I’ve followed the IP communications business for well over a decade and in 1997 my company TMC decided to launch a publication called Internet Telephony to focus on what we believed would be a massive trend towards IP communications. At first we were ridiculed because there was a point in time when the technology was seen as a replacement for Ham radio only. It took some years but the industry caught fire and saw incredible innovation – even a bubble or two grew and exploded on the way to where we are today.

And as amazing as the market has been for 12 years or so, we didn’t see VoIP-on-a-stick become ultra-popular until a few years ago.

Due to great success achieved by TMC's customers, we have seen massive growth in our online community-building products and as a result, we are in the middle of a search for a product marketing manager - someone whose focus will be to articulate the value proposition of these products to a broader audience.

An established product-line, our keyword-based Global Online Communities (GOCs) and channels have grown to over 200 and many of our customers are coming to us to purchase more terms to help them with organic search engine rank, news search rank, community building, social network needs and numerous other reasons.

We believe we have the largest collection of sponsored, news-generated communities on the Internet and as a result it makes sense to focus more resources on this product-line so more companies in more industries can learn how such products can assist them in their growth.

These products are very dear to me as I knew in the nineties that every company would need someone to help them with content generation - text, audio and video. I realized every website had to eventually become broadcast TV stations and newspapers in one.

And now, that is exactly what TMC provides sponsors - a third-party content-generating machine which creates targeted news which in-turn brings a large, laser-focused audience based precisely on specific terms and concepts.

The benefit for readers is we continue to reinvest our resources - many of which come from this cloud-based community building and SEO model right back into more reporters, editors and designers meaning more targeted and in-depth news and analysis for people looking to make purchasing decisions.

What is most gratifying is the smallest companies choose to work with us to grow their brands and we also have major players as customers such as RIM and Alcatel-Lucent.

Obviously I am biased but I see this community concept as the most underestimated product on the Internet. Most people don't understand it.
















Facebook Extends its Mobile Platform

Although this is a long article - which I admit I didn't have time to finish  - it is worth a read because it gives you an idea of the Facebook mobile strategy and moreover relates it to the Google Android strategy and explains that Facebook can't take advantage of every opportunity and is opening up more so others can assist.

Hats off to Rob Jackson for spending the time it took to put together this quality piece. Here is an excerpt:

  1. Single Sign-On: Open an application and automatically enjoy the experience with access and perhaps pre-installed knowledge about you and your friends. Sounds a bit like signing into your Android phone with your G-Mail account and having your contacts, calendar, apps, etc… already at your fingertips and syncing up!
  2. Location APIs: If we know where you are and where you’ve been AND we know where your friends are and where they’ve been, there are some very interesting things Facebook can do from a social standpoint. Google tried some of them with Buzz and Latitude but weren’t that successful, but then again, Facebook is a company whose #1 strength is Social so perhaps they can do what Google did not.

Mobile Banking and Payments the Next Frontier

Without a doubt, one of the greatest new frontiers for technology is to take the banks and credit card companies out – the same way tech companies have taken out retailers, film producers such as Kodak, florists, record companies and more. Expect the major players new players in the space to be Apple, PayPal, Google and Microsoft – interestingly in the late nineties, a Microsoft exec gave a keynote address at a TMC expo and said that we will see mobile payments on the horizon – the prediction will and has come true but one wonders if the world’s largest software company can keep up in the race for mobile – let alone mobile payments.

I have already deposited two checks via mobile phone applications and although it is a weird feeling to rip up checks with your name on them once you are done – it does show how comfortable people will likely become with using their phone as a payment and deposit vehicle. After all, I felt weird the first few times I deposited a check into an ATM machine – many years ago.

TV End Game has Google Written All Over It

After a whirlwind tour of SATCON and Content & Communications World which took place last week, 4G World and Interop which took place this week and over a hundred meetings, I find myself ruminating over numerous discussions about where things are headed – in terms of content, technology, entertainment and apps.

There are macro trends which are intersecting and diverging and as much as I would like to say I have 100% clarity about it all, I don’t – but I do believe I have enough observations to share in order to get investors and innovators thinking about what the future will look like.

Over the last 30 years the rise of cable and then satellite radio shows consumers will pay money for content and in many cases for the ability to reduce the amount of commercials they consume.

But this idea is under attack from yet another trend emerging over the last few years.

Broadsoft Acquires Casabi

TMC's Juliana Kenny wrote a piece yesterday titled Broadsoft Acquires Casabi, Rumor or No? which points to a piece written by TMCnet blogger Peter Radizeski breaking the story on Broadsoft acquiring Casabi.

The company just confirmed the deal and had this to say:

Today BroadSoft signed a definitive agreement to acquire Casabi, a provider of cloud-based content and messaging applications for the consumer market, for approximately $1.95 million. Casabi’s hosted application enables family members to stay organized through SMS and by sending group text messages to any phone number (fixed-line or mobile), access voicemail, make real-time updates to a family calendar and share a network address book.

 Key aspects of the acquisition:

·      Comcast works with Casabi to develop and deliver consumer-friendly communications services to Xfinity customers, and this acquisition will build upon those customer efforts.





Thought Leaders Descend Upon ITEXPO

Kind of a silly term- "thought leader" but in every market there are people involved in setting the conversation... Those whose thoughts and ideas permeate the web and industry conversations. "Did you hear what so and so said? Can you believe he thinks this company sells junk products and won't be around in a year?"

Well you get the idea.

It turns out a number of the people in the market who I have personally followed for some time have joined forces on a blog called Voyces.



ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide Available

The ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide is here and if you are flying to the show - you may want to download it to your Kindle/laptop/iPad/netbook/smartphone or print it. I am on the plane now and we have the equivalent of a 300 baud modem's worth of bandwidth so I can't download it but as I recall it is over 100 pages and gives you a solid overview of the dozen conferences taking place next week.

In addition it shows you the exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors and which sections correspond to which technology.

I have this dream that I will have enough time to go through the directory and point to some of the interesting highlights in a blog post.

We'll see how that works out.

Here is the PDF and it is fairly compressed down to 5 Megs as I recall - we may be getting a higher res one soon as well in case you have the bandwidth.
