OK, a few of us had some wet clothes but other than that things have gone well so far.

Drummers kick off event

GENBAND Chairman David Walsh takes the stage. "Digital life is interactive. We are constantly interacting with it. None of it can happen without secure digital networks." Will companies, lead, follow or get run over? They have to decide he said.

General discussion about how many new domain names are registered... How many emails are sent - how much of it is spam (hint: almost all), how many people are on the Internet, etc.

He segued into a discussion of OpenTable and Uber - apps which don't use people but they facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers for restaurants and car services. 1 in 8 married couples met online he continued.

He made a funny telecom joke - if you got hear early, you could use SinglesAroundMe to find a date and then use Uber to get a car and OpenTable for a restaurant location - this is the new triple play.

He also discussed WhatsApp and Viber - he uses and loves both. He mentioned these OTT services are great but not ubiquitous. GENBAND is developing tech to allow these services to be federated.

Discussion moved to WiFi - he discussed the law of wireless gravity - bits will find their way to lowest cost infrastructure as fast as possible. "Spectrum is constrained and expensive. We can use math and science to make it more efficient but it isnt as effective as fiber which you can deploy more of to add capacity."

New York will become a carrier by converting phone booths to wireless hotspots - they will be able to become an ad agency and deliver content to various geographies and generate revenue. Hotels are also telecom carriers because networks are built where people gather and vice versa.

Discussion of how much heat is generated by data centers - they are power an water hogs (for cooling). Intertech is their partner and they provide more efficient cooling solutions.

We are beginning to see the start of cyber-warfare they also have an investment in Mandiant - the company finds and remediates problems. Also they are working with ISC8 to help find faults before they happen because quite often you find a threat 40 months after the intruder got into your network.

Devices are more valuable than ever. We want to help you [carriers] become a vital part of this evolution.

Charlie Vogt President and CEO takes stage

Discussion of the pace of change, GENBAND success - growth, speed of growth and forecasts of future growth. 80 of top 100 service providers are their customers. They are a hug part of Verizon FiOS, BT, Shaw, NTT, Telus and a number of other carriers. At CIBC and University of Texas at Austin - they are providing significant telecom infrastructure.

We are watching a video about how GENBAND empowers service providers and enterprises - by boosting scalability, efficiency and profitability - "Making Networks Smarter."

$100M annually in R&D is invested by the company. Small cells, WebRTC and cloud are a few areas of these investments.

Verizon CTO Tony Melone takes stage starts off - tech can build a better future... Together with partners we will take on societal challenges, healthcare, public safety, education, etc. Gave example of a wireless telepresence robot to allow remote students to learn. Also, "Make the world more sustainable and improve healthcare and remake entertainment with state of the art infrastructure which delivers superior experience consumers want."

Apps have to run on secure, reliable, available infrastructure - this is the vision at Verizon. We strive to deliver this day in and day out. 4 platforms.

4G/LTE - largest footprint in US and world... We achieve speeds faster than advertised today. US is ahead of world in 4G - thanks to our competitors trying to catch us.

IP - important in everything we do

FiOS - our Quntum services offers 300 mbps to consumers - soon we will offer 1 gbps if they need it. Reminds us we constantly underestimate tech needs/growth.

Cloud: Terremark: this is an important part of our portfolio.

We built 4G on 700 mhz spectrum and will put AWS to use soon. We need more spectrum and will go out an get it as needed. He doesn't understand why some want to limit telco access to spectrum.Explained the company is using the spectrum it acquires - it doesn't shelve it. It is investing billions in spectrum build-out in-fact. Won't launch before it is ready- it is not trivial to build a nationwide VoLTE/wireless VoIP network.

Video is 50% of global traffic on backbone some estimate as high as 90% in not too distant future.

Gave shout out to GENBAND, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and others who allow them to provide more cost-effective services.

Moved to smart-home discusion - FiOS - PON - 18M homes, mid-30% penetration roughly. 150 HD channels and reminded us up to 300 mbps to the home. They will migrate the backbone from 2.5 Gbps to 40 gbps and when this happens, they can provide 1 gbps to home.

In their broadband home router - they want to add intelligence so new devices can connect quickly and then connect to the cloud without user set up. They want to mak it easier for consumers to get access to the latest technology.

They see FiOS more as a business play - allows them to enhance their investment in the asset. They are being aggressive in moving from copper to fiber. Will accelerate this move based on what they learned in Hurricane Sandy.

"Cloud is real and growth continues... Means different things to different people." They focus on enterprises - secure connections to cloud with a breadth of services. Managed apps and services...

Thinks their platform will be ideal for partners to build upon. This is how they want to help solve the challenges in the world.

He then showed a video - some of it is below:

We enable so much of what is possible with innovation - we shouldn't forget how important we are - we need to continue building trust with customers - provide reliable networks etc.

M2M 40% growth - 50B devices by 2020 to be connected - partnership with QUALCOMM, Mphase - make it easy to take non-traditional devices - connect to Verizon Wireless network.

How can we make tech make the lives of our customers better and improve societal issues like healthcare.

Tim Wagner of Samsung takes the stage to discuss the company's transformation of the last three years - how the company has become a smartphone leader from a feature phone leader... Said no other company has done this. Largest electronics company in world... $200B organization. Selling 1,500 devices per minute.

Talked about how their commercials made their competition seem like the device was for old people - basically talking about Apple and the ads where Samsung users wet to the lines where Apple customers were waiting to buy.

Now discussed how much their social media presence has grown. Also - discussed hoe 500+ customers launched the Galaxy S4 phone at once. Around 120-125M Galaxy devices have been deployed. This doesn't count TVs appliances, feature-phones and other devices.

Discussed Samsung SAFE for enterprise - connects device to MS Exchange and ActiveSync, on device encryption, VPN support, MDM support from AirWatch etc.

Says they have systematically defragmented Android - makes the devices consistent across carriers and form factors and price points. IT manager can test one device and add SAFE - not each device.

26 devices run SAFE today.

Gave case study examples of successes.

AA has 16,800 Galaxy Note devices - allows American Airlines to provide same level of service to top First or Business Class. Their business is transformed - no more manuals or paper tickets.

Helping customers with tech implants - heart issues - allows them to know if they have heart problems through app on phone. First tablet approved for cockpits in US. DISH Networks - reducing four-hour window, use Galaxy Note to track installers and reroute them based on success at install. Allows them to check reception from top of ladder - don't need to go back down to test repeatedly. Can upsell and gt an electronic signature. Takes a four-hour window to potentially a 90-minute window - changes their business.

65,000 unit Galaxy win at HP.

Moved to discuss Samsung Knox - starts from metal of device to software... Allows work/life balance - keeps you from losing personal photos when enterprise wipes your device.

When turned on - looks for Samsung OS - if it doesn't find one, it will not boot up. Worked with NSA on this - security enhanced Android. Any unapproved apps are deleted/killed. General Dynamics is selling these to the government. They decided to focus on Government realizing that other regulated industries will follow.

Also have a container for business and personal use.

We have the most number of smart devices that are out there he said.
education, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality and other vertical solutions are their focus going forward.

Samsung and GENBAND collaboration - enhance productivity, anytime, anywhere access to data - creating "Smarter Office." Discussed better business value.

He gave an example of allowing you to tap a phone to a tablet and being able to transfer a all from your office to your mobile device so you can listen to your conference call on the way home and spend more time with your family. Then explained they think GENBAND is the ideal partner to help them provide all this value to the market.

Samsung has an Oprah Moment - everyone in the audience gets a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 - now that is amazing!

This concludes the live blog for now - I am about to prepare for my talk in a few hours - right after the lunch break.

As wireless markets globally move to 4G, Altair Semiconductor has targeted this newer network standard with a single-mode line of chips which cost less and use less power than mult-mode solutions which have to grapple with 3G and older standards. As consumer electronics devices become more price-competitive, choosing a streamlined solution means OEMs/ODMs can reduce their costs and pass part of the savings on to customers allowing more inexpensive solutions to be marketed.

The big news for the company at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona was the release of a new chipset for LTE-A, the 3800/6300 FourGee line which can download at 150Mbps and upload at 50 Mbps. The chips support carrier aggregation and a wide frequency band span of 400-3800MHz with 6 concurrent LTE bands for both primary and diversity antennas, enabling global band combinations. There is further support for VoLTE and HD-voice as well as interference cancellation an peripheral interface support for a wide variety of applications from consumer electronics to M2M.

The company hopes it becomes the go to source for connectivity in an "internet of things" world and spokesman Matthew Krieger (pictured) brimmed with excitement about how their solutions are replacing competitors in the market. Moreover they see larger competitors selling 3G-disabled solutions as a sign they are on the right track.

Other recent achievements have to do with certification on the networks of Telefonica and Verizon, meaning ODM/OEM customers no longer need to get their products certified themselves.

Krieger continued to tout current success in the market and spoke of future opportunity which they believe will be quite bright as 4G markets in India and China begin to emerge.

There is an insatiable demand for content of the video variety. It is so great in fact that sports networks like ESPN are getting an outsized portion of your cable bill. The network in fact gets more than $5 per subscriber per month regardless of whether you ever watch their networks. Cable and IPTV companies for their part are in quite a pickle as more subscribers drop their service altogether for OTT competition. The solution to the problem is painful for many but will eventually be taking sports programming and breaking it out into tiers according to Gary Kim who writes on TMCnet. He explains the first step these companies are taking is adding a $3 fee for local sports programming. At some point ESPN will have to be dealt with it seems.

We have all heard content is king and - remember that until recently Netflix took a massive hit to its earnings due to its lack of leverage in negotiating with content providers. The solution? Develop more of your own content. Exactly what the company is going to do with some of the $400 million in debt it just raised.

TMC’s Erik Linask had this to say about the news: “Companies like Netflix and Hulu are proving that the longstanding dominance of mainstream networks may be in jeopardy. The combination of a modern business model, high-quality programming, and multi-device capabilities, present a compelling case for today's connected viewer, potentially disrupting the competitive landscape to the benefit of the consumer.”

To summarize: content is still king but consumers will soon have the ability to pick from infinite monarchs.

And as more of this content is streamed to various devices, networks have become more clogged than ever. The good news is the emerging H.265 standard which was just approved by ITU is twice as efficient as the current H.264 standard deployed on most tablets and smartphones and data centers pumping the content out.

Amazon today deployed news which is wonderful for the video market with the launch of Amazon Web Services Launches Amazon Elastic Transcoder a solution which leverages the company’s cloud to obsolete the entire market of small transcoding companies playing in the video space. Of course your definition of “wonderful” will vary based on where you sit in the food chain.

Can we make a prediction about the future of video? It seems we are taking baby steps to a la carte programming or at least packages which give consumers some additional choices when it comes to sports and other areas. Investors believe there is money to be made in content production which means the Netflix deal may spawn others. Content will still be king but it gets tougher to stand out when there seems to be endless consumer choice in programming. We have seen Yahoo try the video production game on and off without a great deal of success – perhaps they just did a poor job of it or maybe times have changed. One thing in favor of all these video production entrants is the new connected TVs and cheap consumer electronic devices allowing TV sets to easily display video from the Internet.

In 1979 the Buggles launched the hit song Video Killed the Radio Star which at the time seemed to make sense with the advent of MTV which chose this song as its very first video to play. But over the years it seems radio too has evolved being transmitted from space and traveling over the Internet for example. So radio actually never died. Let me clear up the confusion from my younger readers - MTV was a network which at one time actually played music television. But I digress – I wonder if the title of the song should have been “Video is the Recurring Star.”

I really didn’t have an answer except to say a post will be forthcoming on the matter. Here is that post.

Mr. Adelstein will deliver a keynote address on “Investing in America’s Wireless Future” at Super Wi-Fi Summit on Wednesday, January 30, at 9 a.m. EST.

Recently leaving government work for the private sector, Adelstein is now president and CEO of PCIA – The Wireless Infrastructure Association, the trade association for the telecommunications infrastructure industry. PCIA provides expertise and support in the areas of advocacy, communications, events and education to its members: the carriers, infrastructure providers and professional services firms that own and manage more than 130,000 telecommunications facilities throughout the world.

Adelstein previously served as Administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service, a position to which he was appointed to by President Barack Obama. Adelstein also previously served as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission from 2002 to 2009, a position to which he was appointed by President George W. Bush.

We hope to see you at the conference in Miami the after next to hear him speak. It should be a great talk.

Yesterday I discussed how xG Technology scored with a big $6M win and today the company has announced Cornet Technology has entered into an agreement with xG to resell $5M worth of the company’s products to the government and DoD.

Cornet Technology, Inc. is a privately-held concern which designs, engineers, and manufactures a wide range of advanced command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) solutions targeted at U.S. and international defense and aerospace agencies.

The deal covers part of an end-to-end two-way video streaming solution for vehicles that is currently under development.

For a company which so many predicted wouldn’t make it – the potential for $11M in sales in two days is pretty impressive. Still, while the news of this partnership is great for company backers and employees, it isn’t a done deal quite yet.

A few other points. If the company is successful selling to the government via this deal - it could do exceedingly well selling to other governments around the world and to more US agencies as well. Also, M2M could be a market which can benefit from the company's solutions.

On the negative side of the ledger is the potential for ubiquitous WiFi coverage and Super-WiFi technologies to make the company's solutions less valuable over time.

The most controversial company I have ever reported on has to be xG Technology. They have a wireless solution which uses unlicensed spectrum in an efficient manner in order to allow service providers to provider service without needing to purchase costly licensed spectrum. Never have I been subjected to repeated scathing comments than in my writings and video posts pertaining to this company.

Bottom line was I saw a working demo and reported on it. Detractors argued the demo I saw was not scalable under any circumstances.

Now xG has just reported $6M in new orders from PMC Associates based in Hazlet, New Jersey, Communications Marketing Southeast based in Dallas, Georgia and Mobile-One Communications based in Venice, Florida.

This is quite a big win for a company that has been accused of selling bogus solutions by many people. To be fair when xG first launch the company made some claims about their technology which seemed so unbelievable that it turned out they weren’t correct.

In 2 weeks Super WiFi Summit will be held in Miami, FL, close to the company’s HQ. If I catch up with them there it will be interesting to learn if xG sees the opportunity to use white spaces as competitive or complimentary to what they provide.

One of the most amazing turning points in technology advancement has been the US Government’s decision to allow unlicensed spectrum to be used in the form of WiFi. Instead of taking the short-term gain of revenue via spectrum auction, it was released for free for everyone to use. As a result, cable companies can compete wirelessly with 4G providers and they need no private spectrum to do so.

The point is, unlicensed spectrum has truly revolutionized technology and productivity. Think this through – even the companies who sell “competitive to WiFi” 4G service are benefiting from WiFi. Consider carriers often wheel in large-scale WiFi equipment to sporting events and other venues because of cellular capacity issues. AT&T has over 30,000 WiFi hotspots thanks in-part to acquisitions like Wayport who added 20,000 hotspots and Superclick Networks.

My thoughts in Nov 2008 on the AT&T Wayport acquisition and Optimum WiFi analysis

Moreover, Verizon for its part allows on certain plans for its 4G devices to be used as wireless hotspots at no additional charge. They benefit from the increased 4G usage which must be paid for of course.

The challenge we have today as a technology industry is the government is essentially broke and borrowing almost 50 cents on every dollar it spends. There is obviously an incentive to maximize revenue during these fiscal cliff negotiations and an area to look for it is unlicensed spectrum in the white spaces world.

As a proponent of this spectrum affording the world an unlicenced “Super WiFi” of sorts, I obviously am concerned.

You should be too.

To learn more be sure to read Carl Ford’s comments and attend this virtual event (with top speakers from the FCC and more) on Incentive Auctions/actions and be at Super WiFi Summit January 30-February 1, 2013 - Miami, Florida.

Some time back I commented on rumors of a Sprint takeover by Google and at the time many thought the idea was crazy. Fast forward a few years, tens of thousands of Android devices and a Motorola Mobility acquisition later and now Google is reportedly in talks to launch a wireless service with a number of companies including Dish Networks. As you may recall, Steve Jobs too wanted to launch a wireless network and if Google is seriously exploring this option this means Apple has to be doing the same.

The next frontier of advertising revenue for Google is mobile and if carriers and Apple decide to lock the company out of this lucrative market (even partially), then they have no choice but to own the wireless pipes. Now the question of spectrum comes into play… Is T-Mobile too expensive? Is Sprint worth another look? Assuming the rumors were true of course.

All of this shows the future for all successful companies is to own everything - at least they think this is the case. Like Apple which owns chips to distribution. This is counter to much of what we saw in the PC space in nineties when Dell bought off-the-shelf components and cleaned Compaq’s sales clock in the process. At the time Compaq was meticulously designing components at high-cost to extract a bit more performance than what you could buy on the open market from common component suppliers. Dell showed them and others that it made mores sense to become a marketing machine and sell computers based on commoditized parts.

But the target is Apple. Amazon designs its own tablets because of Apple. Microsoft has stores because of Apple. Almost every phone maker has its own music store because of Apple. Microsoft Surface was a response to Apple.

If Google does indeed want to get into the wireless business beyond the WiFi hotspots it offers around the country, it is probably because they heard Apple was about to do the same.

Mobile is not your father’s tech space.

Over the past two years, profits from the top eight mobile vendors has risen from $5.3 billion to $14.4 billion for a whopping increase of $9.1 billion and all this while over 67,000 people have been laid off in the technology. How is this possible you ask? I posited a similar query two months ago regarding Corning’s shares losing value – even while they supply Gorilla Glass to much of the booming mobile market.

FierceWireless sums up some of the companies shedding jobs in the wireless space just this year alone.

Google/Motorola shed 4,000 jobs but these were anticipated. Motorola like others on this list is losing share to Apple and more recently Samsung.

RIM shed 5,000 jobs and is betting the company on Blackberry 10 which is due out in Q2 of 2013.

Alcatel-Lucent has let go of 5,490. Similar to Nortel’s troubles, the company has suffered from a seemingly perpetual slowdown in carrier spending and competition from Asia.

Nokia has shed 10,000 jobs which makes sense as they lost the leadership role in smartphones to Apple and Samsung.

Nokia Siemens Networks has shed 17,000 jobs and faces similar challenges to other carrier equipment providers.

AT&T, Verizon and many other carriers around the world are benefiting tremendously from the massive spending on wireless connectivity from its customers and yet this money is not reaching the majority of equipment providers or device manufacturers. It is worth mentioning Cisco is certainly a beneficiary here and they will now get into the small cell market, making life even more difficult for existing players in the space.

In the past they haven’t been immune to cuts though as they recently laid off 11,300 people.

Sony too announced plans a while back to lay off 13,000 workers. This is the company that invented the mobile audio space, has historically produced some of the lightest and sleekest notebooks on the market and with its SonyEricsson division really led the way in mobile phones for a few years.

The challenge is the wireless market has a lack of competition for now. Apple and Samsung are so dominant the other players have to eke out a living in the shadows. Samsung has done an amazing job using technology and a plethora of devices sizes and shapes to fight this war. Another challenge – the aforementioned organizations are so large they can afford to design and in Samsung’s case, manufacture their own mobile chips. What this means is typical suppliers to a thriving market like Texas Instruments have trouble making a living. This is why TI announced they too are laying off 1,700 wireless employees… A staggering amount for an arms supplier in a wireless arms race.

This is a brave new world for technology – when the PC market was thriving there were hundreds of companies providing computers – some which you put together yourself and others which were bare bones models at discount prices. But now, prohibitive marketing budgets, need for a patent arsenal and carrier relationships have made it difficult for a no-name company to become a market leader overnight.

Google and Amazon are exceptions but they can afford to lose money in mobile for as long as they need to in order to further their core businesses.

Instead, the growth seems to have to come from the aftermarket space – meaning ecosystem plays. Apps makers, hardware add-on companies like Square and case making are the angles to play to generate big money in wireless. For traditional hardware arms suppliers like NSN and TI, mobile is not your father’s tech space.

Living through hurricane Sandy in Connecticut maybe eight miles from the shore shielded me from believing the damage would be as bad as it was. Much of the state – by the Long Island Sound especially, got slammed. By now you have likely seen the photos and videos of the damage. Especially lower Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey.

Back to Connecticut, I may never have seen so many trees down in my life and many cities near where I live had over 70% of their residents without power immediately following the storm.

Wireless service has been on and off. I noticed T-Mobile seemed to have coverage issues in Stamford and AT&T in Old Greenwich didn’t allow data connections a few days ago. To help keep customers informed, a number of carriers put out statements about the capacity of their networks in Sandy-affected areas.

Like everyone else, wireless operators have been repairing their buildings and equipment. Verizon says they have 97.2% of their Sandy-affected cell sites in service. In severely impacted areas, like Lower Manhattan, they say while wireless service has yet to return to normal levels but coverage is good.

The company explains that they continue to deploy mobile disaster recovery and emergency network assets to fortify their network and our back-up power equipment, including permanent and mobile generators, are keeping cell sites and other network elements operating.

They do warn that telecom and residual flooding issues continue to be a factor. In closing they explain as the day progresses, they expect the numbers of operational cell sites to continue to improve.

In related news, AT&T has teamed via a roaming agreement with T-Mobile in New York and New Jersey to ensure callers connect to whichever network is most operational in their area. I am wondering if Verizon could be added to this agreement when a user has an LTE-capable device.

Sprint too has been very vocal about their superior efforts during and after the storm.

I have often referred to patents between large tech firms as mutually assured destruction as any of these companies can sue others with a slew of patent infringements at once, counting on a few to be upheld by a court. And this is what happened with Apple and Samsung where the Korean phone maker and tech giant was found to have willfully copied Apple’s trade dress meaning the look and feel of the device – among other things like pinching to zoom.

Jason Perlow at ZDnet points us to a good video from Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman, on the topic of patents and trademarks in the food industry. It is boring but useful if you want to learn more.

Samsung just lost big, really big to Apple and already there are many people reconsidering their Android purchases based on a survey I have seen as well as what I’ve learned speaking to people in the market for phones.

Let’s just say Samsung is very angry – not just because of the $1,049,343,540 in damages the company owes Apple. To make the situation even worse for Samsung, Judge Lucy Koh on Tuesday scheduled a hearing for Dec. 6 at 1:30 p.m. to consider Apple's request to ban the eight devices: the Galaxy S 4G, two versions of the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and the Galaxy Prevail.

Samsung thinks patent law has been manipulated to give one company – Apple a monopoly on a rectangular shape with rounded corners.

It would seem all is well in Apple-land except for the fact that Samsung is a monster in terms of consumer electronics making everything from semiconductors to screens, TVs and computers. They make lots of components for Apple in-fact. We can likely expect this relationship to continue coming to an end over time but more importantly, Samsung will likely come out swinging hard, very hard.

Apple has just angered a real giant.

What we know so far is officials said Samsung has been preparing “all measures for all scenarios” to fight Apple in 50 patent disputes in 10 different countries. Moreover, the Korean giant says it will sue Apple immediately if it releases LTE devices – exactly what we might expect to see in a new iPhone rumored to be announced in a few weeks.

It is common knowledge that Apple popularized the music player the touchscreen smartphone and tablet. Microsoft, Nokia and others have attempted to play in these spaces before Apple and have failed miserably.

Moreover it is absolutely accurate that Eric Schmidt used his board position at Apple to see the future of Apple products and subsequently launch Android and the OHS. Apple deserves to be upset because they are being copied and Schmidt’s behavior is more or less corporate espionage in the worst case and immoral at best.

But mutually assured destruction is what it is.

There is a real risk the tech space will now be more concerned about legal issues than about innovation going forward. Moreover, the smaller companies will have an incredible advantage if they fly under the radar long enough to come up with new and innovative technologies while the large companies devote considerable resources to legal pursuits.

None of this is good for tech innovation… There is the expression “being dead right” which comes to mind.

To learn more about tech and telecom patents be sure to attend the SUITS tech patent and copyright conference in Austin Texas, October 2-5, 2012 – collocated with ITEXPO.

A few weeks back, my team and I went to Silicon Valley, CA to interview a number of companies in the technology and communications space. Officially the event is called the TMC Roadshow/Executive Editorial Open House. The goal of the event was to get a handle on what was new and exciting. Here you have a list of most of our interviews - some were video, some written and some haven't been processed yet.

There was a good mix of companies represented from cloud communications to cloud storage, testing, wireless, mobility and even webRTC.

Paul Singh, Chairman of DocSync details his company's innovative cloud syncing service

You'll also notice there is a strong mix of company sizes from some you might not of heard of to the largest of the large. There was a good deal of optimism in the air and it is exciting to see how the tech space is still moving and shaking in an economy which has been challenging for many sectors of the market.

Have you ever heard from someone that they don’t like Starbucks coffee but they like the experience at the store so they go in, sit down and buy the coffee? It is quite a testament to the world’s largest coffee chain that they are able to lure in customers who don’t like their premium-priced primary product but are instead attracted to their comfortable seating areas and atmosphere replete with cushy couches and free WiFi.

The point here is people buy things for subtle reasons they may not consciously realize. But how you may ask does this translate into tech and cars?

Recently Rob Enderle , President and Principal Analyst, Enderle Group wrote about the patent lawsuit between Apple and Samsung and related the pace of automotive innovation and competition to what is happening in the mobile space.

And he got me thinking about the similarities as well and moreover how the segmentation in one space can potentially be translated into the other.

Brand/Image: For many, Mercedes and BMW are the only cars they will purchase because they are considered top brands but are also priced reasonably enough when compared to a some even higher-end product lines like Bentley or Maserati. Both German manufacturers have done an incredible job in automotive design and performance and to some degree safety. BMW’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” moniker generally tells you the car is more performance oriented while Mercedes is more slanted towards luxury. Audi is similar to Mercedes in its brand positioning.

Of course Apple comes to mind when looking at the top brand in the consumer electronics world. Microsoft has become a strong brand for the older generation – perhaps most like Cadillac. It should be noted this isn’t a great place to be. Nokia may be closest to Chevy or GMC in that its brand was widespread and oftentimes a strong player in the less expensive areas of the market.

Performance is an important part of the automotive market and most car brands have their halo car. Chevy has the Corvette which has helped breathe excitement in the brand and Dodge has the Viper. Nissan has their GT-R and Lexus has their $375,000 LFA made of carbon fiber. BMW has an entire line of performance cars while Mercedes has their AMG brand and Audi has their S and RS cars which boost horsepower and other performance attributes over their less boosted counterparts. For example the A6 generates 211 horsepower while the S6 which looks quite similar on the outside generates 414 hp.

The PC market has followed the automotive space with processor speed and type being akin to engine size, torque and horsepower ratings. For example, a Dell XPS 8500 is promoted on the company’s website as costing $749.99 and for that price you get an Intel Core i5-3450 which is rated at up to 3.5 GHz. For an additional $150 you can upgrade to an i7-3770 processor which has speeds up to 3.9 GHz and is “Dell Recommended” whatever that means.

The tablet space is led by Apple which likes to keep things simple so speed hasn’t been as much of an issue. Over time and iterations of mobile products, Apple has increased its processor speeds and even gone from single to dual-core and quad-core processors but they don’t focus externally on the hardware to a great extent.

The one exception and where the company generates gobs and gobs of money is memory. Apple will charge you a $200 premium for 48 GB of memory while you can buy a SanDisk Cruzer 64 GB USB Flash Drive for $34.99. Then again, it is far simpler to understand memory size than it is to comprehend the difference between an Intel i5-3450 and i7-3770 processor.

Apple has simplified the tablet and smartphone purchase to the point where spec differentiation is tough to pull off beyond memory size and number of cores. This is likely one of the reasons Samsung and others have had to focus on increased phone screen sizes to differentiate themselves from the iPhone.

Safety is an important area for some in the automobile market and most people think Volvo when they think of cars which survive crashes best. Have you noticed however that Volvo hasn’t set the world on fire with its sales? The analogous area in mobility is likely security and guess how many people were concerned about moving from very secure RIM devices to less secure iOS and Android devices? Hint: not too many.

Environmental concern is an area where Toyota has shone this past decade with its Prius. The crossover with tech is the “greenness” of the companies themselves. Recently in fact Apple had to change its stance on the EPEAT environmental standard listing as a result of consumer backlash. It was a rare misstep for the consumer electric brand with a virtual halo around it.

Utility is another reason people purchase their vehicles. How many minivan owners do you know who overlook the chunkiness of their vehicle’s design because of the convenience and/or cost? SUVs are cooler looking and so are crossovers – at least to most eyes but they usually require a lot more cash.

The tech space is similar in that you can spend almost nothing for a clunky, ugly and slow laptop or netbook but a state-of-the-art ultrabook could cost you two times as much or even more! An HP 2000-410US Notebook PC will run you $409.99 while an HP ENVY Spectre XT Ultrabook 13t-2000 will set you back about a grand.

Price/Economy is another area of differentiation for car companies. By economy I am referring to fuel by the way and the point here is the low-end of the market buys their vehicles on a tight fuel/monthly payment budget. They can’t necessarily afford to buy a hybrid car so they settle for a low-cost car which doesn’t weigh so much and which has a smaller engine to conserve on fuel.

The analogous area in tech is the 7” tablet where prices are lower than the iPad. RIM popularized the smaller-sized tablet but their prices were similar to or higher than Apple when they first launched. It took Amazon to come out with the $199 Kindle Fire to shake up the tablet space and attract the lower-end of the market. Apple countered with a $299 iPad 2 which was a brilliant move.

Still, this is the area where many tablet makers will be forced to compete – at least that it unless Apple releases its rumored tablet of similar size.

The mobility space for its part has its own areas of differentiation.

Enterprise sanctioning was perhaps the most important area which has become fairly unimportant. One of the strengths of the Cisco Cius table for example was its centralized app control. The market responded with crickets – not because CIOs didn’t want to exert control over apps downloaded on corporate devices but because users could care less what devices their enterprise sanctions.

Ecosystem is another area which doesn’t exist in the automotive space – at least not in a major way. The idea here is there can be only a handful of big ecosystem players and so far we have Apple, Google/Android and Microsoft as our major players… Even RIM has to run Android apps on its OS to even play in the mobile space.

Another area of differentiation for the mobile and automotive spaces is the automobile market can have many more models because of the wide variety of prices in an auto manufacturer’s complete line up of vehicles. Volkswagen for example sells its cheapest car the Jetta starting at $16,675 while its more expensive cousin the Audi R8 GT Spyder starts at $210,300 and its most expensive corporate cousin the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport starts at $2,426,904 or the equivalent of 145.5 Jettas!

But device manufacturers should be cognizant of the parallels between these markets because at the end of the day, consumers are consumers and can be motivated to purchase products for reasons we didn’t foresee ahead of time. Who would have predicted before the iPhone was invented for example, that consumers would prefer a sleek phone made of glass to one which was made out of military grade plastic?

Company after company is learning what most of instinctively know already – competing with Apple head-on is like trying to tackle a freight train with your bare hands as it is barreling down the tracks in your direction. Amazon with its Kindle Fire competed on price and used its services to subsidize the device. Other tablet makers are finding it virtually impossible to compete without such advantages.

So finding out the news that Cisco is discontinuing its Cius tablet isn’t a surprise. I have mentioned before that Cisco is not good at consumer products and although the Cius was targeted at the enterprise, we know IT has become “consumerized” meaning the CIO doesn’t drive tablet decisions. As a result, Cisco has to compete with Apple head-on which as described above is virtually impossible to do.

Cisco’s OJ Winge had this to say about the company’s tablet and software strategy going forward:

Over the last year, Cisco has demonstrated a commitment to delivering innovative software like Cisco Jabber and Cisco WebEx across a wide spectrum of operating systems, tablets and Smart Phones. We’re seeing tremendous interest in these software offerings. Customers see the value in how these offerings enable employees to work on their terms in the Post-PC era, while still having access to collaboration experiences.

Based on these market transitions, Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases.

Moving forward, we intend to double down on software offerings, like Jabber and WebEx, that provide the anytime, anywhere, and any device experiences. We will leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products.

Experience matters, and Cisco is focused on empowering individual collaboration styles more effectively and securely, while providing the broadest choice of collaboration options based on preference, location, and device.

To give you a sense of just how fast the market moves it was 11 months ago where the press was invited to a Cius launch event. After the meeting I posted the video above and an entry titled Cisco Cius and the Need for an Enterprise Tablet. One of my concerns from the post was the following:

The challenges here are how many people want a seven-inch tablet when they can get a ten-inch tablet at a similar price? It is worth noting in my tests with the Cius and the Blackberry Playbook that you get used to the smaller form-factor and obviously there are some portability benefits to a smaller device.

Is Cius a winner? Yes – absolutely but that doesn’t mean it will be successful. Hear me out. The Cius and the Avaya A175 with the Flare interface are building a category called enterprise tablet and to date it isn’t clear if this is a real category or not. By real I mean – substantial in terms of the number of devices sold. In other words, other than some vertical markets like hospitals where IT generally directs such device rollouts, most other industries have seen the BYOD-effect of the consumerization of IT meaning IT doesn’t dictate as much as they used to. Moreover, many workers are purchasing their own tablets and bringing them to work – reducing corporate expense while keeping workers happier.

One final issue is the tablet market right now is pretty much all iPad and Android devices haven’t made much of a dent. Analysts believe this will change but some people of note believe it is possible for Apple to own the tablet space. Moreover, with the close synergy between iTunes and iCloud, Apple makes it that much more desirable to have your tablet come from the same company.

On the way to the event I wrote a post How Cisco Needs to Sell the Cius Tablet which also outlined the risks:

The downside risk is fairly obvious though and that is that software is cheaper than hardware and most anything the Cius can do, an iPad or other Android tablet can as well.

And then there is the consumer electronics angle - Cisco purchased Flip and shut it down a few years later because the company isn't very good at competing in the consumer space where margins are razor-thin. Obviously the growth of smartphones helped kill the pocket-sized video camcorder market as well.

So for Cisco the obvious sales angle is to sell the Cius as an IP-phone which can do so much more. Avaya will obviously be doing the same with its A175 tablet. The challenge in the long-term will be convincing users that they want an Android tablet instead of an iPad. Which means both Avaya and Cisco need to be much better at doing consumer electronics - potentially partnering with a tablet maker like Samsung or HTC to one-up Apple.

I stand by my suggestion that the company should have partnered with a consumer electronics company. Now that Google Owns Motorola Mobility they could be a likely partner as well.

My sense is however that Cisco is so upset about its consumer electronics losses between Flip, Umi and Cius that they won't be open to any such partnerships unless they have little or no risk associated with them.

I reached out to Avaya regarding their strategy and spoke with Joel Hackney, President of Sales and Field Operations. He told me they remain committed on extending video to all employees in the enterprise including mobile video and SIP leadership are very important areas for them. Their pending RADVISION acquisition gives them a full video offering allowing you to enhance your own device or purchase a complete solution.

The question now is will any other company be able to compete with Apple as a pure-play tablet maker. Google should be coming out with their solution soon and we will see what sort of acceptance there is in the market.

If you happen to be a customer of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications or Time Warner Cable, there is some really good news in the form of an official sharing agreement of WiFi spectrum allowing customers of any of these cable companies to gain access to the WiFi networks of any of the companies.

In Norwalk, Connecticut or Cablevision country, you could drive a few dozen miles in one direction and run into a Cox Cable jurisdiction and a few dozen miles in another direction gets you into Time Warner territory. Of course your situation may vary but it is great to know that as you travel around the US you will have access to lots of access points which were once off limits.

In April, 2010 some of these providers stuck a similar deal but to date I have never been able to successfully use WiFi belonging to the other providers - just Optimum WiFi provided by Cablevision.

Perhaps I will have better luck with the new network which has the SSID of CableWiFi. In a perfect world - you log onto this network and use it as you roam this vast country we call the U S of A.

The best news is as 4G providers start to become more restrictive on their bandwidth use, WiFi networks provided by the cablecos will come to the rescue meaning consumers will have to think long and hard before switching from cable to telco-based service home broadband.

Could Verizon and AT&T counter this offer with their own "bundle" of wireless and landline service? Yes, absolutely. It remains to be seen if they care enough about their landline businesses to worry about this new or at least more unified threat.

Hat Tip: PC World

See other related posts written by me:
