SIP Trunking Providers

December 10, 2009

One of the areas of IP communications which is seeing tremendous growth is SIP trunking providers and suppliers and the reason is simple - the technology saves companies money and increases their telecom flexibility and ability to boost productivity. The move to SIP however is more challenging than just plugging a wire into a box. You need to be aware of security, quality and compatibility issues. But to buy legacy circuit switched equipment today is generally suicidal for a career so SIP trunking has to be on your immediate radar.

Digium's UK Connection - Asterisk Conference Sells out Twice

December 8, 2009

Digium, the Asterisk Company announced they recently inked a deal with Dorset, UK ITSP VoIP Unlimited to connect Digium's Asterisk-powered Switchvox platform with the carrier's SIP trunking solutions.

Bill Miller, vice president of product management for Digium, commented: "We chose VoIP Unlimited to provide services to the UK channel based on their established position in the country's ITSP market and their experience with Asterisk. Digium's seen strong interest in Asterisk and Switchvox by UK customers recently as they look to save money while gaining VoIP features and integrating voice with other business communications. We think VoIP Unlimited is an ideal partner for bringing these benefits to UK businesses."

Allow Free Markets to Solve the Newspaper Problem

December 3, 2009

The controversy between newspapers and Google has been going on for quite a while and recently Rupert Murdoch has threatened to pull the content from his various companies such as Fox News and Wall Street Journal off Google and instead allow Bing to have potentially exclusive access for a fee. In my opinion if enough content leaves Google and goes to Bing it will have an impact on Google's business model.

Moreover, Google's ability to index the world's information for free is coming into question as a result of Murdoch's ranting. To Google, the idea of having to pay for something they have free access to today is horrifying.

ITEXPO East 2010 Miami Update

November 17, 2009

I just came across this web page with some important details on ITEXPO. I mentioned the keynoters in a recent post and I still think they are one of the best combinations of thought leaders in our space. Google Voice, Sprint, Digium, Polycom, Skype and Verizon Wireless are some of the companies you will hear from at the show.

In addition there are a full eight conference tracks you cannot find anywhere else:

Sagem-Interstar Adds Fax Support to Microsoft Exchange 2010

November 15, 2009

There has been a premature rush to declare fax dead and the reality is fax is alive and while it is declining, it is still a strong business for companies helping the transition from fax to fax over IP and especially T.38. Yes, just as IP is transforming communications, the newspaper and television businesses, it is changing the way companies fax. And as you probably know, one of the primary reasons companies use this medium is to send legally binding documents quickly and efficiently.

One of the companies who have chosen partners wisely in the past is Sagem-Interstar, the Montreal based provider of fax solutions has had deep integration with Cisco's products for a number of years and this relationship has obviously been good for the company.

Open Source

One of the biggest trends in tech this last decade has been open source and while you may not know this, I was a UNIX (the Linux precursor) system admin at TMC back in 1982 or so and I am a big fan of this OS which is reliable, stable and the strong basis for cost-effective solutions in a number of fields.

Speaking at VoIP Conference and Expo 2009

October 27, 2009

I really excited to speak at the Illinois Institute of Technology Rice Campus for the VoIP Conference and Expo 2009. This will be my first time to this event and interestingly the third time in recent weeks in which I am in Chicago instead of Vegas for a show. Maybe the city didn't get the Olympics but they certainly seem to have gotten all the shows - WiMAX World, Supercomm and now this event.

Getting back to my talk - I am moderating a Keynote Panel titled: Are the "Bells" ringing for Carrier VoIP?

TMC Adds Important New Business Development Position

October 22, 2009

I wanted to alert my readers to some exciting news happening at TMC. As you likely know TMC is among a handful of media companies growing at a time when the media landscape is in dramatic decline. As you might imagine this growth is primarily online. Over the last decade and especially in the last few years we have focused on building online communities (Channels and GOCs) for customers who sponsor these areas as they rapidly attract focused decision-makers from around the world.

Supercomm 2009 Update

October 20, 2009

I am here in Chicago for Supercomm 2009 where I have numerous video interviews and meetings set up. I will be attending a few receptions and the first one is this evening in celebration of Genband's 10-year anniversary. We have a booth at the show where we will be filming live interviews with industry executives and thought leaders and we are excited that TMC's Paula Bernier will be participating in the conference portion of the event. Genband is participating on the panel she will be moderating and will be sending out a press release which I feel objectively describes the session.

Sprint's Big Bet - M2M and More

October 19, 2009

Speaking with Sprint's Wayne Ward you come away amazed at the potential ahead for wireless carriers in the burgeoning machine-to-machine or M2M space. Just what exactly is M2M? It is simply machines communicating with machines. Quite often this interaction is to satisfy the needs of a person, corporation or system - for example when an automobile senses a mechanical problem and signals the manufacturer for a wireless diagnostic which determines the car needs service and subsequently alerts the driver.
