Comverse Gets Social at MWC2013

February 28, 2013

Comverse showed me their Share solution at Mobile World Congress 2013 which allows carriers to deliver a Facebook app giving the user a portal into their subscriber account. Once you enter the app, you are prompted to enter a phone number and are subsequently sent a text message allowing you to get a code which enables authentication.

At this point you can check your account balance, send notes to customer care and more. The operator benefits as well because they can mine the user likes and preferences allowing them to determine for example if they may be a candidate for a bundle or special offering.

How Steve Jobs Even Transformed Our Views on Management

February 9, 2013

Steve Jobs was such an amazing entrepreneur - even calling him the ultimate visionary doesn't seem to describe accurately how amazing he was at reinventing numerous business categories. Like so many creative visionaries, early in his career he lacked the political and people skills which many people believed were necessary to run a company effectively.

When he was "pushed out" of Apple it was seen as a normal incident - CEOs were pushed out of companies all the time as past Apple CEO John Sculley has said. In fact Scully spoke just over a week ago at StartUp Camp7 collocated with ITEXPO Miami 2013 and gave the inside scoop on many important events which transpired between him and Jobs over the years.

Sheldon Adelson Continues to Give Back

February 8, 2013

Sheldon Adelson was the founder of the COMDEX trade show and early in my career his team was gracious enough to work with me to promote the first magazine I published named CTI. I have always been impressed by his business skills – he ran the largest show in the US and when he sold it and stopped his involvement it went downhill fairly quickly and eventually collapsed.

At the peak of the show in the late nineties in Atlanta, GA, TMC gave away well over 10,000 magazines from a 20x30 booth – there are few other shows – even today where you could achieve such a feat. As I recall, we probably could have given out even more but we ran out!

Facebook Enables Free VoIP Calls for U.S. iOS Messenger Users

January 16, 2013

Facebook launched free VoIP calling for U.S. Facebook iOS Messenger app users. Here's the problem though. Almost no one uses the Facebook Messenger app - they use the main Facebook iOS app.

What to Make of Facebook's Search Announcement

January 15, 2013

According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, graph search is another pillar of the Facebook ecosystem along with news feed and timeline. The idea behind this initiative is to allow easy access to the massive store of big data Facebook has amassed about so many people. Using the new search feature a user can search for friends of friends who are male who live in New York or for all the photos they have liked. The free form query-based system is the secret sauce here.

Flexible Samsung Screens and Jim Cramer's Mistake Round Out Tech News

December 20, 2012

Samsung to show flexible screens are coming to a smartphone and tablet near you but what still needs to be worked out is how to get multicore processors and batteries to bend along with them. Moreover, what happens when you bend them too far – do they just snap, pouring the guts of the battery onto your lap or dinner plate? We still have some time on this tech but the progress is promising. Can’t wait to see it (and bend it) at CES.

Amazon Prime Instant Video app for iOS is out

and in my testing on a 4th generation iPad it worked well. Some complaints remain that for non-Prime users the experience isn’t that great. I for one would like to be able to download video on the app – there is a download area but no instructions as to what is downloadable or how to download.

Alcatel Lucent says providing video to devices is a great new revenue opportunity for carriers.

WebRTC: The Phone meets the Web

October 19, 2012

We have seen the multi-billion dollar communications market get disrupted as the phone met the IP network. In the video below Phil Edholm describes how with WebRTC, the phone meets the web. As he describes, even though IP communications has been around for more than a decade, there hasn’t been a fundamental change in how we communicate. We still hang our phones off servers which allow communications to take place.

Banks, The Latest Threat to Groupon and LivingSocial

October 18, 2012

If there is one constant these days it is that your competitors tomorrow are going to come from the most unlikely of places. Apple came from nowhere to unseat RIM and Nokia in mobile phones, Amazon is becoming a major force in tablets, Google’s Chrome and Android products have made it a major force in software and operating systems.

But the examples above are technology-based so they shouldn’t be too surprising as we have come to expect tech companies to be quick to enter new markets. What could portend a future trend however is Bank of America’s move into the deals business.

I'm Too Sexy For Consumers: B2B Tech IPOs Are Hot

September 24, 2012

B2B Tech is hot once again thanks to a string of consumer social IPO losses and B2B successes

In the fickle world of consumer purchasing behavior it is tough to predict what trends will last. Few things seem to be predictable in the market beyond their desire to amass more devices powered by Apple's iOS.

There are spectacular examples of consumer companies which were here today and gone tomorrow – perhaps AOL, Yahoo! and MySpace are the best examples of entities that rapidly became irrelevant because consumers moved on.

And while Facebook has done an infinitely better job than MySpace of keeping its social network sticky and relevant, it still has become a textbook definition of investor loss and IPO blowup.
