Smart Buildings remind me of the CTI/VoIP Opportunity

January 15, 2010

For telecom veterans who were active in the communications space in the nineties you remember the excitement the industry enjoyed when Microsoft and Novell entered the telecom markets with TAPI and TSAPI protocols to interconnect communications systems with computers. The CTI or computer telephony integration space was born when the OS companies realized that by enabling telecom systems to be more tightly integrated with computing, they could in effect start to generate revenue by having new telecom systems built on their open platforms. Prior to this time, any sort of integration cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but CTI solutions based on desktop computers could be built for $10,000 to $15,000.

I couldn't help but think about this market as I read an article on connected buildings from Erin Harrison which resides on the Smart Data Center community.

Google's Energy Ambitions and Smart Grid Implications

January 12, 2010

As I research Google's move into energy, I become fascinated by the idea that Google's influence on our lives may just be beginning. Sure the Google Toilet (video) may not be a real product but analysis of Google's potential in the smart grid market, coupled with the company's Android operating system leads at least one analyst, Jon Arnold to see a bright future of collaboration between smart devices in the home and the electrical grid.

I am sure we can all imagine connectivity between thermostats and a variety of electronic devices in the home which work together to reduce energy consumption. With global arctic temperatures turning arctic -- you may not be convinced global warming is real.

Amtrak adds WiFi to Fight Disruptive Free Bus Internet

January 12, 2010

Years after
European train operators and the airlines, Amtrak has decided it was time to add WiFi to its trains. Bus companies have found a way to sell seats for as little as $1 between New York and Boston and provide free WiFi while the train generally sells seats which start in the $50 range and as you might imagine, this fierce competition has meant the union-operated trains are losing customers and they need to fight back.

So it is a bit surprising that the new WiFi service will initially be offered on the company's fastest and most expensive trains - the Acela Express.

One would suppose this is an initial trial of course and eventually even more competitive pressure will force the company to roll out wireless service across all seats at a low rate.
