Tablet Update and Oracle Sues Google over Android

August 13, 2010

It's been a very busy tech morning so I spent some time assembling news you should be aware of before you grab your morning bagel and brew that pot of coffee.

Tablets, Tablets Everywhere

First off is an article from Harry McCracken at Technologizer discussing 32 tablets, slates and pads. Yes Virginia, there are alternatives to the iPad but surprisingly the iPod Touch isn't on the list.

DailyCandy Sweet on Android

August 11, 2010

One of the hottest email newsletters and Web sites for the ultra hip woman is DailyCandy and the site is the bible for many seeking advice on fashion, beauty, travel, culture and more. Specializing in providing information on popular cities like New York, Seattle and Miami, some trending articles are, Bored, Try Bora Bora and Picture Picnic Perfect.

The company like many others just launched a location-based application which alerts users to happenings like designer sales, spa deals and underground concerts.

Oracle's Larry Ellison Says Hurd Loss at HP a Huge Mistake

August 10, 2010

I spent some of the weekend covering the Mark Hurd resignation with a post titled Hurd's Resignation and HP's Odd Half-Decade where I discussed just how logic-defying the situation surrounding the ouster of this CEO is.

Some big news yesterday in the world of technology had to do with Mark Hurd and his resignation following a sexual harassment investigation where he was not found guilty. The woman allegedly involved with Hurd was a former contractor and according to a close source there was no romantic or sexual relationship between the two. What is unusual though is the company on a conference call characterized their relationship as "close" and "personal."

Book ITEXPO Now to Save Hundreds

August 4, 2010

Today is the last day to save hundreds or thousands on registration

We have been seeing an incredible stream of registrations for ITEXPO and related events and as is always the case, my team has done its absolute best to make this show better than ever. At TMC we take education extremely seriously and in a trade show market where companies regularly fold up and go away, we are proud to be putting on industry-leading events for 24 years.

What I have personally learned over the years is if you provide the best education to your customers with a wide enough array of topics, your attendees walk away very happy.

Support for Net Neutrality Wanes in Tech Community

July 28, 2010

I just came across an article worthy of passing along from the Technology Liberation Front, a group which is focused on helping to reduce the amount of regulation imposed on the Internet and technology. Aside from a typo or two (I make them as swell  ) the excellent article titled Amazon.com Switches Sides on Net Neutrality focuses on how tech companies who once supported net neutrality are scared to death of being caught in the crosshairs of an administration gone wild with overregulation.

The article begins by discussing how Amazon's Pail Misener has for all practical purposes switched sides on the net neutrality issue as discussed in an editorial for CNET. Some of the points in the post have to do with net neutrality being a solution in need of a problem.

Altering Language to Achieve Government Objectives

July 26, 2010

Language is obviously crucial to describing and understanding the world around us but did you know the particular language you speak can influence how you see the world as compared to speakers of other languages? This weekend I had a chance to read a fascinating article in the Wall Street Journal on the topic authored by Lera Boroditsky who is a professor of psychology at Stanford University and editor in chief of Frontiers in Cultural Psychology.

What makes the article so interesting is the analysis of speakers of different languages and the differences in how they interpret the world. For example, 1/3 of the world uses language with absolute directions for space as opposed to relative ones and as a result the speakers of such languages are able to perform navigational feats scientists once thought humans were incapable of.

Comunicano: Your Influencer Relations Company

July 23, 2010

Many of you in the communications and technology spaces already know Andy Abramson as he is a well-known and influential blogger. But what you may not realize about Andy's company Comunicano is it is a major player in the world of influencer relations. By capitalizing on a strategy which Andy describes as the boulevard of communications, his company works with his clients to ensure their news turns into stories which are told and retold throughout the web and other media outlets.

As you can see from the inverted pyramid above, Comunicano segments the disparate audiences necessary to push a product along the influencer road to ultimately convince followers to purchase.

ShopVisible on Mobile Commerce

July 22, 2010

There has been and will continue to be a massive increase in mobile commerce as consumers are becoming more accustomed to shopping online and mobile devices are proliferating and providing bigger screens and better interfaces. Personally I have been amazed at how easy it is to use a number of sites such as Amazon to purchase as I am walking while walking by doing a quick search and check-out without the need to enter in a great deal of data.

There are many hundreds of thousands of retailers globally or more who must grapple with developing online interfaces which allow customers to make rapid purchases regardless of device. ShopVisible LLC is one company devoted to helping retailers migrate seamlessly to the mobile web and I did get a chance to test one of the implementations they performed for a customer and thought the results were good in that they gave consumers a chance to find what they wanted in a non-cluttered manner.
