TMC editors in San Jose Next Week

July 8, 2010

Next Week, my team and I will be hosting meetings in San Jose where the technology and communications markets will have unprecedented access to TMC editors and the ability to tell their story in TMC's video newsroom. Since I blogged about the opportunity a while back we have already scheduled over 60 meetings. We are subsequently flying more of our team out to the west coast to handle the meetings. The good news is there is still some more space left for meetings now that we have decided to send more resources cross-country from our headquarters in Connecticut.

Moreoever, this event now has networking potential meaning you will not only meet editors but others in the industry.

CNBC Plus gets Much Needed Upgrade

July 6, 2010

I have been a CNBC fan for many years but their paid online service CNBC Plus is pretty lousy because it seems to be an afterthought. Some things it does do well are allow you to stream live CNBC coverage and arrange archived video in any order of your choosing. Years back, the streaming product lost functionality for months and customer service didn't respond with any useful information on the matter after repeated attempts. I covered this problem two years ago and to say the company was very slow to react is an understatement.

Vuvuzelas Equal Profit Online

July 6, 2010

How the World Cup and Entrepreneurial risk-taking turned an idea into profit

The power of the Internet coupled with a good idea allows companies to make money more quickly than ever. Consider the case of the simple vuvuzela - the super-annoying horn constantly blasting at World Cup games. One company, 365 Inc. bet that the focus on the World Cup would make these plastic horns a top seller and was right. The Birmingham Alabama company has sold nearly 30,000 of these horns for $8 a piece and brought in $240,000 in the process.

Invitation Only Video Interviews in San Jose with TMC

June 29, 2010

OK - it is kind of weird to call it "invitation only" if I am blogging about it but somehow it doesn't seem right to not let you know that TMC will be on-hand in Silicon Valley performing a host of video interviews with the best and brightest minds in tech and communications at the San Jose Marriott Tues, JULY 13th - Thurs, JULY 15th.

A sample screen shot of an interview which took place just outside of Washington DC

Here is a link to the most recent interviews I posted from a similar trip to the Washington DC area. If you are interested in consideration be sure to reach out immediately to Jaime Hernaez (jhernaez (at) tmcnet.com).

Since word got out about these interviews the spots have been filling up faster than in any city we have gone to so please be aware we expect all spots to fill up soon.

Here is a sample video from our recent DC trip

Cloud Computing Boosts Data Center Market

June 29, 2010

Thanks to cloud computing, cloud-based storage, cloud-based contact centers, cloud communications and a mix of other services hosted in data centers worldwide, the data center market is booming. A solid article about the market comes courtesy of David Gross at Seeking Alpha.

Coincidentally I will be moderating an Interactive Intelligence sponsored webinar focusing on cloud communications at 2:00pm EST today (don't worry; it is archived if you get to this post later or are busy at this time). I hope to see you online- in the mean time here is an excerpt from the above-mentioned article.

SpaceNet, Angel.com, HyperOffice, Parature and other Video Interviews

June 28, 2010

Last week I was in DC and met with a number of companies in the surrounding area which I wrote about in this entry. In an effort to keep you up to date on more of the interviews I have posted others below and hopefully they are useful to you.

SpaceNet is a managed network services company with roots in the satellite space. The two videos below show the breadth of the company's offerings (Apple users click here: SpaceNet overview, Coms on the move)

Angel.com, a division of Microstrategy talks about their company's cloud-based IVR and contact center solutions for the global 2,000 (Apple link)

HyperOffice boosts small business collaboration and productivity - carriers/channel welcome (Apple link)

Parature is a leader in customer service solutions and enables 20M customers and a Facebook page near you (Apple Link)

Bay Bridge Decision Technologies makes strategic planning software for contact centers with 350+ agents (Apple link)

SkyBitz was formed from a DARPA grant and focuses on low-powered asset tracking and has over 30% market share in the trucking space. Using GLS not GPS, the company adds proprietary technology to solve for location on servers.

Sonos Nearly Perfects Home Audio

June 27, 2010

This summer more Americans than ever are conserving cash by taking staycations and in doing so, many are looking to add nice touches to their homes to make their lives more comfortable. A new 3D TV may be one way to go about improving the house but another is boosting the capability and functionality of your sound system.

For many months I have been enjoying the Sonos multi-room music system which uses WiFi to stream many different types of audio throughout your home. What made me decide to go with Sonos myself was their introduction last winter of an all-in-one "boom box" style stereo which looks like something Apple or Bose would make.

US World Cup Win, Earthquake, BP, Twitter and More

June 24, 2010

Yesterday was certainly made for Twitter as news flowed in so fast it was difficult to cover the major events with any more depth than 140 characters. First there was the report that the US had an exchange of generals in the Afghanistan war while at around the same time the BP oil spill took a turn for the worse when a robot accidentally knocked into some equipment causing the spill volume to increase.

All this while in World Cup news, the US prevailed in a historic win in the final moments of a game against Algeria - even though it seemed referee calls in back-to-back games were decidedly anti-American (US Vs. Algeria, US vs. Slovenia) resulting in two important goals being called invalid.

DashPad App Store Alternative to Get Weather Widget

June 16, 2010

Recently I wrote about the DashPad environment from PXL Creations which allows iPad users to utilize Safari instead of the App Store to install widgets which multitask and allow you access to a bunch of tools like a calculator, notepad, calendar, searching in Google, the Yellow Pages and more. One request I made in a post on the matter was I hope that a weather widget would come soon. It seems the company will oblige me as I heard word late last night from company president Charles Carver that the weather widget is next to be released - along with performance improvements.

If you are a widget lover and have an iPad, $10 will get you access to a wonderful alternative to the Apple App Store.
