Have we finally broken the barrier to same day delivery?

During the dotcom boom, Webvan and Peapod were going to change the world and when things went bust and both companies had to deal with the realities of massive infrastructure and overhead with little to no sales by comparison. Peapod got picked up by Stop & Shop and Webvan imploded, and is now just a Wikipedia page.



Fast forward over a decade and Amazon has made lots of noise about same delivery service.

Google Leverages Home Page to Promote Nexus Tablet

Google has been "different" for over a decade because the company always resisted overt advertising seen throughout the web. Through the entire pop-up era where so many websites capitulated and ran ads for security cameras and other items, Google stood almost alone.



But as you can see from the page above - click to enlarge, Google has now decided to use its premium real estate - the home page to run ads. The first ad is for the company's Nexus tablet.

Sure, the company has been making sponsored links look more and more like regular ads over the past few months and years - this trend isn't new for the company. Moreover, we have seen the company promote Chrome and other software products in the past - most of these however have been free products.

For those people who said the company would become "evil" shortly after becoming a public company - you may be right (assuming you consider this sort of behavior to be bad." For those of you who said the Motorola Mobility acquisition was "stupid" well perhaps you are wrong if the company rings up massive sales as a result of perhaps the best marketing strategy on the internet.

Will public backlash be so great that the search leader is forced to change course?









Smartphone Margin Decreases versus Beats by Dr. Dre

Recently I touched upon some of the differences between the automobile and tech spaces and in the past I have mentioned how Apple’s ability to price its products without discounting implies a stronger brand and moreover helps it sell in its retail stores which offer the same prices as online.

This doesn’t mean that Apple can sit still because we can expect an almost infinite supply of focused competitors.

Sure, many of them like RIM and Nokia are in decline and are retooling their product lines almost perpetually to become competitive. But beyond these examples we also have a slew of Japanese consumer electronics companies who have seen the golden age of TV come and go… Now they are focusing on exporting mobile devices to make a living.

Dunkin Donuts App Lets You Pay More Quickly

Allowing you to utilize a virtual credit card, the new Dunkin Donuts app available on iOS and Android allows you to send "gifts" electronically through text and Facebook for example. The app also functions as a nutritional guide and allows you to find the closest store.

While there has been much chatter about the Starbucks relationship with Square, Nigel Travis, Dunkin's CEO thinks that there will be a mix of payment options and he sees a future where voice integration plays a role in future apps.

Dunkin outsourced its app development to Digitas among others and Travis touted the company's ad budget - likely referencing the fact that this app will be getting some serious publicity in the future. The company expects to order 600 new stores globally in Korea, the west coast of the US, Latin America and "Even Europe," he says.

Although the popular east coast US coffee chain is late to the mobile app game, studies have shown that coffee shops whether they are Starbucks or Dunkin have loyal customers - who more than likely haven't switched loyalties because of the ability to order online via mobile device.

The upshot of the news is that it's more convenient to get your morning java fix regardless of the store you frequent and that mobile devices continue to boost productivity beyond the workplace.








TMC San Jose Video Interviews 2012

A few weeks back, my team and I went to Silicon Valley, CA to interview a number of companies in the technology and communications space. Officially the event is called the TMC Roadshow/Executive Editorial Open House. The goal of the event was to get a handle on what was new and exciting. Here you have a list of most of our interviews - some were video, some written and some haven't been processed yet.

There was a good mix of companies represented from cloud communications to cloud storage, testing, wireless, mobility and even webRTC.

Best Buy's Best Choice is to Evolve

In Order to Compete with Apple, You Need to BE Apple

The idea that Google, a company with an incredible business model, allowing them to potentially profit off every query they process on the web had to go out and buy a hardware company to get into manufacturing would have been unthinkable before the launch of the iPhone and iTunes App Store.

Consider the facts - since the launch of the iPhone in January of 2007, Apple stock has increased by just under 600% while Google has increased by about a paltry 20% in comparison. Click on the chart below to see the details for yourself. 



But lo and behold, we are now comfortable with Google in the hardware market and Microsoft has even launched its own Surface tablet.

Beyond Amazon Price Match - What Best Buy Must Do

Recently I was in a Best Buy store while traveling because I needed three items which retailed each for $99. I needed one right away but the other two could have waited. So while in the store I decided to do something novel. I picked up all three items and went to an employee in the store and explained I would rather buy all three of these items right now but I can’t see paying retail when Amazon sells this product for $73 each.

Attention Social, App and Search users, YOU are the Product

A little understood notion is that for those people using free services and apps, you are the product and generally speaking the advertiser is the customer. The exception is when no ads are shown and confidential information isn’t disclosed to third parties but instead the provider of the service gives away a free version in the hopes of getting users to upgrade to a paid one.

Recently the Wall Street Journal ran an opinion piece where they suggested that the EU lay off of its antitrust investigation into Google because the search service used by 90% of Europeans is helping consumers.

Why Facebook Needs a Phone

Facebook as the dominant social network is becoming the replacement for the phone. Nowadays in fact it is fairly common to use Facebook as the primary way to stay in touch with others – especially among those under 30. The point here is that the phone is becoming the Facebook communicator.

And with mobile adoption continuing ta a blistering pace – many people have multiple mobile devices in fact, Facebook should be sitting pretty, right?
