I also want to extend appreciation to the speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees at the show. In addition, thanks to our many partners who contributed greatly to the success of this week of events.

Breaking: Goldman Sachs Bonuses all Stock?

January 25, 2010

I just heard from a reliable source that Goldman Sachs bonuses have been switched from cash to stock. Recently the company announced this would be the case for those at the top of the organization but now my source tells me this will be the case for the whole company.

With the massive government and public backlash against banks and the amount of their compensation, this seems like a very very smart move for Goldman.

I realize this is beyond the scope of my typical coverage - I thought it worth sharing. I have tried to verify the story online and so far nothing.

Update Jan 27, 2010: David Faber from CNBC reports the bonuses will be 60% in stock and 40% in cash. The stock vests in 3-years -- thanks to CNBC for clarifying.

Startup Camp Telephony Launches at ITEXPO East 2010

January 21, 2010

What began as an idea just a few months back became a very well-attended conference which brought together startups and the financial community. The energy and excitement of this new event -- Startup Camp Telephony -- was incredible and I am writing this at 7:15 at night on a day when breakfast started at 7:30 AM.

It has been a long day and yet I sense from those around me that they could talk about all the new telecom opportunities available to them -- all night.

Videos below capture the beginning of Larry Lisser's talk - he kicked off the show and is a TMC partner in this conference. The next video is of Jamie Siminoff -- the keynote speaker who wowed us all.

Skype Takes Share, Upgrades iPhone App

January 19, 2010

Skype is now the largest provider of cross border communications in the world, by far according to a new report from TeleGeography. According to the research company, the rate of international calling has been growing at a steady compounded rate of 15% but in the last few years the slope has decreased as a result of the recession and of course, people switching to Skype.

In other Skype news, the company recently upgraded their iPhone app with some minor tweaks which sadly don't include push notification.

Smart Buildings remind me of the CTI/VoIP Opportunity

January 15, 2010

For telecom veterans who were active in the communications space in the nineties you remember the excitement the industry enjoyed when Microsoft and Novell entered the telecom markets with TAPI and TSAPI protocols to interconnect communications systems with computers. The CTI or computer telephony integration space was born when the OS companies realized that by enabling telecom systems to be more tightly integrated with computing, they could in effect start to generate revenue by having new telecom systems built on their open platforms. Prior to this time, any sort of integration cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but CTI solutions based on desktop computers could be built for $10,000 to $15,000.

I couldn't help but think about this market as I read an article on connected buildings from Erin Harrison which resides on the Smart Data Center community.
