TerreStar Networks AT&T Satellite Phone is Here

September 28, 2010

Last year I conducted an interview with TerreStar Networks CTO CTO Dennis Matteson and he showed off his company's exciting new smartphone which works on 3G and Satellite networks allowing customers to utilize the best network for the call depending on circumstances. The video interview below shows you how this impossibly small device looks a lot like a Blackberry or any other smartphone which has a keyboard. This gadget really sets a new standard for sat phones and unlike most satellite phones, you won't feel like you are from the Jurassic when you take it out in public.

As satellites are farther than cell towers, you can expect this world phone to go through battery fairly quickly when communicating with them. In addition there is bluetooth, WiFi and lots of other goodies as part of the package.

Cindy Waxer covers the details on this phone's delay and release on TMCnet.

Must-Attend Networking Event at ITEXPO

September 27, 2010

Please be sure to come to the Bonaventure Brewing Company Patio at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel this Monday, Oct 4th, 5:30-8:30 PM for some of the best networking at the show. I have attended many events at this location at past ITEXPOs and the setting is by far one of the best for this sort of reception.

In addition to meeting with the TMC team, you get to meet with the sponsor of the reception, Interactive Intelligence and a number of speakers from the show.

Some of the best knowledge you gain from an event comes from the receptions and if what I've written isn't enticing enough, consider you'll get to meet major league pitcher Jim Abbott as he is the guest speaker of the evening.

Learning, networking and if you play your cards right you may get an autograph - what could be better?

Here are the hotel details:

What Verizon, Time Warner Think of Video Shift

September 27, 2010

As TV shifts to mobile phones and the web it is interesting to see Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Time Warner the entertainment company all think they will be OK as the evolution continues. Verizon thinks FiOS will help them differentiate through add-ons and services like 3D made possible by its higher capacity lines.

Time Warner Cable thinks they are shielded from any problems because they will be supplying broadband lines which will not be affected by the change. Time Warner – the entertainment company for its part thinks it’s in OK shape because it supplies content – regardless of distribution method.

Last May, I wrote about how TV disruption may happen more slowly than you think and while my past post deals with content providers who are in no hurry to give up billions of dollars of affiliate fees to stream content for free, we need to look at the situation from the perspective of the user.

Smart SMS the Future of Advertising?

September 27, 2010

It is no secret that technology is moving the world from being relaxed to real-time  and companies more than ever need to be able to turn on a  dime to be competitive. But while industries have increased their speed, offline advertising has stayed fairly stodgy.

For example, online advertisers - many news sites in fact, launched targeted ad campaigns the moment they learned about the BP oil spill but television and radio advertisers have to wait a good deal of time for new ads to be created and distributed.

I was reading an interesting article on TMCnet from Bob Emmerson about how SMS can not only help entrepreneurs in third-world countries but it can also be used to update video ads (via MMS) in taxis and other places such as elevators, restaurants and grocery check-out lines.

As mobile advertising becomes a larger area and the addressable market becomes not only the devices mentioned above but every cell phone in existence, the opportunity for technology to help advertisers increase sales rates becomes very real. For example, let's say hundreds of thousands of people descend upon a sports arena - at the moment the MVP of the game is announced, advertisers can beam out targeted ads congratulating the player and offering a  related discount.

Then there are ads which can be rolled out tied to news of the day.

In short, the targeted and intelligent use of technology can help increase advertising ROI while helping boost carrier revenue.

Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook Reveals Much on 60 Minutes

September 27, 2010

If you missed the 60 Minutes interview with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, here are some things you need to know:

  • The engineers engage in hackathons - allowing engineers to compete on programming tasks
  • Speed chess and all-night programming are activities often engaged in
  • The company has a new way of displaying profile pages which is more photo-centric
  • A dozen programmers worked on this redesign in a war-room littered with used toothpaste tubes and dirty plates
  • Over 200,000 people access Facebook from mobile devices
  • Messaging is one of the latest products - something Facebook calls the ultimate switchboard
  • Mark thinks these messages are slowly replacing email
  • Gmail was not the target of Facebook's messaging platform
Mark was hit with questions regarding privacy - and he responded by saying advertisers have no access to people's information and they never use it.

Interviewer Lesley Stahl asked about apps which access information of a personal nature and Zuckerberg explained that if apps do something they aren't supposed to like invading privacy, they are shut down.

Zuckerberg says they don't get it right every time but they keep trying to get better.

He further explained that privacy and control over personal information is one of the most important things on the Internet.

Many of Google's top employees have defected to Facebook - 200 ex-Googlers now work at Facebook. Mark explained that social adds to the experience of virtually everything you do online.

Here is the two-part interview and an article worth reading from CNET's Caroline McCarthy. Here is video1 and video 2 if the videos below don't workl

After my Boston Trip, Boy do we Need 4G

September 27, 2010

After taking a train up to Boston's Back Bay Station and back from Connecticut I was able to witness first hand how bad 3G has gotten. I have taken the train for many years and have watched every wireless technology come out, work great and then become saturated with users and slow to a crawl. 1xRTT for example - when it came out it seemed so fast but over time it slowed as more laptops invaded the train.

Yes, there used to be a time when you got rapid access to the net for hours at a time.

But today, Verizon's network has many choke points. I was on an Acela train by the way which is fantastic way to travel and now includes free WiFI.

ITEXPO West 2010 News and Interviews

September 22, 2010

ITEXPO is almost here - and there will be lots of news broken at this event based upon what my team tells me. In addition, some of the early news on the event is beginning to break and I hope to see you October 4-6, 2010 in Los Angeles.

Check out this article on Aculab's new products, AMS Server & ApplianX IP Gateway 2.2 to be released at the show. AMS Server gives developers more choices for creating telephony-based applications through its API support of both C# and Python, the preferred languages of many business-oriented application writers.
