Invitation Only Video Interviews in San Jose with TMC

June 29, 2010

OK - it is kind of weird to call it "invitation only" if I am blogging about it but somehow it doesn't seem right to not let you know that TMC will be on-hand in Silicon Valley performing a host of video interviews with the best and brightest minds in tech and communications at the San Jose Marriott Tues, JULY 13th - Thurs, JULY 15th.

A sample screen shot of an interview which took place just outside of Washington DC

Here is a link to the most recent interviews I posted from a similar trip to the Washington DC area. If you are interested in consideration be sure to reach out immediately to Jaime Hernaez (jhernaez (at) tmcnet.com).

Since word got out about these interviews the spots have been filling up faster than in any city we have gone to so please be aware we expect all spots to fill up soon.

Here is a sample video from our recent DC trip

Russia Spies Use Ad-Hoc WiFi Network

June 29, 2010

In a world where the Internet is so pervasive and content flows so freely in such massive quantities, you would imagine encrypted information can be sent undetected between spy agencies and spies. Why, you may wonder would anyone transfer covert in any other manner? Still, this is exactly what happened when a gang of alleged Russian spies communicated via ad-hoc network between coffee shops and a nearby van. In addition, the ring made use of prepaid phones.

Sonos Nearly Perfects Home Audio

June 27, 2010

This summer more Americans than ever are conserving cash by taking staycations and in doing so, many are looking to add nice touches to their homes to make their lives more comfortable. A new 3D TV may be one way to go about improving the house but another is boosting the capability and functionality of your sound system.

For many months I have been enjoying the Sonos multi-room music system which uses WiFi to stream many different types of audio throughout your home. What made me decide to go with Sonos myself was their introduction last winter of an all-in-one "boom box" style stereo which looks like something Apple or Bose would make.

The Need for Wireless Broadband Speed on Amtrak

June 23, 2010

Having been an early adopter of 2G, 1X, EVDO, 3G, etc I can tell you the speed of wireless access on the train between Washington DC and New York and back seems worse than at any point in recent memory. Here are some speed test results from AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless and you can see they are terrible. Actually they are much worse than the numbers here because of the frequent random delays. It is virtually impossible to work at such speeds and repeated tests show similar numbers and I have seen many speed tests freeze up.

This is the result of the Verizon Wireless speed test

The result of the tethered iPhone AT&T speed test

It is worth noting that the Verizon scores are based on the wireless modem in my Dell Latitude E6500 laptop while the AT&T score is based on a tethered iPhone.

Apple App Store the OPEC of the West

June 16, 2010

I try to always look out for my readers and as such I have been one of the harshest critics of closed app stores and how they could change the computing paradigm via censorship which is not good for users. But for the US there may be very important reasons to embrace this new transformation - especially as it pertains to the Apple and iTunes App Store. To set this article up let's explore the extent of global software piracy - currently the total amount of pirated software stands at $53B according to a study by the BSA and IDC.

According to the report:

Google's Thoughts on Apps Marketplace

June 15, 2010

Recently I wrote about the Google Apps Marketplace and how it brings a walled garden approach to the desktop and my thesis revolved around the idea that a few years back you could download any piece of software you wanted without having to go through a gatekeeper. I am not a fan of censorship of any kind - after experiencing a world where I could download any application to any computer I own, I am now seeing that this situation has changed for the worse. In my family there are various devices and more of them have Apples logos on them and the newer ones only allow you to install apps through the Apple approved App Store.

And I am fine with the idea that Apple likes to protect its users by screening for malicious software but many of my readers tell me they are very uncomfortable with their censoring of apps which they feel are offensive, sexually suggestive and/or competitive. I have nothing against Apple but I have everything against any company which limits the choices of my readers after they spend their money to purchase a product.

Phone.com and the Next Phase of VoIP

June 14, 2010

If you want to thank someone for lowering your phone bill, you have a few options - you can thank the founders of Skype and Vonage or go back to the nineties and thank the many people at VocalTec who invented and popularized VoIP before anyone else even thought of it. Much of the reason TMC decided to launch a magazine titled Internet Telephony back in 1997 was because we saw the transformational power of the IP telephony gateways and software which VocalTec produced.

VocalTec co-founder Alon Cohen is a personal hero for what he did by literally changing the way the world communicates. Moreover, I am often called by patent attorneys who are involved in patent cases regarding technology which Cohen invented many years earlier.

Microsoft to Help OEMs with Windows Phone 7 Development

June 11, 2010

It is no secret that apps are the key to platforms and anyone who lived through the eighties remembers the massive advantage Apple computers had over PCs in the graphic design world because of programs like PageMaker and Quark Express. In those early days, if you wanted to be a desktop publisher using the PC you were forced to use Ventura Publisher from Xerox and while the program excelled at book design, it stunk at magazine layout.

Apple is obviously winning the app war in the smartphone and now tablet market and you may be wondering how Microsoft will get anyone to develop for its forthcoming Windows Phone 7 OS - especially since Silverlight is not really very popular. It seems the company will hire its own developer(s) to assist OEMs in developing apps to get things started.
