Apple Tablet Update

Interesting news from ITEXPO last week was buzz that the much anticipated Apple tablet device is floating around in Asia and has been spied in 5, 7 and 10-inch formats. One of my sources tells me they think the devices are prototypes and a single one will emerge. Apparently the screen technology is amazing.

XG Technologies Interview at ITEXPO East 2010

I had a chance to have a brief interview with Chris Whiteley, Director of Business Development at XG Technologies. He gave me an indication of what the company is up to and where their future lies. One point of interest is that the company has a few new devices coming out and moreover hopes to evolve to become a fables fabless semiconductor company which leverages their proprietary technology to maximize the efficiency of wireless spectrum.

Skype Takes Share, Upgrades iPhone App

Skype is now the largest provider of cross border communications in the world, by far according to a new report from TeleGeography. According to the research company, the rate of international calling has been growing at a steady compounded rate of 15% but in the last few years the slope has decreased as a result of the recession and of course, people switching to Skype.

In other Skype news, the company recently upgraded their iPhone app with some minor tweaks which sadly don't include push notification.

Apple Tablet Optimized for Books, News

It seems based on numerous reports that the Apple tablet will be optimized for books and newspapers meaning we may see some very innovative screen technology when the device is released. Why? Well e-readers generally don't use the same screens as laptops due to the battery life issues as well as long-term readability. And Apple is not one to generally follow the pack so we can expect a full-color, gesture-based reader which for all practical purposes will be an iPhone on steroids.

Perhaps most interesting is that if the technology is very good, it can potentially be applied to future iPhones and iPods meaning extended battery life for these devices and perhaps better readability.

ITEXPO East 2010 - Wish You Were Here

I am here at the Loews -- the show hotel at ITEXPO East 2010 in Miami and when I checked in I got a branded key from Digium/Asterisk to remind me to stop by the open-source communications leader's booth later this week. My team is feverishly wrapping up the last-minute details and we all can't wait to host you at the show. It should be a wonderful week of learning, networking and finding new and innovative products and services.
