to VARs and corporate buyers I encounter. They certainly aren't alone in this regard but to counter a lack of mindshare they have done a very good job of making aggressive acquisitions and relationships over the years. Sphere and Active Voice /AVST come immediately to mind.

Communications and Tech Trends From Dallas

April 9, 2010

I am back from Dallas, TX where I met with dozens of communications and tech companies and I gained a great deal of insight on industry hotspots as well as where the speed bumps are.

Open Source

Based on the resellers I spoke with, the move to open source continues with more of the agent community and interconnects 2.0 learning about and selling these solutions.

IP Security Cameras

I spoke with Robert Messer of distributor ABP and he shared with me the wonder of IP security cameras which work with digital signage to show alerts on screens throughout an office. He mentioned that people think twice about getting their hands caught in the cookie jar when they realize it could be broadcast throughout a company.

FCC Ruling Could Inject Politics into News Delivery

April 7, 2010

A major court just killed the idea of net neutrality. Where do we go from here?

Yesterday a three-judge panel unanimously tossed out the FCC's August 2008 cease and desist order against Comcast, which had taken measures to slow BitTorrent transfers but which had voluntarily discontinued the practice earlier in the year.

CradlePoint Turns Phones and 3G modems into Access Points

March 31, 2010

Two years back I hacked into my Verizon XV6800 - an HTC device so I could install WMWifiRouter software which turned the phone into a hotspot. I still remember getting it to work and marveling at how people in the TMC conference room could connect to my pseudo AP and work as usual. Sure, the phone got hot enough to melt concrete and the battery was depleted faster than the US treasury but still, it was an amazing achievement.

Israel VC Funds Down 92% from High

March 8, 2010

Some of the best technology in the world was invented in Israel. The VoIP market was launched in the country and the biblical land of milk and honey still leads the world in communications and technology. Many US-based companies do much of their R&D in Israel in fact because there is such a strong pool of talent and the Israelis seem to be very inventive.

With a strong track record and in a market where technology seems to be one of the more stable investment areas, it is a bit of a surprise to see that the amount of VC funds raised last year was less than one-tenth of the all-time high of $2.9 billion raised in 2000.

Let Companies, not Government Create Jobs

February 23, 2010

Maybe it's because I am a techie or perhaps because I have seen how the post office, tax code and department of motor vehicles works - but I am fairly certain that an investment by Intel - in this case $2 billion for new US companies will generate 100x more lasting jobs per dollar than the US government via stimulus and/or jobs bills. It is worth pointing out that there are other firms investing as well bringing the total investment amount to $3.5B.

The reason VC firms are investing now is they feel more secure about the future and sense the opportunity to make money. This is what drives capitalism -- the opportunity to make money.

History has shown the US economy is vibrant and ever-evolving.

The Microsoftization of Google

February 10, 2010

You have to give Google credit; they seem to want to make the world a better place by opening up the world and making technology and services more accessible. And they are powerful enough to make it all happen - search revenue pours in and is being allocated to services which compete with Amazon and Microsoft among others. In the mobile phone space they go up against Palm, RIM, Nokia and Microsoft.

Yesterday they announced a new social networking initiative called Buzz which is supposed to unseat Facebook and twitter.
