Cisco

Wes Hayden

October 1, 2007

Let’s congratulate Wes Hayden who was just appointed to the role of President, Nuance Enterprise Division. Hayden will report to Paul Ricci, Nuance's chairman and CEO.   As Nuance focuses more on selling integrated solutions I expect Hayden’s skill sets to come into play. After all, as President and CEO of Genesys Telecommunications --his former position, he had to deal with integration on a regular basis.   As you may recall, in the nineties, Genesys Labs (That is what they used to be called) was known as the middleware company and was a leader in the CTI space. If you wanted to integrate a Rockwell ACD (remember them – they are now Aspect) with an SER dialer – or were they EIS back then?

Emerson buys Motorola ECC

September 29, 2007

Emerson recently picked up the embedded computing division from Motorola. This is a good move for Motorola as the company can put more of their focus on handsets and other core areas of their business. Right now Nokia and Apple are major threats and one less distraction always helps.   I am very impressed with the Motorola embedded team and the Emerson team (although I haven’t known this group for very long). Here is an article I wrote about Emerson Network Power a few months back.   I always felt the embedded team was lost at Motorola -- a small division with lots of potential that couldn’t get the corporate parent’s attention.   If Emerson can continue their increased branding and awareness and stronger PR push while not losing their technological edge and great engineering team, this acquisition will be good for all parties involved.

3COM Sold

September 28, 2007

The Wall Street Journal reported that 3COM will be acquired by Bain Capital and Huawei Technologies. TMC’s Greg Galitzine has a call into 3COM for comments but what we know so far is the transaction is at $5+/share meaning more than $2 billion. Huawei and 3COM have been business partners in the past and my impression was this relationship didn’t result in the sales progress either company hoped for.   Interestingly Huawei hasn’t made a huge dent in the US as of yet and this is surprising. Then again, I recently read an article discussing the idea that Chinese automakers will be slower to enter the US market in a serious way because their home market shows so much promise.

ITEXPO West 2007 Scores Big in L.A.

September 26, 2007

Here is my Publisher’s Outlook from the October 2007 Internet Telephony Magazine. It is rough and needs some editing but should give you a good idea of why you should be subscribing and reading every issue of the magazine.   ----   The most recent Internet Telephony Conference & Expo in Los Angeles, California demonstrated to me (and everyone in attendance) just how strong the IP communications market is. We had a tremendous number of resellers, enterprise customers and service providers at the show. What perhaps caught me off guard most was just how high the energy level at the show was.

Ovum on Alcatel-Lucent

September 14, 2007

Steven Hartley, telecoms senior analyst at Ovum comments on: Alcatel-Lucent: There may be trouble ahead.   I referred to this news yesterday and Hartley’s comments don’t overlap with mine too much so I thought they were worth sharing. ---   “Another quarter and another profit warning from Alcatel-Lucent. The announcement is a continuation of the trends seen over the last two quarters and has worried already nervous investors, as evidenced by a 9% drop in the share price yesterday. It will undoubtedly increase the pressure on CEO Pat Russo.”   “Neither Ericsson nor Nokia Siemens Networks shares were markedly affected by yesterday's announcement, so this appears to be an Alcatel-Lucent phenomenon.

Make Money Selling VoIP

September 10, 2007

The VAR is Dead and Partner is Born   In a session titled how to make Money selling VoIP Robert Messer spoke today about how resellers need to evolve to become successful. Robert who works for ABP Technology a distributor of communications solutions mentioned resellers who embrace innovation are most successful. He says you must partner with your customers.   To be a reseller is the wrong paradigm he mentions. The most successful resellers reposition themselves as technology partners – not resellers.
