How Smart Products can Transform Health Care

May 22, 2010

Smart health systems have the potential to transform healtchare and weight-loss in a similar manner to the way electronic spreadsheets transformed corporate analysis and boosted the bottom line

One of the largest shifts in technology which has silently grown in importance in the world of electronics and technology is that of the product ecosystem - the group of smart products which interact with one another to provide a collective solution much more powerful, adaptable and flexible than any particular component of the ecosystem.

If you haven't kept up with the Smart Product Ecosystem or SPEC site on TMCnet, please do as this is the best place I know of to keep up with the market and its evolution. There are some fascinating stories I just received in this week's SPEC enewsletter (subscribe) and I will focus on the first one as you are free to check out the others at your leisure.

The first story from Professor Mary Cronin discusses MetaLogics, a company that developed a sensor to determine accurate caloric expenditure.

Priceline: Revenge of the Dotcom

May 21, 2010

Some of you may know TMC and Priceline have our headquarters in the same building at 800 Connecticut Avenue here in Norwalk, CT and as I drove into the garage this afternoon I spied an Audi R8 in a parking spot which belongs to Priceline. I am a huge fan of this car and have blogged about it before. It is the Audi answer to the Porsche 911 in case you are wondering. But it looks better and is quite mesmerizing in person.

Google Buys GIPS - Here's Why

May 18, 2010

When it comes to enabling technology, Google's new mantra is its better to be needed than liked

I first met the company called Global IP Sound around 2002 at TMC's ITEXPO and Pulvermedia's VON expos. What differentiated the company tome at first was the company's ability to power wireless VoIP calls over PDAs - specifically Compaq iPAQs via a low-bandwidth codec. As you can imagine, at the time, the codec needed to not only be low-bandwidth due to the slow wireless connections but also had to be super-optimized because processors in PDAs at the time were not powerful.

OnStar Saves Woman's Life

May 17, 2010

I am a huge fan of any paradigm-changing technology and OnStar - the GM invented service which integrates a car's computer and a remote call center is certainly one of these achievements. The service does lots of different things like provide turn-by-turn navigation but perhaps the crowning achievement of the service is the ability to connect to the call center when the vehicle's sensors indicate there has been a collision.

A few days ago, a couple was forced into their car at gunpoint near Chicago and a thief forced them to drive to a Currency Exchange to cash a check. On the way to the Exchange the woman was able to hit the OnStar emergency button on the remote control which alerted the police.

Dialogic and Veraz Merge

May 12, 2010

Dialogic and Veraz Networks just announced their intent to merge and the news has many implications for the numerous markets the companies play in. Nick Jensen, CEO of Dialogic had this to say about the merger, "By combining Dialogic's proven expertise in application enablement for voice and video with Veraz's leadership in voice, data, session control, security, and transport, we will be creating a company with innovative products that will enable our customers to unleash the profit of video, voice and data for 3G/4G networks."

Dialogic has been a voracious company having rolled up much of the communications development market over the years. By integrating once fierce competitors NMS and Brooktrout/Cantata the company has taken on more and more share of market.

D-Link, Much More Than the $99 Router Guys

May 9, 2010

Let's face it, it's an exciting time to be in the consumer electronics and technology business as consumers and businesses are buying better and faster devices while simultaneously upgrading their bandwidth connections including routing and switching technology. One of the major vendors in these spaces is D-Link and recently I sat down with the company's US management team to hear how they plan to grow and evolve into the future.

In a discussion with Nick Tidd - President, Dan Kelley, Senior Director of Marketing and Les Goldberg, Media Relations Manager I got to learn a tremendous amount about how the company is looking to move upmarket without losing its core heritage as a provider of SMB and consumer technology solutions.

Tidd explained, "We are more than your $99 router guys and we have been working to build-out our product portfolio and partner program over last few months." Perhaps the most important part of a strategy of moving upmarket is a chassis-based product and not surprisingly the company recently announced the xStack Chassis Series DGS-7200E.

For Apple, It's the Simplicity Stupid

May 8, 2010

How Apple's dead simple interfaces and walled-garden approach are wreaking havoc on the competitive world of technology and entertainment

If you have any interest in the future of computing read this post from Charlie's Diary which explains why he thinks Apple is blocking Flash from many of its newer devices. In a nutshell, Flash allows cross-platform development and Apple of course doesn't want to see this being done. There are other cross platform tools available for the iPhone at but let's not go there at this moment.

Tripwires Helps Reduce IT Compliance and Security Challenges

May 7, 2010

Did you know there were more data security breaches involving credit cards in 2009 than the past four years combined? Moreover the effort companies are putting into solving this problem is generating massive amounts of data which isn't able to be effectively analyzed? To get an idea of how organizations can cope with the challenges of dealing with the security of confidential information and compliance I sat down with Gene Kim, CTO and Co-Founder and Matt Hixson Director of Product Operations at Tripwire a company which focuses on helping companies solve these problems.

As budgets are being cut Kim explained that companies need situational awareness regarding what can put them at risk.

Amazon's Kindle Embraces Facebook and Twitter

May 3, 2010

The e-reader which really popularized the category is under attack from the iPad and is fighting back - will these social media updates make a difference or is it too little too late?

When it comes to the tablet/e-book reader market, innovation is the biggest differentiator and while Amazon's Kindle is doing much better in the market than I first predicted, Apple is doing an even better job in this space courtesy of the iPad which is now up to 1,000,000 units and counting. Oh and did I mention 12 million iPad app downloads to date? To combat the threat from Apple, Amazon needs to innovate like crazy and they have done so in this new release 2.5 which has lots of innovative features such as integrating social media into book reading so you can now share book passages with your followers on Twitter or Facebook.
