SIP Trunking: 190 out of 200 Unprepared!

September 30, 2010

Photo of past SIP Trunking session at ITEXPO

Many thousands of attendees have been part of the Ingate SIP trunking sessions at ITEXPO over the years and yet Joel Maloff of Maloff NetResults notes, even a year ago, “it was like talking to the wind,” when it came to voice network security.

It seems to me the early part of the SIP trunking education was discovering what it was and how it could help you. Now that we are seeing massive adoption rates the next phase of market education will include SIP security and ensuring calls are protected from prying ears inside and beyond your organization.

Erik Linask has more in an in-depth article on the matter. Be sure to come to the SIP Trunking sessions at ITEXPO which is now the SIP Trunking-Unified Communications Summit.

StartupCamp, Communications Edition which was one of the most exciting events at ITEXPO earlier this year in Miami has some exciting news. It has just named its final presenter - Cloud Telecomputers.

Here is an excerpt from the news release:

The organizers also announced a charity connection to StartupCamp that is sure to add intrigue to an already high-energy evening. Audience members will each receive up to $100,000 in play money, and with it instantly become "angel investors" for a night. Once all the companies have presented, attendees will be asked to "place their bets" by creating a portfolio of at least two of the startups.

TerreStar Networks AT&T Satellite Phone is Here

September 28, 2010

Last year I conducted an interview with TerreStar Networks CTO CTO Dennis Matteson and he showed off his company's exciting new smartphone which works on 3G and Satellite networks allowing customers to utilize the best network for the call depending on circumstances. The video interview below shows you how this impossibly small device looks a lot like a Blackberry or any other smartphone which has a keyboard. This gadget really sets a new standard for sat phones and unlike most satellite phones, you won't feel like you are from the Jurassic when you take it out in public.

As satellites are farther than cell towers, you can expect this world phone to go through battery fairly quickly when communicating with them. In addition there is bluetooth, WiFi and lots of other goodies as part of the package.

Cindy Waxer covers the details on this phone's delay and release on TMCnet.

Must-Attend Networking Event at ITEXPO

September 27, 2010

Please be sure to come to the Bonaventure Brewing Company Patio at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel this Monday, Oct 4th, 5:30-8:30 PM for some of the best networking at the show. I have attended many events at this location at past ITEXPOs and the setting is by far one of the best for this sort of reception.

In addition to meeting with the TMC team, you get to meet with the sponsor of the reception, Interactive Intelligence and a number of speakers from the show.

Some of the best knowledge you gain from an event comes from the receptions and if what I've written isn't enticing enough, consider you'll get to meet major league pitcher Jim Abbott as he is the guest speaker of the evening.

Learning, networking and if you play your cards right you may get an autograph - what could be better?

Here are the hotel details:

What Verizon, Time Warner Think of Video Shift

September 27, 2010

As TV shifts to mobile phones and the web it is interesting to see Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Time Warner the entertainment company all think they will be OK as the evolution continues. Verizon thinks FiOS will help them differentiate through add-ons and services like 3D made possible by its higher capacity lines.

Time Warner Cable thinks they are shielded from any problems because they will be supplying broadband lines which will not be affected by the change. Time Warner – the entertainment company for its part thinks it’s in OK shape because it supplies content – regardless of distribution method.

Last May, I wrote about how TV disruption may happen more slowly than you think and while my past post deals with content providers who are in no hurry to give up billions of dollars of affiliate fees to stream content for free, we need to look at the situation from the perspective of the user.
