TelX and Cisco Ethernet Exchange and Bandwidth Predictions

June 4, 2010

New TMC video personality discusses the latest communications and technology news

Please join me in welcoming Juliana Kenny to the TMC news room and to the TMC team where she will be writing, editing and producing videos. Here is her first video which discusses the newly launched TelX Ethernet Exchange - which will allow carriers and enterprises to interconnect their Ethernet networks. This Cisco-powered service should be quite successful based on my early discussions with TelX customers as well as TelX executives.

FCC Exceptionalism and Supremacy?

June 2, 2010

A guest post worth reading from Scott Cleland, Founder & President, Precursor, LLC:

Read it on Precursorblog.com

Often stepping back to gain perspective, and to try and see the forest for the trees can be highly instructive. However, if one steps back to see the big picture of how this FCC is attempting, unilaterally, to change U.S. Internet policy, the view is surreal.

AT&T's new Data Plans Good for Wireless Investment?

June 2, 2010

As Gary Kim points out, AT&T will soon be revamping its data rates and plans for iPad users. Currently the plan is $30 for an unlimited amount of data per month. Going forwards, DataPlus will provide 200 MB of data for $15 per month (additional 200 MB chunks of data also cost $15), and DataPro, which provides 2 GBytes of data for $25 per month, with every additional GByte costing $10.

When advising entrepreneurs how best to explain their products to customers to minimize the barrier to adoption, I often say focus on the solutions your product or service provides. At the end of the day, we all have problems and will pay to have them solved. In case you doubt me I invite you to visit Doggie Doo Not, a service dedicated to pooper scooper activities on your property.

TMC Celebrates 38-Year Anniversary

May 24, 2010

How do companies make it through gut-wrenching industry and technological change without going under?

I do my best to wish every TMC a team member a Happy TMC Anniversary and as such the start date of all of our full-time members are in my calendar so I can be the one to send them this greeting (If I forgot you in the past - please accept my apologies). Last week I noticed that it was the anniversary of Nadji Tehrani, the company Founder & Chairman, my father and the person who decided to start this company in 1972. Funny, I never noticed his start date on my calendar before - and it occurred to me that this was TMC's 38-year anniversary.

Lightwave ONE Web Conference site now up

May 22, 2010

I have heard a number of positive comments regarding the addition of an optical event at ITEXPO this fall. Thanks for all your comments. As I mentioned recently, Lightwave ONE which stands for "Optical Networks for Enterprises" will be collocated with ITEXPO Oct 4-6 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.

As you likely know, we at TMC do our best to ensure we provide the most complete educational experience we can under one roof.

How Smart Products can Transform Health Care

May 22, 2010

Smart health systems have the potential to transform healtchare and weight-loss in a similar manner to the way electronic spreadsheets transformed corporate analysis and boosted the bottom line

One of the largest shifts in technology which has silently grown in importance in the world of electronics and technology is that of the product ecosystem - the group of smart products which interact with one another to provide a collective solution much more powerful, adaptable and flexible than any particular component of the ecosystem.

If you haven't kept up with the Smart Product Ecosystem or SPEC site on TMCnet, please do as this is the best place I know of to keep up with the market and its evolution. There are some fascinating stories I just received in this week's SPEC enewsletter (subscribe) and I will focus on the first one as you are free to check out the others at your leisure.

The first story from Professor Mary Cronin discusses MetaLogics, a company that developed a sensor to determine accurate caloric expenditure.

iPad Neck Update

May 19, 2010

Remember when I wrote about my painful iPad neck? Well one of the commenters, P.J. Tanzillo mentioned that his neck began to hurt and kept him from turning left - causing his friends to call him Zoolander. This reference is to a movie character played by Ben Stiller and I think the movie is pretty funny.

Google and Microsoft Telecom Failures: Lessons Learned

May 18, 2010

Let's start this piece by saying it is meant to be constructive and that people who live in glass houses should never throw stones. Unlike many writers, I am also the CEO of a media company which means I get involved in lots of product launches myself - sometimes they are from my company TMC and sometimes they are with partners or even vendors in the industry who use our services to help them launch. Over the years, I have failed in some of my launches - and I feel what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and in an effort to utilize my collective experience to help others, I figured I would write about some of the areas where Google and Microsoft have tried to change telecom and failed.

We will start with Microsoft who unveiled their Response Point phone system to me a number of years back and wowed me with all the features embedded in a system which cost only a few thousand dollars.
