iPad's Lack of Flash and Openness a Blow to Publishers

January 28, 2010

Last year I called lack of Flash support on the iPhone the real Apple Tax. This is still the case and since this post, TMC had to spend significant development resources to create an iPhone specific site which converts our video from Flash to H.264.

The iPad will not have Flash support either - or multitasking for that matter. Today, Silicon Valley Insider explains that this new Apple tablet touted as a publishing savior will actually hurt media companies because their ads which are currently written in Flash need to be rewritten via the iPad SDK.

iPod, iPhone, iPad - Will it Be a Hit Too?

January 27, 2010

Steve Jobs just unveiled a new Apple iPad tablet - the iPad - with a 9.7 inch screen and weight of 1.5 pounds. Virtually all the rumors were right - I blogged about the potential screen sizes just this week in fact. The half-inch thick device is powered by an Apple processor - the 1 GHz A4 and can last ten hours on a single charge.

I am as excited as any tech enthusiast would be about a new Apple gadget which hopes to create massive success in a nascent category - tablet computers.

Is Wow Mobile Doomed Already?

January 26, 2010

Peter Radizeski of RAD-INFO thinks Wow Mobile is doomed. To be fair, Peter is cynical but then again, he is right most of the time. In this case he thinks a MLM, get-rich scheme which sells mobile service has no chance -- especially when you consider the history of MVNO failure in the US. He has some great points...

Tools I Used at ITEXPO East 2010

January 26, 2010

I used a slew of technology at the show but two products are worth special mention. The first is the Flip Mino HD video recorder which excelled in low-light conditions and allowed me to take rapid and high-quality videos of the show. Thanks Cisco for providing me with this device.

In addition, I must say that without Verizon EVDO I would have been lost at this event and although thousands of people converged on the conference, the service allowed rapid uploads of multi-megabyte video files.

It is worth mentioning that many people commented that an iPhone was an obligatory accessory at the expo. In addition, I noticed many people standing near electrical outlets with thin white power cords which seemed way too short for adults.

So perhaps Verizon Wireless didn't see their network taxed too greatly by attendees.

Yes, there was wireless broadband but the WiFi literally choked during peak times.

ITEXPO East 2010 Miami a Great Success Thanks to You

January 26, 2010

A humble thank you to my followers who came out in support of ITEXPO this past week in Miami. Thank you conferees who braved a tough economic climate and came to the show. I also want to extend appreciation to the speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees at the show. In addition, thanks to our many partners who contributed greatly to the success of this week of events.

Breaking: Goldman Sachs Bonuses all Stock?

January 25, 2010

I just heard from a reliable source that Goldman Sachs bonuses have been switched from cash to stock. Recently the company announced this would be the case for those at the top of the organization but now my source tells me this will be the case for the whole company.

With the massive government and public backlash against banks and the amount of their compensation, this seems like a very very smart move for Goldman.

I realize this is beyond the scope of my typical coverage - I thought it worth sharing. I have tried to verify the story online and so far nothing.

Update Jan 27, 2010: David Faber from CNBC reports the bonuses will be 60% in stock and 40% in cash. The stock vests in 3-years -- thanks to CNBC for clarifying.

Startup Camp Telephony Launches at ITEXPO East 2010

January 21, 2010

What began as an idea just a few months back became a very well-attended conference which brought together startups and the financial community. The energy and excitement of this new event -- Startup Camp Telephony -- was incredible and I am writing this at 7:15 at night on a day when breakfast started at 7:30 AM.

It has been a long day and yet I sense from those around me that they could talk about all the new telecom opportunities available to them -- all night.

Videos below capture the beginning of Larry Lisser's talk - he kicked off the show and is a TMC partner in this conference. The next video is of Jamie Siminoff -- the keynote speaker who wowed us all.
