NYC or France, Where Would You Locate Your Company?

New York City – whose moniker is “The City that Never Sleeps” has pushed to ensure your company never sleeps and in today’s connected and digital economy, this may be the difference between success and failure.

If you had a chance to choose a western region to locate your company and you had the choice of just New York City or France, which would you choose based on recent events? Moreover, if you had to make your decision largely based on recent government actions – let’s the last few weeks or so, which would you choose?

In other words, we are going to put aside tarriffs, currency, minimum wage, taxation, regulations, the availability of a solid slice of pizza, baguette or the availability of fine wine.

As we reported on Christmas Day of last year, France has a new law which allows people working for companies with 50 or more people to negotiate to not work after normal business hours.

Without further ado, here are my predictions for the new year!!! What do you think? 

 

  1. We will see major financial problems begin to take shape at hardware companies without a solid cloud strategy.
  2. Trump’s new offshore tax rules will bring a flood of cash to tech companies – much of this will be shared via dividends and buybacks but it will also find its way into M&A as well as new product development.
  3. Smart factories with low cost energy will make the US a major force in manufacturing but this prediction will need to take 10 years to play out and thanks to IoT and robotics, the factory of tomorrow will need 1/10th the workers of today.
  4. Chinese cell phone provider Huawei or Xiaomi will become a serious thorn in the side of Samsung – producing low cost phones for hundreds less than the Korean maker and selling them in large numbers outside China.

Why AT&T Should be Encouraged to Purchase Time Warner

At first glance, allowing AT&T, a large, powerful telephone company to purchase the invaluable media assets of Time Warner makes one wonder if the resulting organization will be too rich and powerful. The answer is, if executed properly - hopefully better than AOL's attempt, it will be a whopper of an organization which has a limitless list of valued assets such as CNN, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, HBO and TNT.

Keep in mind, AT&T has multiple modes of distribution from wireless to wired and satellite. So really, even at second glance, it would seem we are putting together an organization with so much market power, competitive companies will be slaughtered.

Regulators will likely force AT&T to divest some assets or agree to some stipulations which keep the market from being excessively harmed - but let's discuss what the new AT&T could do in a worst-case unconditional buyout scenario.

You can already stream unlimited DirectTV on the AT&T Wireless network at no additional cost, giving the carrier an advantage over other wireless carriers.





Wireless Carriers Racing to the Bottom

It had to happen eventually - a price war is taking its toll on telecom equipment providers because their customers won't spend money in some cases unless they can see an ROI of a billion dollars fairly quickly. This comment is attributed to Verizon from a trusted source I can't reveal.

In my recent meeting with Sprint, they explained how they are racing to the bottom by giving away more for less with their Unlimited Freedom plans. Obviously, these are my words, not theirs.



In addition, the Sprint ads on TV are amazing - they say their network quality is within one percent of Verizon yet a lot cheaper. When put in those terms, its very tough for Verizon to keep charging a premium for their service.

T-Mobile is obviously part of the challenge as well - they've been giving away more for less and increasing their value over the years.

Ericsson just put our its numbers for the quarter and an unexpected 14% drop in sales cratered the stock by 20%.









BroadSoft's Big Opportunity: Contact Centers

After spending more than a decade selling solutions which allow carriers to resell UC solutions, BroadSoft has decided the call center is its next big opportunity. By acquiring Transera, BroadSoft is positioned well to provide cloud-based call center solutions to not only customers but carriers themselves. In addition, these solutions will be scalable as BroadWorks is known for scaling to million so users.

In my meeting was Prem Uppaluru, who founded Transera – the cloud contact center company which BroadSoft acquired.

Top 10 Mobile World Congress Trends #MWC16

I’ve just returned from a whirlwind event for the telecom market known as Mobile World Congress and I’m still amazed by the amount of optimism I’ve just witnessed. It would not be an exaggeration to say this level of excitement about the future of telecom hasn’t been seen since 1998. Although it has great food, the city of Barcelona has a pretty poor economy.

Accuris Networks Helps Stich Together Cellular and WiFi Networks for Carriers and ISPs

This past week saw the launch of a plethora of new Apple devices – specifically two new phones which will shoot and edit 4K video as well as a new iPad Pro which sports a massive 5.6 million pixels. Moreover, the phones have 12MP cameras which replace the previous models which had 8 MP. That’s a 50% increase in potential pixels in photos. What this means, is even more demands on wireless broadband networks as these phones hit the market.

Comcast Business Seeing Nice Broadband Growth

While much of the talk about Comcast in the media recently has involved their M&A aspirations as well as their consumer brand, the real story at the company is Comcast Business. Recently I met with Mike Tighe, Executive Director of Data Services of the company who told me the business-focused area of the organization is growing at 21% a year and is taking share.




He went on to say the company has the best footprint in fiber optics – this is important as he sees customer bandwidth needs increasing 30% a year. Moreover, and this is interesting for those who are concerned about the sheer size of the company, they are an insurgent, not an incumbent in competing with DSL.
