Danny Windham, Skype CEO Keynotes ITEXPO East 2010

January 21, 2010

The day you never get fired for buying "X" are over according to Windham who gave a keynote speech at ITEXPO East 2010 in Miami where he touched on how open-source has been responsible for reducing margins and costs in the communications space. Using Nortel as an example he explained how the value of the the company's enterprise assets dropped from a value of about $100 billion ten years ago to less than a billion dollars today. Open-source as he mentioned is one of the reasons for this drop in value and coincidentally, Digium is now ten years old according to Windham.

One point of interest is that the company has a few new devices coming out and moreover hopes to evolve to become a fables  fabless semiconductor company which leverages their proprietary technology to maximize the efficiency of wireless spectrum.

Conan O'Brien Mentioned in ITEXPO Interview

January 16, 2010

As my readers know I spent a great deal of time interviewing (with a bunch of help from my editorial team - thanks team) speakers and other participants at ITEXPO and related events for the express purpose of giving attendees and others the chance to get the perspective of some of the best and brightest in the industry. To liven things up, I almost always ask a question which I hope will add some spice to an interview.

When I asked Mike Campbell, Director of Product Management, Solutions, for Sigma Systems, to make an outrageous prediction for 2010 he decided to make his about Conan O'Brien - check it out - pretty funny.

Smart Buildings remind me of the CTI/VoIP Opportunity

January 15, 2010

For telecom veterans who were active in the communications space in the nineties you remember the excitement the industry enjoyed when Microsoft and Novell entered the telecom markets with TAPI and TSAPI protocols to interconnect communications systems with computers. The CTI or computer telephony integration space was born when the OS companies realized that by enabling telecom systems to be more tightly integrated with computing, they could in effect start to generate revenue by having new telecom systems built on their open platforms. Prior to this time, any sort of integration cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but CTI solutions based on desktop computers could be built for $10,000 to $15,000.

I couldn't help but think about this market as I read an article on connected buildings from Erin Harrison which resides on the Smart Data Center community.

Tehrani at Winter Olympics

January 13, 2010

After ITEXPO in Miami next week, I come back home, witness TMC's move into a new headquarters, head back down to Miami for a bar Mitzvah and then finally head to the Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. While there I will get a chance to witness the Nortel/Avaya IP network which powers the games and I will also have a chance to see the many innovations associated with the event. Many are outlined in an excellent article by TMC's Brendan Read.

I am excited to be at the games - it is an opportunity not everyone gets and I look forward to watching as many of the events as possible and reporting on the happenings.
