Social Media is Mainstream Media

March 2, 2010

Here is my Publisher's Outlook which will appear in the March 2010 issue of Customer Interaction Solutions Magazine. I hope you find it useful

Last month I spent some time discussing how social networking will impact your company on search engines. In this issue, it is worth discussing how these technologies are changing marketing, media and sales.

Supercomm Dies, What it Means to Carriers, The Industry

February 8, 2010

Last week, Doug Mohney had the big scoop that Supercomm will be cancelled - he blogged it as a rumor which was subsequently confirmed by the TIA and USTelecom today. As a show organizer myself I get a lot of questions regarding what this news means to our industry. Rather than continuing to opine on a person-by-person basis, I thought it made sense to put my thoughts in writing.

Espionage via APT or Advanced Persistent Threat Widespread

February 5, 2010

Corporate and government secrets are currently being stolen on a grand scale - can anything be done about it?

If you are one of those people not easily rattled, please have a seat and get ready to shake. A new acronym, APT which stands for Advanced Persistent Threat is on the scene and by many accounts is an online threat which is virtually impossible to detect and even worse eradicate. Once your company is infected it seems hackers have access to virtually any and all information on your network.

Tech, Telecom: The Energy is Back

February 3, 2010

Communications, wireless, consumer electronics, cloud computing, virtualization -- in a turbulent market, it is good to be in technology.

Monster.com was one of the companies I considered to have a natural monopoly in the US job search market a decade ago. Amazingly, social media sites like LinkedIn and Craigslist are making Job sites less relevant and as a result Monster just picked up HotJobs for $225 in cash to shore up its decreasing market share.

A decade or so ago it was common knowledge that satellite radio would eventually make a huge dent in the business of traditional radio companies.

Patent Pooling Taking Off

February 2, 2010

I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company's profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Since my original entry, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony have signed up for the service.

Tools I Used at ITEXPO East 2010

January 26, 2010

I used a slew of technology at the show but two products are worth special mention. The first is the Flip Mino HD video recorder which excelled in low-light conditions and allowed me to take rapid and high-quality videos of the show. Thanks Cisco for providing me with this device.

In addition, I must say that without Verizon EVDO I would have been lost at this event and although thousands of people converged on the conference, the service allowed rapid uploads of multi-megabyte video files.

It is worth mentioning that many people commented that an iPhone was an obligatory accessory at the expo. In addition, I noticed many people standing near electrical outlets with thin white power cords which seemed way too short for adults.

So perhaps Verizon Wireless didn't see their network taxed too greatly by attendees.

Yes, there was wireless broadband but the WiFi literally choked during peak times.

ITEXPO East 2010 Miami a Great Success Thanks to You

January 26, 2010

A humble thank you to my followers who came out in support of ITEXPO this past week in Miami. Thank you conferees who braved a tough economic climate and came to the show. I also want to extend appreciation to the speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees at the show. In addition, thanks to our many partners who contributed greatly to the success of this week of events.

Startup Camp Telephony Launches at ITEXPO East 2010

January 21, 2010

What began as an idea just a few months back became a very well-attended conference which brought together startups and the financial community. The energy and excitement of this new event -- Startup Camp Telephony -- was incredible and I am writing this at 7:15 at night on a day when breakfast started at 7:30 AM.

It has been a long day and yet I sense from those around me that they could talk about all the new telecom opportunities available to them -- all night.

Videos below capture the beginning of Larry Lisser's talk - he kicked off the show and is a TMC partner in this conference. The next video is of Jamie Siminoff -- the keynote speaker who wowed us all.

Tom Keating Breaking Lots of News at ITEXPO

January 21, 2010

Tom has been on a roll covering the news yesterday - here are some links to his posts with commentary from me. I have been meeting with many in the industry for the last two days and would love to have written more but time hasn't allowed for it. Thankfully I have been posting as many videos as I can and sending other videos which don't reside on this site to my Twitter followers at twitter.com/rtehrani.

Use of WiMAX in Smart Grid Networks: It seems that communications and energy are merging - in ways we couldn't have imagined a few years ago.
