Verbalizer: Bringing the Power of Google and Voice to Hackers

June 28, 2011

Google Voice Search for Desktop is good but it can be improved and that's the idea behind The Verbalizer from Breakfast which is an open-source development board designed to help even those who aren't extremely technical to build their own voice powered features into Google's new service.

The video below will give you a good idea of how it works and the project reminds me a great deal of the early eighties when I first witnessed a TI PC which had TTS built-in.

Avaya's Support Strategy Emulates Successful Cancer Diagnostic Systems

June 23, 2011

It is an unusual occurrence for me to receive a call from any company to discuss their support. Generally the media gets all warm and fuzzy about tangible things like new product launches – scoops and items you can put in the category of breaking news. Ironically though if you ask most companies what differentiates them from the pack, service and support is typically the most common answer. Yet, I can’t remember other companies asking me to meet their new head of global services.

Quad: The Death of E-mail and Cisco's Social Enterprise Ambitions

June 20, 2011

Quad moves to the cloud, has native Cius tablet support and offers better interoperability

Last week I took a train into the city from TMC’s Connecticut HQ to spend time with the Cisco Quad collaboration team – using Cisco telepresence technology and it was a fascinating look into the company’s foray into a post-email, collaborative enterprise world. First things first, I wrote about Quad and spoke with Murali Sitaram VP/GM of Cisco's Enterprise Platforms unit last September and since then Quad has not been talked about much in the media and has limited buzz in the market. Moreover, Cisco is repositioning itself – lightening up on consumer products meaning much of the company’s messaging has been in other areas of the market including launching consumer telepresence product UMI – something which should never should have gotten the green light.

Ericsson Telcordia Acquisition Analysis

June 14, 2011

TMCnet's latest addition to our writing team is Peter Bernstein and he has some excellent analysis of the acquisition of Telcordia by Ericsson. He believes in general the deal is a good move for Ericsson but as always, there are potential pitfalls which he details.

His intimate knowledge of the companies and space mean he mentions a number of points the financial analysts missed.

Top 20 VoIP Innovators

June 13, 2011

Tom Keating has a slideshow of the top 20 VoIP innovators of all time and if you want my thoughts check out the comment on his post. It is really well done and will take you back if you have been in the biz for a while.

Here is a preview- Polycom is on the list but I won't tell you where.

HTML5 Shines on New FT App

June 10, 2011

According to Ed Silverstein on TMCnet's sister site TechZone360, The Financial Times recently released a web app at app.ft.com based on HTML5 and in doing so has shown the Splinternet may be reversing course. As you may recall, I coined the term Splinternet in 2008 to describe the splintering of app environments on the web. Programmers currently utilize so much overhead to program for various environments that they take precious resources from differentiating their apps. The scenario is reminiscent of the hundreds or thousands of printer drivers developers had to provide with their software before Windows became popular and handled this task for the development community.

Thoughts From an HTML5 Evangelist

May 19, 2011

What is an evangelist? To me its someone who has the passion and energy about a topic - generally something new and they use their infectious enthusiasm to bring others around to their point of view. Such is the case with Joe Mazzeo founder of Crossfire Group and when it comes to HTML5 - he believes - rightly so in my opinion that it is the future of computing. His new blog on HTML5 is here - be sure to bookmark and check it often for perspective and expert analysis on the topic.

Tehrani's Train Fixed

May 17, 2011

It took about 45 minutes or so but the stuck train is moving for now and I can't wait to get off this thing and start recharging all my gadgets at the Avaya Press and Analyst meeting today in New York.

The conductor explained the reason for the stop was all the high tech electronics on the new train. Then again he may have said the problem had to do with trekking and hydroponics - like I said - you can't understand these guys - no matter how new the train.

My Day of Shooting Videos in Dallas

May 5, 2011

I am here at the Joule Hotel in Dallas, Texas where I met with over a dozen companies in the communications and tech space today. The mood is very very optimistic - there was more confidence than my last trip to Boston this past December. A few interesting items - I forgot my phone on this trip as I left it charging until the last possible second - and whoops, I forgot to take it. When I realized, I freaked out for ten seconds and then realized I had a tablet.

Since my voicemails get transcribed and emailed and I could use Skype, I actually didn't miss the phone.

3Jam Purchased - is it Skype?

May 4, 2011

The news just broke on TMCnet that 3Jam was purchased - and potentially by Skype. Interesting news as I have written about how TMC uses 3Jam at ITEXPO to coordinate our management team and communicate rapidly between groups. The beauty of the service is it allows you to text to a group and have a single virtual SMS number you respond to which forwards messages to everyone in the group.

Interestingly David Gurle of Skype - General Manager and Vice President of its Skype for Business unit is keynoting the next ITEXPO in Austin, Texas Tues, Sept 13, 2011 at 4:30 PM. It will be interesting to get his thoughts - of course by then the details of the purchaser will most likely be out.

Oh and one bit of concern is the news that the service will soon be shut down - hopefully the acquirer will continue it.
