Spikko Brings Multiple Numbers and Recording to Mobile Phones

While there are a number of companies who can add phone numbers to mobile phones via VoIP, Spikko takes a different approach. The company allows a mobile device to have a single SIM and multiple local numbers with global call-recording added as one of its optional services. The company supports most countries but there are around 50 primary ones.

I spoke with company representative Ron Barak about the company's differentiators and he mentioned that they have their data center in the Amazon cloud in Ireland and from there they allow phones to work as local devices on multiple networks. They have negotiated great rates for customers - 2-3 cents per minute per call, $10/month for call recording and $5-$6 per number.

Aculab has been an innovator in the telecoms space for decades and most recently they've impressed us with their cloud offering as well as their Applianx AP Gateway. The company was early to cloud - perhaps one of the first in the telecom space to embrace it. Even before the big Silicon Valley companies all vying to be the CPaaS leader.

The company's cloud can do voice, messaging, multilingual TTS, voice biometrics and fax. What makes it frankly better than some of the clouds which are run by IT and not telecom people is their deep and somewhat extensive knowledge of telecom signaling and telephony protocols.


Streann OTT Hopes to be the Evolution of TV

"The revolution and evolution of the golden age of entertainment is happening right now," according to Giovanni Punzo the CEO of Streann Media. The company touts itself as the multiscreen next-generation monetization platform for delivering linear TV, VoD and proprietary  interactive services to end-users anytime and anywhere.

The idea behind the platform is fairly simple - allow customers to provide Netflix-like services with localized content. The solution has a built-in ad platform, app editor builder and allows the full distribution and monetization of content.

In addition, the company has a provisional patent on a new way to show video ads - they can be seen in split screen. This is a replacement of the pre-roll which many people including us have grown tired of.

The Miami based company is doing very well in the Latin America market and its HQ in Miami likely doesn't hurt.

8x8 has seen its stock triple in the past five years as they move upmarket and take share from telecom hardware players. Interestingly, this increment is the exact same amount of time its been since ShoreTel acquired M5 to provide cloud solutions to customers.

This is what we said at the time:
Cisco may now be forced to buy 8x8 and Avaya will likely make a move as well. This move could even push Vonage to go after the SMB space. Mitel is an interesting question - they have leading edge tech but a troubled stock to use as currency.



How ITEXPO Has Transformed into THE Communications Event

Recently, we have had a great deal of feedback from attendees commenting that ITEXPO in Florida (Yes, Florida, in February – and airfares are literally dirt cheap) has evolved to become THE communications event – for the Americas and beyond. We are humbled by the comments but the credit goes to my team who tirelessly looks to improve each event with fresh new content.

An analyst told me once that the show is so full of information that you run around like a chicken with your head cut off, except he said it Yiddish which made it sound more exotic.



I wasn’t sure at the time if it was a compliment but in a way it is the testament that the show has so much important information that you really need a team to cover it all.

Recession Coming? Fusion Says Things Are Getting Better

The telecom market was once said to be a great predictor of recessions – in fact it’s been said in the industry that back when all phones were wired, the first companies to know bad times were coming were the RBOCs or regional Bell operating companies such as Pacific Bell, etc. I couldn’t help but think of this when I spoke with Russell P. Markman, President - Business Services at Fusion. Especially in light of "economic downgrades from the IMF.

Fusion has a broad range of products and services from fax to conferencing and SIP while they target carriers, call centers and businesses with their various offerings.

Dialogic Plunges into Apps with PowerVille

By technology standards, Dialogic is a veteran – having been established in 1983, the company has supplied communications infrastructure used by carriers, enterprises and developers for many, many decades. The New Jersey company enjoyed the benefit of providing solutions which could be paid for by arbitrage. In the late eighties and nineties, Dialogic boards allowed companies to build computer-telephony solutions which used off-the-shelf computers to compete with custom-built hardware solutions from manufacturers of telecom equipment. Even though Dialogic boards were not cheap, solutions based on their products cost far less than alternatives on the market thanks to the ability to leverage PCs and servers.

How exactly is the WebRTC Revolution Different than VoIP?

There are many parallels between the disruption being caused by WebRTC and what happened in VoIP. During the IP telephony days, Dialogic was one of the key infrastructure providers to carriers, call centers and companies of all sizes. Likewise in WebRTC, Dialogic is playing an interconnecting role and the company helps WebRTC scale and moreover provides the tools to add value to web communications.

The reason I bring this is up is because Jim Machi of Dialogic gave a keynote at WebRTC Expo in San Jose last year which you may have missed.

Fenero Aims to Disrupt Cloud Contact Center Pricing

Cloud-based contact center solutions have been priced fairly uniformly in the past… You pay per seat and feature. You want to add more people or features such as analytics, etc. and you pay more. Some vendors offer an all-inclusive solution of course meaning the only variable is the number of seats but regardless, the model has been fairly static for the past few decades – starting back in the nineties when the term ASP was what we used to describe the space.
